Christopher Columbus

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1 Christopher Columbus was born in 1541 in the republic of Genoa, Italy, the son of a weaver. He first went to sea as a teenager, participating in several voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Several years later, as an explorer and navigator, Columbus also traveled to Africa, England, and Iceland.

2 During Columbus' lifetime, Muslim forces controlled many of the trade routes throughout the Middle East, and this made travel to India and China extremely difficult and dangerous. Believing that a route west across the Atlantic Ocean would be quicker and safer, Columbus made it his mission to get funding for such a voyage.

3 Columbus encountered a great deal of opposition to his bold plan. He first proposed his idea to the king of Portugal, who rejected it. Columbus met with a similar reaction when he suggested a westward voyage to the leaders of Venice and Genoa. When he took his proposal to Spain, the Catholic rulers were more concerned with reclaiming their territory from Muslim control than visiting far-away lands. It wasn't until a Portuguese explorer made a successful voyage around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, thus opening a new trade route to India, that Spanish rulers decided to compete with Portuguese exploration by sponsoring Columbus.

4 In August 1492, Columbus left Spain with three ships - the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. After 36 days of sailing, Columbus and his crew were finally able to set foot in what is the present-day Bahamas. There, he came into contact with a timid but open group of natives who were willing to trade with the Europeans. Shortly thereafter, Columbus visited the island of Cuba, as well as Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Although these places were in the Americas, Columbus believed that he had landed in Asia.

5 Over the next 15 years, Columbus traveled between the Americas and Spain several times. His legacy, however, is a mixed one. Although he opened up the Americas to a lasting European settlement and brought new crops to Europe, he is also blamed for the destruction of the native peoples of the islands he explored. Columbus had a policy of forced labor in his camps, and his ships also brought disease to places that had no natural immunity.

The Discovery of Penicillin

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. Antibiotics are a type of drug used in the treatment of bacterial infections. They may either kill bacteria or prevent its reproduction. They are not effective against viruses such as the common cold or influenza. Antibiotics completely revolutionized medicine in the 20th century - leading to the virtual eradication of many diseases, especially in the developed world.

2. Penicillin, the world's first antibiotic, was discovered in London in 1928 by Dr. Alexander Fleming, a bacteriologist at the Hospital of St. Mary's. His discovery began after he returned to his messy laboratory from a holiday in Scotland. Before the vacation, he had prepared some petri dishes of a bacteria known as

"staphylococcus aureus." After coming back to England and examining the petri dishes, he noticed that they were contaminated with a mold called "penicillium notatum." He examined the dishes under a microscope and found that the mold amazingly prevented the growth of the staphylococci bacteria. Fleming spent the next several weeks trying to grow more of the mold to confirm his findings. Finally, he was able to conclude that his initial observation was correct, and that something in the mold might be able to combat disease. 3. Later, Fleming wrote in his journal about his reaction to this incredible discovery: “When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I guess that was exactly what I did.”

4. Perhaps surprisingly, after his discovery in 1928, Fleming did very did little work on penicillin. He did not have the laboratory resources, nor did he have the background in chemistry to successfully go about isolating the active bacteria-killing agent in the mold that he had found. This task began in 1938 when a professor of pathology at Oxford University in England, Dr. Howard Florey, came across Fleming's research paper. At first, Florey and his team of scientists had trouble producing enough pure penicillin to treat people with infections. It took 2000 liters of mold culture to produce enough pure penicillin to treat a single person. Eventually, with the help of American scientists, techniques were developed for mass producing penicillin using x-rays and alternate sources of mold.

5. In World War II, penicillin proved to be of great value. The great killer in the First World War was bacterial infection rather than artillery. In World War I, for example, the death rate from bacterial pneumonia was 18%. In World War II, that number had dropped to 1%.
