(while an evil t orment encompassed Fir` awn's people.) t his refers t o drowning in t he sea, t hen being t ransferred from t here t o Hell, for t heir souls are exposed t o t he Fire morning and evening unt il t he Hour begins. When t he Day of Resurrect ion comes, t heir souls and bodies will be reunit ed in Hell. Allah says:

This Ayah cont ains one of t he maj or proofs used by t he Ahlus-Sunnah t o prove t hat t here will be t orment in t he grave during t he period of Al-Barzakh; it is t he phrase:

(The Fire, t hey are exposed t o it , morning and aft ernoon). But t he quest ion arises: t his Ayah was undoubt edly revealed in Makkah, but t hey use it as evidence t o prove t hat t here will be

t orment in t he grave during t he period of Al-Barzakh. Imam Ahmad recorded from ` A'ishah, may Allah be pleased wit h her, t hat a Jewish woman used t o serve her, and whenever ` A'ishah did her a favor, t he Jewish woman would say, "May Allah save you from t he t orment of t he grave. '' ` A'ishah said, "Then t he Messenger of Allah came in, and I said, ` O Messenger of Allah, will t here be any t orment in t he grave before t he Day of Resurrect ion' He said,

(The Jews are lying, and t hey t ell more lies about Allah. There is no t orment except on t he Day of Resurrect ion.) Then as much t ime passed as Allah willed should pass, t hen one day he came out at midday, wrapped in his robe wit h his eyes reddening, calling at t he t op of his voice:

(The grave is like pat ches of dark night ! O people, if you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh lit t le. O people, seek refuge wit h Allah from t he t orment of t he grave, for t he t orment of t he grave is real.)'' This chain of narrat ion is Sahih according t o t he condit ions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim, alt hough t hey did not record it . It was said, ` how can t his report be reconciled wit h t he fact t hat t he Ayah was revealed in Makkah and t he Ayah indicat es t hat t here will be t orment during t he period of Al-Barzakh' The answer is t hat t he Ayah refers t o t he souls (of Fir` awn and his people) being exposed t o t he Fire morning and evening; it does not say t hat t he pain will affect t heir bodies in t he grave. So it may be t hat t his has t o do specifically wit h t heir souls. Wit h regard t o t here being any effect on t heir bodies in Al-Barzakh, and t heir feeling pain as a result , t his is indicat ed in t he Sunnah, in some Hadit hs which we will ment ion below. It was said t hat t his Ayah refers t o t he punishment of t he disbelievers in Al-Barzakh, and t hat it does not by it self imply t hat t he believer will be punished in t he grave for his sins. This is indicat ed by t he Hadit h recorded by Imam Ahmad from ` A'ishah, may Allah be pleased wit h her, according t o which t he Messenger of Allah ent ered upon ` A'ishah when a Jewish woman was wit h her, and she (t he Jewish woman) was saying, "I was t old t hat you will be t ried in t he grave.'' The Messenger of Allah was worried and said:

(Only t he Jews will be t est ed.) ` A'ishah, may Allah be pleased wit h her, said, "Several night s passed, t hen t he Messenger of Allah said:

(Verily you will be t est ed in t he graves.)'' ` A'ishah, may Allah be pleased wit h her, said, "Aft er t hat , t he Messenger of Allah used t o seek refuge wit h Allah from t he t orment of t he grave.'' This was also recorded by Muslim. It could be said t hat t his Ayah indicat es t hat t he souls will be punished in Al-Barzakh, but t his does not necessarily imply t hat t he bodies in t heir graves will be affect ed by t hat . When Allah revealed somet hing about t he t orment of t he grave t o His Prophet , he sought refuge wit h Allah from t hat . And Allah knows best . The Hadit hs which speak of t he t orment of t he grave are very many. Qat adah said, concerning t he Ayah,

(morning and aft ernoon.): "(This means) every morning and every evening, for as long as t his world remains, it will be said t o t hem by way of rebuke and humiliat ion, O people of Fir` awn, t his is your posit ion.'' Ibn Zayd said, "They are t here t oday, being exposed t o it morning and evening, unt il t he Hour begins.
