It seems that Mayor Iwamoto was smiling. This photo from Kokubunji Street at that time brings back happy memories for me.

At the State Capital, the step marks one mile above sea level. The men on the left and right are indicating the one-mile mark with their fingers. This is why Denver is known as the Mile High City.

・私が大学生の時、高山とデンバーが姉妹都市であることをきっかけにデンバー留学した際の写真。
・あれから１７年、今でもデンバーの家族とはクリスマスカードやメールなどをやりとりし交流を深めて います。
・あの当時、子供だった３人の娘達がもう立派な大人の女性になっているのが驚きです。

「My Denver Host Family」
When I was a university student, I was able to go to Denver on an exchange program because of our sister city affiliation, and these pictures are from that time. This was 17 years ago, and I still maintain the relationship with my host family through Christmas cards and mail. The three daughters of the house have grown to become outstanding adults, I was surprised and glad to hear.

あれから２０年以上経ちますが、後悔の念ととも に忘れることのできない思い出がデンバーにありま す。まだ２０代で教員としても駆け出しの頃でした。
第４次高校生デンバー訪問団の引率として水口武彦 先生と共に１１名の生徒を引率し、デンバーを訪問。
市内観光や当時のフェデリコ・ペーニア市長訪問、
スキーリゾート地として有名なアスペンを訪れ、現 地の人たちとの交流。すべてが貴重な体験であり、
思い出の１ページとして残っています。でもホーム スティをした時のことがずっと脳裏から離れずにい ます。
デンバーでは、ターガット夫妻が、ホストファミ リーとして私と水口先生を受け入れてくださいまし た。ターガット夫妻は、子育てもとうに終え、仕事 も一線を引退し、夫婦２人で静かに暮らしている落 ち着いた雰囲気のある夫妻であり、ホストマザーで ある奥さんが日系の方なので日本語も話すことがで きて、当時英語がまだ不十分だった私にとってあり がたい環境でした。ターガット夫妻の自宅は、小さ な平屋建てで、部屋がわずかに２つ。その一部屋に 私と水口先生が。少し大きめのベッドが１つあり、
そこで２人がゴロ寝することになりました。１つの ベッドに… 年配で恩師でもある水口先生と２人で は抵抗があり、結局私がソファーで寝ることに。小 さな部屋は床にスーツケースを広げたら歩くスペー スもないくらい。それでも整理整頓が行き届き、快 適な空間でした。食事もシンプルでしたが、一生懸 命にこしらえた愛情たっぷりの料理でした。
日本でもアメリカでもホストファミリーの役割 は、一般的に観光名所を訪れたり、食事に出かけた り、パーティを開いたり、と共通していますが、ター ガット夫妻の家には車もなく、ダウンタウンやレッ ドロック、牧場にはバスで出かけました。そこで夕 食をとり、フォークソングを聞きながら一緒に時間
Itʼs over 20 years since I visited Denver and it is a bittersweet memory which I will never forget.
I was still a young teacher in my 20ʼs when Mr.
Minakuchi led our group of 11 high school students to Denver. We were able to see the city, visit the mayor Frederico Pena, visit the famous ski-town of Aspen, and communicate with local people. I could fill an entire page with the precious memories from that experience, but the most memorable part was my time with my host family.
In Denver, Mr. and Mrs. Target took myself and Mr. Minakuchi in as our host family. At that time, their children were already raised, and they were enjoying a relaxing retirement. In addition, my host mother was a Japanese-American, and could speak Japanese, so my fears about speaking English were put to rest. They lived in a small one-story house, with only two rooms. They gave us one of the rooms, with a fairly large bed that we were to share. However, Mr. Minakuchi was my former teacher, so I felt bad sharing the bed with him. Therefore, I decided to sleep on the couch by myself. The room was so small that we hardly had enough space to walk if a suitcase was open, but the room was neat and tidy and we felt comfortable there. The meals were simple, but I knew that our host mother put a lot of effort into the cooking so we were happy.
Usually, in both Japan and the U.S., host families taking in foreigners will take them to tourist attractions, go to restaurants, have parties, and other things. But the Targets didnʼt have a car, and instead accompanied us by bus to downtown, Red Rocks, and a ranch. There, we had dinner, and listened to folk songs together. I forgot my busy
