2005 International Symposium

at the Tsukuba University of Technology Shuichi Katai

Chairman of the International Committee

The International Symposiums of Tsukuba College of Technology have been held from this Millennium as a project of the TCT International Committee. This symposium fosters international exchange projects between many countries. It is with a global perspective on education and research that we extended invitations to sister universities as well as institutions of the higher education for people with visual and hearing impairment. Lectures focused on cutting edge research topics and information as well as various points of view on the issues of visual and hearing impairment face during their education.

Whereas the 2000-2003 Symposiums included exclusively sister universities from Europe and America, since 2004 Asian Universities for the visually and hearing impaired have become the central participants: the Special Education college of Tenging University, the Special Education College of Peking Union University, and the Special Education of Chou Jun University were invited from the Republic of China. A symposium was held presenting different aspects of Chinese education for the visually and hearing impaired. Until this year the symposium was held at the Tsukuba University of Technology Auditorium, but in celebration of Tsukuba College of Technology becoming a 4 year undergraduate University the symposium was held for the first time at a Hotel. There were over 200 participants.

Speakers included the President of the Korean National College of Rehabilitation

& Welfare, Mr. Suk-Min Chang, the President of the Ratchasuda College, Mahidol University, Ms. Jitprapa Sri-on, the Executive Vice President of the De La Salle- College of saint Benilde, and Professor of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rotestar Institute of Technology, Mr. James J DeCaro.

Based on this year's symposium, symposists made significant contributions. Each country provided not only information about the higher education for blind and deaf people but also offered rich suggestions and opinions for the future of this area of academia.

Also, there was an event that deserves special mention. Until now, sign language interpretation, simultaneous closed caption presentations and English-Japanese interpretation had been provided. For the first time we asked an English-Japanese interpreter with visual impairment to assist at our symposium. From now on we anticipate expanding the opportunities for visually impaired interpreters and translators.
