While using the cameras on our smartphones,

we should also look at the things that are in front of us.

Why do young people take so many pictures? Young people, especially high school students, take a lot of pictures and then spend time looking at them afterwards. They also spend time choosing and sharing pictures. This can be a waste of time because

most high school students are very busy after school. They only have about three hours of free time every day. They have a lot of things to do at home. Some students need to study, do

homework and help their parents. Others may want to read, watch TV or talk with their friends. If students spend an hour every day looking at pictures and uploading them to the Internet, that will be about

Our time is limited and precious. If you want to be happy and healthy, you should spend time doing interesting activities. How about putting down your smartphones? You can go to new places, meet new people, and try new things. Through

について書かれた文です。読んで,

問いに答えなさい。

Clarissa “Clara” Barton is the founder of the American Red Cross. She was born into a good family in Massachusetts. Barton first worked as a school teacher for twelve years and then she moved to Washington, D.C.

There, she worked as a clerk in the United States Patent Office. She was the first woman in the United States to have this job.

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Barton visited army hospitals to help the soldiers. She brought them food, clothes and medicine.

She was surprised when she realized that some of the soldiers were her students from many years before. At the time, no women were allowed to work in army hospitals. However, she kept going there to help many

wounded soldiers. She talked to them, read books to them and wrote letters to their families.

After the Civil War ended, Barton visited Europe. A year after she arrived in Europe, she worked with volunteers from the International Red Cross. Those volunteers were helping soldiers during the war between France and Prussia. The International Red Cross was known as an

organization that helped soldiers during wartime. However, Barton decided to bring the Red Cross to the United States as a peacetime organization.

In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross. Volunteers in America helped people during natural disasters, such as floods, famines, disease epidemics and earthquakes.

Barton’s efforts inspired people in other countries to do volunteer work during peacetime. The Geneva Convention’s rules were changed in 1884.

After that, peacetime aid became an official purpose of the International Red Cross.

In addition to leading the American Red Cross, Barton had many interests. She traveled and gave speeches on education, women’s suffrage and civil rights. She was a very good speaker. People cried when they listened to her stories. She also wrote three books about her life and her work with the American Red Cross.

Barton passed away at her home in Maryland, on April 12, 1912.

Today, she is one of the most important persons in the history of social work and nursing. The American Red Cross is now a large, global organization, with more than 20,000 nurses and volunteers who do important work in their communities.
