地 下 の 国 の ア リス 』 の原 典

『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 『鏡 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 と い う と 、 英 国 の 有 名 な 作 家 で あ り数 学 者 で も あ る ル イ ス ・キ ャ ロ ル(1832∼1898)の 代 表 作 品 で あ る 。 そ し て そ の 『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 と い う作 品 が 出 来 上 が る ま で の ス トー リ ー も 、 作 品 と 同 じ位 有 名 で あ ろ う。 1862年7月4日 金 曜 の 午 後 、 キ ャ ロ ル が オ ッ ク ス フ ォ ー ド大 学 の ク ラ イ ス ト ・チ ャ ー チ 学 寮 長 の 三 人 の 娘(ロ リ ー ナ 、 ア リ ス 、 イ ー デ ィ ス) と船 遊 び を した 際 、 即 興 で お 話 し を 作 り 三 姉 妹 を 楽 し ませ た 。 キ ャ ロ ル は 三 姉 妹 の 中 で も、 特 に 次 女 の ア リ ス(1852∼1934)が お 気 に 入 りだ っ た の で 、 そ の お 話 し に ア リス を 登 場 さ せ た 。 ア リス は そ の お 話 し が 大 変 気 に 入 り、 キ ャ ロ ル に 「自 分 の た め に 、 こ の 話 し を 紙 に 書 い て 下 さ い 。」 と 頼 ん だ 。 そ し て キ ャ ロ ル は 何 度 も書 き 直 しな が ら、 挿 絵 も 自分 で 書 き添 え ア リ ス の た め に 一 冊 の す ば ら し い 本 を 作 り上 げ た 。 船 遊 び か ら2年 後 の1864年 、 タ イ トル は 『地 下 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 と な っ て ア リ ス に 贈 ら れ た 。 こ れ が 後 に 何 度 も 手 を 加 え ら れ1866年 版 の 『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リス 』 と し て 出 版 さ れ た 。 ま た 『地 下 の 国 の ア リス 』 も1886年 フ ァ ク シ ミ リ版 で 出 版 さ れ た 。 ア リス は キ ャ ロ ル か ら贈 ら れ た こ れ ら の 本 を 、 結 婚 後 も大 切 に 保 管 し て い た 。 し か し 、 夫 の 死 後 、 屋 敷 を 維 持 す る 費 用 の た め に 手 放 す こ と に な っ た 。 そ れ が1928年 、 ロ ン ド ン の ニ ュ ー ボ ン ド ・ス ト リー トの サ ザ ビ ー で 行 わ れ た オ ー ク シ ョ ン で あ る 。 こ の オ ー ク シ ョ ン で は キ ャ ロ ル 手 書 き の も の と共 に フ ァ ク シ ミ リ版 の 『地 下 の 国 の ア リス 』 及 び 、1865年 の『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リス 』が 競 売 に か け られ た。 そ う して ア リス の 手 を離 れ た貴 重 な 本 は、 書 籍 デ ィー ラー や 収 集 家 の 手 を経 て 現 在 大 英 博 物 館 に保 管 さ れ て い る。
1.第1回 オ ー ク シ ョ ン
Sotheby's stage - managed the whole affair with impeccable style. It was one of the truly great book sales, the kind of occasion that few people are ever privileged to witness. There were Carroll items from other sources:an 1865 copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and a facsimile edition of Alice's Adventures Underground, both autographed by the author.
The auction was held in a great gallery at Sotheby's auction rooms in New Bond Street. Old Master paintings looked down from the walls, which were of oak, like the auctioneer's ros-trum. Before the rostrum was the horseshoe - shaped table cov-ered with green baize where the dealers always sat; and in fromt of that, rows of chairs to seat three hundred spectators, some there to bid, but most just for the excitement of it all: for word had got around that Alice was to be there in person, and many were in their seats a full three hours before the auc-tion was due to start.
As the auction began, attention was focused on an Amer-ican, Dr.A.S.W. Rosenbach, a distinguished book dealer seated on the right of the table, nearest to the auctioneer. Opposite him was E. H . Dring, President of Quaritch's, the well - known London dealer, who was bidding for the British Museum. Neaby sat Mr.Maggs, another London dealer, whose client

remained anonymous. Alice was seated on the rostrum, a frail figure, retiring, yet stylishly dressed in a tall, wide - brimmed hat with a contrasting hatband and a coat with a fashionable astrakhan collar. Next to her was Sir Frederick Kenyon, Librarian of the British Museum.
Promptly at one o'clock the auctioneer, Mr .Des Graz, began Many items came on before Alice's, including the manu-script of Hardy's 'An Ancient Earthwork', which fetched £600. Maggs and Rosenbach fought fiercely over the 1865 copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , but the former dropped out when Rosenbach bid £5000. Finally it was time for item 319, and a rustle of excitement went round the assembled people.
The bidding started at £5000, and bidding rose at £100 per second. Alice looked thrilled and fascinated. The excitement was so intense that few people present could actually hear the bidding. At £12,500 Quaritch, on behalf of the British Museum, had reached his limit. At this stage Dr .Rosenbach — smooth shaven, thickset, dark -haired and wearing a pincenez — and Mr.Maggs were the only people still bidding. When Rosen-bach bid £15,400 Maggs dropped out. Rosenbach had won, and the manuscript was now his. Alice, visibly affected by events and by past memories of days in Wonderland, was escor-ted from the room by friends to the car which awaiescor-ted her. 'I am very pleased at the price,' she said before she drove away.
`It is a large sum of money and I do not yet know what I shall do with it.(1)
会 場 の 様 子 は 、 グ リー ン の テ ー ブ ル 掛 け が 掛 け ら れ た 馬 蹄 形 の し た テ ー ブ ル が あ り、そ の 前 に は300人 分 の 椅 子 が 並 ん で い た 。 そ の 椅 子 も オ ー ク シ ョ ン 開 始 の3時 間 も 前 か ら 埋 り始 め る ほ ど の 盛 況 ぶ りだ っ た 。 1時 丁 度 に 始 ま っ た オ ー ク シ ョ ン は 『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リス 』 の1865年 版 コ ピ ー の 時 に 、 ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク とマ ッ グ ズ と で 激 し い 競 り合 い に な っ た 。 結 果 は ロ ー ゼ ンバ ッ ク が ￡5000で 手 に 入 れ た 。 そ し て 遂 に 『地 下 の 国 の ア リス 』 の 手 稿 本 の 番 が 来 た 時 に は 、 会 場 の 興 奮 は 最 高 潮 に 達 し た 。競 り は ￡5000か ら始 ま り、毎 秒 ￡100で 競 り上 が っ て い っ た 。 そ の 様 子 か ら 、 正 に そ の 時 の 激 し い 競 り合 い の 状 況 が う か が え る 。 競 り合 っ た の は 、 ア メ リカ 人 の 有 名 な 書 籍 デ ィ ー ラ ー で あ る ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク と大 英 博 物 館 か ら の 代 理 人 で あ る ク ォ リ ッ チ、 ロ ン ド ン の 書 籍 デ ィ ー ラ ー で あ る マ ッ グ ズ で あ っ た 。 ￡12,500の 時 に ク ォ リ ッ チ が 下 りた 。 そ して ￡15,400の 時 に マ ッ グ ズ が 下 り、 手 稿 本 は ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク の も の と な っ た 。 こ の オ ー ク シ ョ ン を 壇 上 か ら見 守 っ て い た ア リス も、 こ の 金 額 に は 大 変 満 足 し た 。 しか しロ ー ゼ ンバ ック は 、 ￡15,400と い う この 当 時 の英 国 内 で は1冊 の 本 に支 払 わ れ た 最 高 額 で 手 に入 れ た 後 に、 この 本 はや は り英 国民 の も の で あ るべ き と感 じ、 大 英 博 物 館 の付 属 図 書 館 に買 値 で 売 却 す る こ と を 申 し出 た。 な お か つ 自身 か らの 寄 付 金 と して ￡1000を 支 払 う こ と を提 案 した が 、 受 け 入 れ られ な か っ た。 2.第2回 オ ー ク シ ョ ン
It was a cloudy Wednesday morning. I was working at my

The auction was the talk of booksellers here and in England. Everyone knew Dr.Rosenbach would buy it but would he have to pay the $100,000 he told everyone he thought it was worth ? The question was how much would he have to pay for it and who would be bidding against him ?
The gossip among booksellers was that he would pay about $40,000 to $50,000 for it and that Dave Randall head of the Rare book department of Scribners would be bidding against Dr.Rosenbach on behalf of J.K.Lilly who was building a large collection of rare books which he would house in a library he was building a large in Indianapolis, Indiana.
No one knew how much Mr. Randall had been authorized to bid on the manuscript but everyone knew he would probably be the underbidder. There would not be many dealers bidding on the manuscript.
I went off, alone, walking quickly from 46th street and Fifth Avenue to 57th street and Madison Avenue. When I arrived at Parke Bernet I saw that the downstairs room was filled with dealers and onlookers. (Mainly famous collectors who had come to watch rather than to buy.) So I went upstairs and found a seat in the front row on the left side of the bal-cony, near the wall where I could look down and see everyone.
The Letters of Lewis Carroll which made up the first 10 items of the Carroll section of the Johnson collection brought fair prices but certain not the thousands they bring today.
I held my breath as Louis Marion auctioned off more Car-roll material. Then came item 51. The manuscript.
There was slight pause as the Auctioneer reached for a glass of water. Then in a firm voice he intoned: "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . The original manuscript with 14 full page plates and 23 text illustrations by the author ."
"We open with $20
,000. Do I hear $21,000 ?" "$21
,000" said Dave Randall, bidding for Mr. Lilly. 122,000" said another bidder (whose name I cannot
ber).
"$23
,000" said Mr. Randall.
And so it went until it reached $40,000. Then Dr.Rosen-bach entered the bidding.
I was standing up, breathlessly watching the bidding , when a fly buzzed in front of my eyes. Of course I waved my hand back and forth to get it out of my way. And an employee in uniform came up me and asked my name. "Oh ! I am not bid-ding, my dad told me not to bid, much as I would like to." I said in a panic. "Then please don't wave your hands about." said the attendant.
They did not have fans with numbers on it to wave in the air, as they do now. So people raised their hands or some-times called out their bids. Of course several; dealers had a code for bidding by raising their glasses to the to of thier heads or touching their noses or pulling at an ear. Dr.Rosenbach sim-ply raised the hand holding the catalogue and waved it slightly.
At $50,000 the Doctor stopped and so did the other two bid-ders. Dave Randall was NOT the underbidder, as so many stories have reported.

Applause broke out in the auditorium and then many people
left including Dave Randall. The bidding continued on Lewis
Carroll material. A dealer bought an inscribed 1865 Alice after Dr.Rosenbach dropped out of bidding.
Reporters were crowding around Dr.Rosenbah and then
run-ning for the phones. Other friends were also crowding around
Dr.Rosenbach. As my dad and I were walking toward Dr
Rosenbach a reporter came flying by and asked "What do the
initials A.S.W. stand for ?" "Abraham, Sinmon Wolfe" I
an-swered as I followed my dad to the crowd around
Dr.Rosen-bach. After all, this was the SECOND time he had bought the
manuscript.
We approached Dr.Rosenbach and my dad, instead of
con-gratulating him said, "Abe, haven't you finished reading that manuscript yet ?" No one called Dr.Rosenbach anything but
Dr.Rosenbach or Dr.R. "Excuse me, Ben." he said rather
huf-fily. Rosenbach had no sense of humor. "I have to ask
Mar-ion who was bidding against me." Rosenbach always had to
know who was bidding against him.(2)
こ の 第2回 目 の オ ー ク シ ョ ン は1946年 ア メ リカ ・ニ ュ ー ヨ ー ク の パ ー ク ・バ ー ネ ッ トで 行 わ れ た も の で あ る 。1928年 ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク の 手 に 入 っ た 『地 下 の 国 の ア リス 』 の 原 稿 が 一 時 他 の 収 集 家 の 手 に 渡 り、 再 び こ の オ ー ク シ ョ ン で 競 り に か け ら れ た 。 そ し て そ れ を 又 手 に 入 れ た の も 同 じ く ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク だ っ た 。 こ の オ ー ク シ ョ ン に ア メ リカ の 書 籍 デ ィ ー ラ ー 、 ベ ン ・エ イ ブ ラ ム ソ ン(BenAbramson1898∼1995)と 娘 の デ ボ ラ ・ベ ン ソ ン(Deborah 一119一
Benson1926∼)が 参 加 し て い た 。 デ ボ ラ ・ベ ン ソ ン は 現 在 も コ ネ テ ィ カ ッ ト州 で 書 籍 デ ィー ラ ー と し て 活 躍 し て い る 。 上 記 は デ ボ ラ ・ベ ン ソ ン が20才 の 時 に 見 た オ ー ク シ ョ ン の 模 様 を 記 述 し た も の の 一 部 で あ る 。 こ の オ ー ク シ ョ ンの 中 で 話 題 に 上 っ て い る の は 、 や は り ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク の こ と で あ る 。 デ ィ ー ラ ー 達 の 間 で は 彼 が 競 り落 とす と 、 嚀 さ れ て い た 。 今 回 彼 と競 り合 っ た の は 、 イ ン シ ュ リ ン の 製 造 で 有 名 な 薬 品 会 社 で あ るLillycompanyの 代 理 と し て 参 加 し た デ イ ヴ ・ラ ン ドル(DaveRan-dal1)で あ っ た 。 ベ ン ソ ン が 会 場 に 着 い た 時 に は 、 既 に1階 は デ ィ ー ラ ー や 見 物 人 で 一 杯 だ っ た の で2階 の 席 に つ い た 。 品 目51番 が 『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 だ っ た 。 競 売 人 が 水 の 入 っ た グ ラ ス に 手 を 延 ば し た 時 、少 し の 間 が 空 い た 。 そ れ か ら 力 強 い 声 で 言 っ た 。 「『不 思 議 の 国 の ア リ ス 』 作 者 に よ る 14の ペ ー ジ 大 挿 絵 と23の テ ク ス トイ ラ ス ト レ ー シ ョ ン の オ リ ジ ナ ル 原 稿 」 「で は$20,000か ら 始 め ま す 。」 と始 ま り、$40,000に な っ た 時 ロ ー ゼ ンバ ッ ク が 競 り に 加 わ っ た 。そ し て$50,000で 競 りは 終 わ り 原 稿 は 彼 の も の と な っ た 。 こ の 競 売 の 最 中 に 、 ベ ン ソ ン は 自 分 の 廻 り を 飛 ん で い る 蝿 を 追 い 払 お う と し て 手 を 振 っ て い た 。 そ れ を 競 売 に 加 わ っ て い る と 誤 解 さ れ 、 係 の 人 に 注 意 を 受 け て い る 。 当 時 入 札 す る 時 の 方 法 と し て は 、 い ろ い ろ あ っ た 。 手 を上 げ た り、 大 声 を だ し た り、 鼻 を 触 っ た り。 ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク は カ タ ロ グ を 持 っ た 手 を 上 げ て 振 っ た よ う で あ る 。 原 稿 を 競 り落 と した ロ ー ゼ ンバ ッ ク の 廻 り に は リ ポ ー タ ー が 群 が っ て い た 。 ベ ン ソ ン と 父 親 の エ イ ブ ラ ム ソ ン も彼 に 近 寄 り、 そ し て 友 人 で あ り、2度 も原 稿 を 手 に 入 れ た ロ ー ゼ ン バ ッ ク に 「ま だ あ の 原 稿 を 読 み 終 わ っ て い な い の か い?」 と お 祝 い の 代 わ りの 言 葉 を か け た 。 し か し、 ロ
