Abstract

Inthepresentstudy,theeffectofchangesindietaryproteinlevelonthegrowthrateandnitrogen balancewereinvestigatedinlambsafterweaning.Using2twinsoflambsweanedat55daysafterbirth, eachoftwinswereallocatedintotwogroups,whichtheywerefedhighprotein(HP)orlowprotein(LP) diet;1.8or1.2timesofmaintenancelevelrespectively.Thedietwasconsistedwithtimothyhay,rolled barleyandsoy-protein.Feedintakeandbodyweightweremeasureddailyandweekly,respectively,and thenitrogen(N)balancetrialwasconductedat1,2and3week,and2,3and5monthafterweaning.The dailygain(DG)throughtheexperimentalperiodwas153and142(g/d)inHPandLPgroupsofJapanese Corriedalelambs,andthatwasalso235and145(g/d)inHPandLPgroupsofcrossbred(Japanese CorriedaleX Suffolk)lambs,respectively.TheN consumptionwasmoreinHPgroupthaninLPgroup duringtheperiod,andthen,NretentioninthebodywasalsogreaterinHPgroupthaninLPgroup,and thesephenomenawouldreflectonthegrowthrateintwogroupsdescribedabove.OnthechangesinN balanceduringtheperiod,theintakeincreasedbuttotalexcretionalsoincreasedalongwithaging,and consequently,theratioofretentiontoabsorptiontendedtodecreaseasawhole.TheN retentiontended todecreaseinLPgroup,althoughthattendedtoincreaseinHPgroupalongwithaging.TheretainedN permetabolicbodyweight(KgW0.75)didnotchangeinLPgroupthoughitdecreasedinHPgroupafter 2month. ThesefindingssuggestthatthechangeintheDG oflambingrowingstageisobviously influencedbychangesinretainedN causedbychangesindietaryproteinlevel.
