Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique, Malawi on 14 March and Zimbabwe on 15 with disastrous floods in southern Africa. “After the flooding subsided perhaps the rescue operations would be in progress”, said Mr. Gomo from Zimbabwe, who has been apprehensive for the victims’ safety.
Mr. Gomo is a police officer working at the Zimbabwe Republic Police Headquarters in the capital city, Harare. Now he is learning a course called ICT for the Improvement of Government Capacity and Services in JICA Okinawa Center. ”We are in the progress of computerizing our police operations so that we leverage our capability to offer services to the citizens. The knowledge which I’m gaining here is going to contribute directly to the police organization and the country at large”.
Mr. Gomo hopes for more active interaction between Zimbabwe and Japan. He said, “I’m encouraging Zimbabweans to come for making studies regarding various technologies which Japan has. If the number of opportunities is increased, it will be quite good for our country”.
In addition, Mr. Gomo indicated that Zimbabwe is a multi-cultural society. He talked about Zimbabwean culture, totems. “Totems are emblems symbolized by animals or objects of natural resources and varying family to family. Telling what your totem is common and it serves to unite the society. For example, if yours is an elephant, the totem signifies steadiness and respectability at the same time”.

(Photo taken at JICA Okinawa Center) 3 月 14 日のモザンビーク、マラウイに続き、15 日にはジンバブエを襲ったサイク ロン・イダイ(Idai)は、アフリカの南部に大規模な水害をもたらしました。その被災者 の安否を気遣い、「大水が引いた後の救出活動が進められているだろう」と話のす のは、ジンバブエ出身のゴモさんです。 ゴモさんは首都ハラレにあるジンバブエ共和国警察庁に勤務する警官です。JICA 沖縄センターの研修コース、行政サービス改善のための ICT 利活用を学んでいま す。「我々が、国民に提供できる行政サービスの活用を目的とする業務の電子化が 進められています。ここで得られる知識は、警察組織と国家全体へ直接寄与するも のです」。 ゴモさんは、日本とジンバブエのより盛んな交流を望んでいて、「日本が持つ様々 な技術について知得するため、ジンバブエの人々に日本へ行くことを勧めていま す。そうした機会が増えるのであれば、我々の国にとってとても良いことでしょう」と。 その他、ジンバブエは多文化社会であり、その中にトーテム(Totem)文化があるこ とを教えてくださいました。「トーテムは動物や鉱物などの天然資源に象徴される紋 章で、家ごとに異なります。自身のトーテムが何であるかを示すのは一般的で、そ れは社会との結びつきを促すものです。例えば、トーテムがゾウの人は、同時に堅 実、尊敬すべき人をも意味します」。 Goal 9: Industry Innovation and Infrastructure Interview with 持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）
