学院長挨拶

慶應義塾ニューヨーク学院（高等部）「道」第4号が完成致しました。 2019-2020年を迎えるにあたり、今年度が新時代の幕開けであると発表できることを嬉しく思います。生徒達が、慶應義塾大学や、その他の一流大学で力を発揮できるよう、教育的経験を強化するための一連の大改革を行ってまいります。この建設的な改革の目的は、学院生活全般に於いて教職員が生徒達に､きめ細かな指導を行うことにあります。中でも、寮生活の再編成が主眼の一つです。今年度から、寮はレジデントアドバイザーとヘッドに指導、育成される“ハウス”に分けられます。このハウスシステムは、寄宿生活をするうえでの最も重要なものとなるでしょう。生徒たちは、学業、クラブ活動や人との関わり、ハウスでの活動等を通して、お互いに尊重し、助け合いながら、コミュニティーを築いていくわけです。もちろん、教育改革をすることも当学院を改善する重要課題です。この改革は、慶應義塾大学進学に必要な学力を身につけさせながら、特に英語力の向上を最優先にしたものです。今年度から数年にかけて行う改革は、学院の更なる向上の為であること、また、掲載している数々のイベントや活動の一部を「道」第４号を通し紹介することにより、学院のユニークさや、素晴らしさを皆様にご理解頂ければ幸いです。今後とも、ご支援を賜りますようお願い申し上げます。

Our School Journal

Greetings! Welcome to the fourth edition of the school journal, “Keio Academy: A Day in the Life.” With the arrival of the 2019-2020 academic year, I am pleased to announce a new era. This year will witness a range of bold reforms that are designed to strengthen the students’ educational experience, while presenting a pathway that will prepare all for success at Keio University and other elite institutions.

The purpose of these positive changes is to provide pastoral care throughout the academy’s community. One of the centerpieces of this reorganization is the residential system. Commencing this year, the residence halls will be divided into houses that are nurtured by a Resident Advisor and Head of House. These houses will become the focal point of the boarding school experience. Students will forge a community that respects and supports each other throughout their academic learning, social engagements, and house activities. Academic reform will also be a key element in improving our academy. Strengthening English language skills is the top priority, while upholding the high academic standards that are necessary for entering Keio University.

With all of these beneficial enhancements in store for the academy over the next few years, I am excited to share with you this fourth edition of “Keio Academy: A Day in the Life.” I believe that the events and descriptions in the journal provide a snapshot of the plethora of experiences that make our school so unique and wonderful! 入学準備プログラム

2019年8月27日、本年度の新入生を迎え、キャンパスは活気づきました。数か月に及ぶ準備を経て､生徒ヘルパーや担当教員によって、新９年生、新10年生は大歓迎されました。８５名の新入生は、寮生活、学業等、ニューヨークでの学院生活全般に順応できるよう６日間のプログラムに参加しました。生徒は、本学院ならではの教育環境に少しでも早く慣れるよう自立した生活を強調した綿密なスケジュールをこなし、各ワークショップでは、学業、健康管理、そして寮生活について学びました。プリエントリー中の６日間、新入生同士が、打ち解けやすいイベントが種々企画され、お互いを知るチャンスができ、親睦を深めました。このプログラム終了時での新入生の笑顔は、始業日にもきっと見られることでしょう。

Pre-Entry Program

On August 27, 2019, the Keio Academy campus sprang to life with the arrival of this academic year’s new students. With months of preparation completed and student helpers and staff in place, the academy eagerly welcomed these ninth and tenth grade students with open arms. The 85 new students spent six days acclimating themselves to all aspects of their school environment including boarding, academics, and living in New York.

The students were led through a rigorous schedule of sessions that emphasized independent living and were designed to ease their transition to the academy’s unique educational environment. Various workshops focused on academic success, wellness issues, and navigating life at a boarding school. Throughout the six days, there were also many ice breakers designed to allow the students to get to know each other and to create lasting bonds of friendship. By the end of the pre-entry program, the smiling faces of the new students were a great indicator of future success as they began their first day of class.

入学式

2019年9月4日、スピーカーズ・ホールにニューヨーク学院関係者及び在校生が集い、新入生の入学を祝い2019-2020年度をスタート致しました。希望に満ちた新入生の入場行進､着席後入学式が挙行されました。まず、タウンゼント学院長から、「学院の大改革をどのように進めていくのかについて」､「改革の焦点は、ハウスシステムの履行により寮生活の改革を行うことにある」､「寮の範例としてハウスシステムを全学年縦割り制にする。これは、通学生にも適用する。自己認識を深めることにより、調和が保て、目標に掲げる共同体意識を育むことになるからである。」との式辞がありました。続いて、長谷山塾長が、今回の教育改革によって、グローバル社会の先導者を育成できることを心より願っているとの祝辞を述べました。当学院理事長の國領慶應義塾常任理事から、阪田奨学金12年生の受給者が発表されました。高らかな塾歌斉唱で、式典は幕を閉じ、引き続きオリエンテーションが行われました。

Entrance Ceremony

On September 4, 2019, the entire school community gathered in the Speakers’ Hall to welcome the new students and celebrate the start of the 2019-2020 academic year. The event began with the procession of excited new students, who took their seats in the auditorium. The ceremony address was delivered by the President, Dr. Townsend. In his speech, Dr. Townsend explained how the academy was undergoing major reforms. A key focal point of these reforms was in the area of boarding with the implementation of a house system. This boarding paradigm vertically integrates all grades into a series of houses, which incorporates commuters as well. The goal is to foster a close-knit community, which achieves harmony through a better sense of self-awareness. The congratulatory speech was given by the President of Keio Gijuku, Professor Haseyama. President Haseyama stated how he fervently wishes that these educational reforms will nurture individuals who can easily navigate and lead in a global society. Professor Kokuryo, a Vice President of Keio Gijuku and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Keio Academy, announced the Sakata Scholarship winners in the senior class. After an uplifting performance of the Keio Alma Mater, the Entrance Ceremony transitioned to a brief orientation session.

ニューヨークヤンキース観戦ツアー

9月20日（日）､秋晴れのなか、57名の生徒たちはヤンキースタジアムで、ニューヨークヤンキースとトロントブルージェイズの試合を観戦しました。生徒たちは早めに到着し、ヤンキースグッズを購入したり、スタジアムならではの買い物も楽しむことができました。この試合の前日、ヤンキースは2012年以来初めての地区部門のタイトルを獲得し、チームにとってプレイオフのための大切な一戦でした。試合が始まる前、今年度末に引退するヤンキースの投手を長年務めてきたCCサバシアの引退式も、家族出席のもと盛大に行われました。この日の試合では、ヤンキースが終始リードし、8対3でヤンキースが大勝しました。生徒たちは、この試合を満喫し、ヤンキースタジアムから学院に戻りました。

School Trip To Yankee Game

On Sunday, September 20, the academy sponsored a trip to Yankee Stadium, the most famous sports venue in the United States. Fifty-seven students went to enjoy a game on a perfect weather day. The students arrived well before the game started, so there was ample time for all to explore and shop throughout the concourses of the stadium. The game was critical for the Yankees. The previous day, they had clinched their first divisional title since 2012 and needed to finish their season strong in order to gain home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The pregame activities featured a ceremony honoring the talented long-time Yankee pitcher, CC Sabathia, who will retire at the conclusion of the season. The pitcher’s entire family participated in this special moment. The Yankees cruised to an early lead over the Toronto Blue Jays and never trailed throughout the game. After a fun filled 8 to 3 Yankee victory, the students happily boarded their bus back to the academy.

体育祭（アスレチック・デー）

10月12日、爽やかな秋の日に毎年恒例の体育祭が開催されました。体育祭は、学校全体の結びつきを強くすることを目指すイベントです。年度が始まってすぐに行われるということもあり､生徒にとって、学年を越えた交流の出来る良い機会となっています。生徒はまず、開会式が行われる体育館に集まりました。体育祭実行委員から体育祭の概要が説明された後、生徒が体育祭のために制作したビデオ作品が披露されたり、準備体操が行われたりしました。その後、リレーや玉入れ、熱気あふれる綱引きなど、様々な競技を、生徒も、教員も、そして職員も一日中楽しみました。特にこの日のハイライトとなったのは、応援合戦です。各チームに与えられたパフォーマンスの時間は10分。どのチームも練りに練ったパフォーマンスを披露し、たくさんの時間をかけて準備してきたことがよく伝わってきました。音楽、ダンス、寸劇を複雑に組み合わせたパフォーマンスに、学生らしい熱意や気迫が感じられました。閉会式では優勝チームが紹介され、最後は全員でアイスクリームを食べて、楽しいひとときを過ごしました。

Athletic Day

It was a crisp autumn day on October 11, as the students gathered for the annual Athletic Day. The goal of the event is to unite the wider school community. Positioned at the beginning of the year, Athletic Day is an opportunity for students to develop personal relationships across grade levels.

In the morning, the students gathered in the gym for the Opening Ceremony. The short introduction included details from student leaders, a video montage, and a brief opportunity for everyone to stretch. Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed themselves throughout the day in a wide assortment of activities including relay races, ball tosses, and the ever competitive tug of wars. The highlight of the day was the cheering competition. Each team was allotted approximately ten minutes to perform a routine set to music. The group cheers were highly choreographed, as it was apparent that each team had spent hours preparing in the weeks leading up to the competition. The intricate performances combined music, dance, and storytelling together in a way that harnessed all of the enthusiasm and spirit that the students had to offer. During the Closing Ceremony, the judges announced the winning teams. Athletic Day concluded with the entire student body enjoying a special ice cream social in the cafeteria!

親睦会（アイスブレーカー）

10月19日、暖かい土曜日の夕食後に、生徒会主催のアイスブレーカーがダイニングホールで開かれました。毎年盛り上がるこのイベントですが、今年も大勢の生徒が集まりました。このイベントは特に、生徒同士の絆を深めること、あるいは学校の精神を皆で共有することを目指して行われています。司会者が登壇して自己紹介をし、演目を紹介すると、いよいよアイスブレーカーの始まり。ロックバンドやZion(ダンス部)など、個性豊かな生徒達のパフォーマンスが披露され、皆を楽しませました。なお、パフォーマンス中の音響や照明を担当したのはパブリックアドレスグループ(PAG)の生徒達。プロ顔負けの技術でイベントを支えました。この時間、歓声と拍手は途切れることなく続き、イベントが終わる頃にはコミュニティの連帯感が大いに高まっていました。

Ice Breaker Event

On October 19, during a warm Saturday evening, the Student Government hosted the annual Ice Breaker Event in the Dining Hall. Held right after dinner, this activity drew a full crowd as this popular event is always widely anticipated. The goal is to bring together the student body in an atmosphere that builds personal bonds and school spirit. The program began with the emcees introducing themselves and disseminating information about how the evening would unfold. The school’s impressive reservoir of talent was on full display, as rock band groups and Zion dance ensembles dazzled and entertained the elated crowd. The Ice Breaker also had a professional quality to it as the academy’s Public Address Group (PAG) expertly handled the lights and sound. Throughout the evening, there was endless cheering and clapping, which resulted in a swelling of pride and sense of community by the end of the event.

仮装大会（コスチューム・デー）

第一クオーター試験終了後、生徒たちは毎年恒例のコスチューム・デーを心待ちにしています。生徒会主催のこのイベントは生徒が最も楽しみにしているイベントの一つです。イベントに先立ち、校舎には蜘蛛の巣､お化け、小鬼、悪霊などの伝統的なハロウィーンの飾りが施されます。その日が始まると生徒たちは手作りや市販のコスチュームを身にまといます。多くのコスチュームは本や映画、アニメやビデオゲームのキャラクターを基にしています。生徒たちはそのキャラクターになりきって、ワンシーンを演じたり、セリフを言ったりします。数え切れない程の写真やビデオを記念に撮って、学校全体でコスチューム・デーを楽しむのです。

Costume Day

After the conclusion of the first quarter exams, students always look forward to their annual Costume Day. Sponsored by the Student Government, this is one of the most anticipated days on campus. Leading up to the event, the main academic building is transformed into a traditional Halloween setting, complete with cobwebs, ghosts, goblins, and ghouls. At the start of the day, students enthusiastically displayed their handcrafted or store-bought costumes. Many costumes were based on characters from books, movies, anime, and video games. Students performed scenes and recreated dialogue based on their characters. Countless pictures and videos were taken to commemorate this event as the entire school community enjoyed Costume Day.

ブロードウェイ観劇

11月8日（金）、12年生の希望者は、今、話題にのぼっているブロードウェイショー、ディズニーの『フローズン』を授業終了後、観に行きました。ブロードウェイショー観劇は、生徒たちにとって、ミュージカルを楽しむだけではなく、ニューヨーク市内を垣間見るチャンスでもあり、アメリカ文化に触れることができました。マンハッタンに到着後はシアター地区で、それぞれに、いろいろなレストランで食事をしました。『フローズン』の上演では、素晴らしい衣装、歌そして演技が披露されました。生徒たちは、マンハッタンでの観劇を満喫しました。

Broadway Trip

On Friday, November 8, a select group of senior students with their chaperones took an excursion to see one of the hottest musicals on Broadway: Disney’s Frozen. Attending Broadway plays provides our students with the opportunity to see New York City and be immersed in an English-speaking environment. The students departed from the school by bus around 3:30pm, after their last class. Upon their arrival in Manhattan, they disembarked and dined at various local restaurants in the theater district. The performance of Frozen showcased fabulous costumes, wonderful songs, and fantastic acting. The students thoroughly enjoyed the show and their Manhattan experience.

現地校との文化交流

11月12日ニュージャージー州のパセイックカウンティテクニカル高校（PCTI）の生徒たちが来校しました。PCTIの生徒たちは当学院生とパートナーを組んで日本文化を代表する折り紙や版画体験をした後、剣道部のデモンストレーションを見学しました。そこでは初めて竹刀を握り、面を恐る恐る打つ姿も見られました。カフェでのランチ、そして各教科の授業参加を通して友情を育んだ様子でした。最後に両校の生徒たちは別れを惜しむように記念撮影をしたり、SNSの連絡先を交換し合い有意義な文化交流の一日が終わりました。

Cultural Exchange

Cultural exchanges with other schools are an important component of the experiential learning process at the academy. On November 12, Keio Academy hosted Passaic County Technical Institute (PCTI) students from New Jersey. Upon their arrival that morning, the PCTI students and chaperones were promptly escorted to the first floor Study Hall. After brief introductions and an explanation of the schedule, PCTI students and their Keio Academy counterparts were split into two groups. The first group remained in the Study Hall and rotated between stations, where they all engaged in origami and woodblock printing activities. The second group of PCTI students went with their Keio hosts to experience a Kendo demonstration. The Keio Kendo Club provided a wonderful tutorial for their new friends, as the PCTI students learned a few basic Kendo moves. For the rest of the day, the visitors attended classes and enjoyed lunch in the dining hall with their hosts. Prior to departing, all participating students posed for group photos and exchanged social media information. Once again, the cultural exchange was a tremendous success, as many new friendships had blossomed.

保護者歓迎行事（ペアレンツ・デー）

11月下旬、ニューヨーク学院では毎年恒例のペアレンツデーが開催され、多くの保護者の皆さんがキャンパスを訪れました。複数日にわたるこのイベントは、木曜日の夜にスピーカー・ホールで行われたコンサートで幕を開け、到着した家族は生徒たちの歌や演奏を楽しみました。　金曜日、ペアレンツデーは本格的に始まります。朝、スピーカーズ・ホールの受付で保護者の皆さんにスケジュールが配布され、ハウスの説明会が行われました。その後、教室棟で各クラスの担任による説明会もありました。各教科担当教員が、保護者の皆さんからの質問を受けながら、各教科のカリキュラムや授業の進め方についてのプレゼンテーションを行いました。午後からは保護者と担当教員の個人面談時間が設けられました。　夕刻、教職員と保護者がダイニング・ホールでのレセプションに参集し、タウンゼント学院長のスピーチで幕を閉じました。その後、寮の主催によるハーベスト・フェスティバルが教室棟の入口で行われました。各ハウスから､日本的なおでん､アメリカ的なホットチョコレートやスモアなどがふるまわれました。参加者は、芸術的に彫刻されたカボチャを鑑賞しながら、おいしい食べ物を味わいました。翌日の土曜日は、教員だけでなく寮監との個人面談も行われました。

Parents’ Weekend

At the end of November, Keio Academy hosted its annual Parents’ Weekend. Many families attended the multiday event that was packed with activities.

The event commenced on Thursday evening with performances by talented student musicians and singers in the Speakers’ Hall. The concert had a very festive atmosphere, as parents were excited to see their children perform.

On Friday morning, Parents’ Weekend began in earnest in the Speakers’ Hall, as the information desk welcomed all parents and distributed schedules. House sessions and group meetings with homeroom teachers started the day. This was immediately followed by classroom presentations. During the sessions, subject teachers described their classes and methodologies, while taking questions from parents. Following lunch, there were individual meetings between parents and teachers.

Late Friday, the parent, teacher, and staff reception was conducted in the Dining Hall, ending with a speech from President Townsend. The crowd then transitioned to the outside entrance of the school’s academic building to attend the Harvest Festival hosted by the Resident Advisor staff. Each house tended its own station, offering a traditional Japanese or American food or beverage including oden, hot chocolate, and s’mores. There was even a food truck providing delicious offerings for those in attendance while the crowd enjoyed the wonderfully carved pumpkins on display. Parents had additional opportunities to meet with the Resident Advisors and faculty throughout the day on Saturday. By that evening, Parents’ Weekend successfully concluded.

文化部及びその組織紹介

年度の初めに、新入生向けに放課後の部活動紹介フェアが開催されました。今年度の文化部・コミュニティーサービスグループは下記のとおりです。バトミントン書道チアーダンス棋道コーラスコミュニティーサービス福沢研究会剣道数学オーケストラ写真ロックバンドラグビー理科茶道 ZION　ヒップホップダンス

コミュニティーサービスは Junior Academic Extension プログラムに含まれ、近隣のコミュニティーへのボランティア活動の一環として、2019年度に新たに設けられました。今年度は Amani Public Charter School の行っている恵まれない家庭への玩具を贈るボランティアや、乳癌患者支援のチャリティーウォークに参加しました。

Cultural Clubs & Community Service

To entice students to get involved in after school programs, the academy hosted an activities fair at the start of the year. The wide selection of clubs and organizations included:

Zion (a hip hop dance club) A new Community Service Program was instituted for the 2019-2020 academic year. With its inclusion in the Junior Academic Extension Program, community service was emphasized as a pathway for students to volunteer and give back to the local community. A few examples of Keio Academy students helping others include their participation in the Amani Public Charter School’s Toy Drive and the Breast Cancer Charity Walk.

生徒ボランティアによる補習授業（ピアチューター活動）

「半学半教」は慶應ニューヨーク学院の教育哲学の中でも重要な部分を占めるといえます。これは、教える者も教わる者も共に学問を追究するという理念です。この理念は、25年間以上カウンセリング室で行われているピアチューターに反映されています。このシステムでは学習支援を求める生徒たちのためにピアチューターが１対１の学習指導を行っています。2019-2020年度は様々な教科を教える総勢32名のピアチューターがいました。リクエストが多い教科については複数のピアチューターが小グループ単位で、後輩たちに教えることもありました。このシステムを通し、年間延べ約1000名の生徒が、教科学習の支援を受け、大きな成果を出しています。

Peer Tutoring

The concept of “Half Learning, Half Teaching” is an important component of the educational philosophy at Keio Academy of New York. This time-tested tradition at Keio Gijuku states that those who learn first will teach the rest. Administered by the Counseling Department,

this tradition is over 25 years old and is defined by a system where peer tutors provide one–on-one academic guidance for students requesting assistance. For the 2019-2020 school year, there were a total of 32 peer tutors for a variety of subjects. In high volume subject areas, multiple peer tutors were deployed to help small groups of underclassmen. Throughout the year, it is typical for the Counseling Department to receive approximately 1,000 requests for assistance, resulting in a hugely successful program!

ハウス主催のホリデーパーティー

毎年恒例のホリデーパーティに向けた準備をしている生徒たちを見ていると、12月の到来を感じます｡今年のイベントはそれぞれのハウスキャプテンの企画の元、ハウス主催で、パーティは教室棟のロタンダで行われました。伝統的なクリスマスツリーは、生徒たちの折り紙のオーナメントで彩られました。ロックバンド部やザイオンのダンスグループによるパフォーマンスが披露されました。今年初の試みとなるハウス毎のパフォーマンスでは、生徒たちの才能を生かした独創的な出し物が印象的でした。参加者は、季節のお菓子を摘まんだり、文化祭実行委員会が作成したクリスマスらしい壁紙の前で友達との記念撮影したりしました。生徒たちにとって忘れられない思い出のイベントになったことでしょう。

Holiday Party Sponsored by Houses

With the arrival of December, the spirit of the season began permeating throughout campus as the students started preparing for their annual holiday party. This year’s festive event was hosted by the six residential houses and planned by the House Captains. The party took place in the rotunda of the first floor of the main academic building. A traditional Christmas tree, brimming with beautiful student crafted origami ornaments, adorned the first floor. The students were entertained during the event by rock band musical numbers and Zion dance routines. A new feature this year was a Talent Show. Each house sponsored a performance that highlighted the creative and diverse skills of various students. All in attendance enjoyed the event as they sampled seasonal treats and posed for pictures in a photo booth and in front of meticulously created seasonal backdrops. Many joyous memories were made throughout the evening!

9年生と教員との昼食会

また、もう一つの新たな試みとして、教員が生徒とランチを共にする時間が設けられました。食事の時を共に過ごすことで親睦を深める事を目的とし、今年度は9年生のみ、6人程度のグループが毎週金曜日教職員と共にランチを食べました。英語で会話をする機会でもあるこの時間では個人的な話題から世界の時事ニュースまで幅広い話題が飛び交いました。栄養バランスの考えられた美味しい食事と共に英語での会話を楽しんだようです。

Faculty Lunches with the Ninth Graders

Another successful reform instituted this past year was the concept of faculty and staff eating lunch with the students. This traditional boarding school concept of sharing meals as a way to enhance community bonding was established in September, with assigned faculty members dining with the entire ninth grade at reserved tables in the Dining Hall. Every Friday, during the designated lunch period, each participating educator dined with a rotating group of approximately six students. With the focus on conversing in English, students and adults exchanged opinions and ideas on everything from personal and school topics to current events throughout the world. By the end of each lunch period, all staff and ninth graders were satiated with the combination of healthy food and invigorating conversation.

ハウスシステム

今年から寮では新たにハウス制度を導入しました。このシステムは家庭にいるような快適な生活環境をつくるため、生徒たちは学年を問わず６つのハウスに分かれ、そこが学生生活の中心となっています｡様々なハウス主催のイベントを通して自尊心と責任感を育て、お互いを支え合うこを目標としています｡今年はタイダイシャツ作り、ボードゲームナイト、ホリデーショッピングなど生徒たちが主体となって企画、運営されました。今後この制度が生徒間に浸透していくにつれ、ハウス間でよきライバル心が生まれ、ディベート大会や音楽会、そしてスポーツ大会などを通して競い合っていく事ができることを願っています。

House System

One of the exciting new features of the boarding environment at the academy has been the implementation of the traditional and effective House System. This type of boarding experience has divided the residence halls into six socials that are vertically integrated by grade levels. The goal is to create a sense of belonging within a comfortable home atmosphere. The house system at the academy will be nurtured to create a sense of pride, responsibility, and accomplishment, while also inspiring members to support each other. Recent events undertaken by various houses include a tie-dye shirt activity, game nights, a holiday shopping excursion to the mall, and an outing to Pumpkin Blaze, a local pumpkin carving display. As the house system takes root, there will eventually be friendly rivalries between the houses that will take place in the form of debates, musical competitions, and athletic matches.

土曜日プログラム（音楽と美術）

2019 -2020年度の改革の特徴的な一つとして、ジュニア(9年生と10年生)のためにアレンジされた音楽とアートプログラムがあります。これらのクラスは、ニューヨーク校で世界レベルの寮制学校体験を作り出すという設定の中で考案されました。土曜日の朝、ジュニア達の参加する音楽プログラムの合唱では、ボーカルトレーニングを重点的に行います。その後、様々なアートや音楽の授業にも参加します。アートプログラムでは、表現主義の描写、版画や静物画が含まれ、音楽プログラムは､ブラスバンド、コーラスクラス、2段階のレベルに分かれたオーケストラ(弦楽器は初心と上級)で構成されています。今年度最初の土曜日プログラムの結果には目覚ましいものがあり、このプログラムを更に充実させて参ります。

Saturday Art & Music Program

One of the signature reforms of the 2019-2020 school year has been the creation of a structured music and art program for juniors (9th and 10th graders). These classes were developed with the intent of creating a world-class boarding school experience at Keio Academy of New York. On a typical Saturday morning, all the juniors engage in the choral aspect of the music program, which emphasizes vocal training. Afterwards, students participate in a variety of art and music classes. Art program offerings include expressionist drawing, printmaking, and still life drawing. The music curriculum is comprised of a brass band, chorus classes, and two levels of orchestra (strings for beginners and advanced). The results of this first year of the Saturday Program have been extraordinary, and plans are in place to expand this going forward.

運動部活動記録

ニューヨーク学院には、長年にわたって多くの賞を獲得し、チャンピオンシップ進出を果たしている運動部の活躍という誇るべき伝統があります。学院では秋、冬、春シーズンを通じて様々な運動部への参加の機会があります。運動部はニューヨーク州公立高校スポーツ協会セクション１ウェストチェスター郡内の他校と高いレベルで競い合っています。放課後や週末には、慶應の人工芝フィールド、体育館や隣接するマンハッタンビル・カレッジの施設で運動部が練習に励んでいる姿をよく目にします。今年度の秋シーズン、冬シーズンでも、学院運動部は、その実力を発揮しました。女子バレーボール部、女子バスケットボール部は、セクショナル・トーナメントに進出しました。クロスカントリー部では、3人の女子部員がニューヨーク州チャンピオン大会に出場しました。残念ながら春シーズンは新型コロナウイルス感染拡大の影響で中断となってしまいました。

Athletics (Sports Program)

Keio Academy of New York has a long and proud tradition of athletic success as it has garnered many titles and championships over the years. The academy offers an array of opportunities for athletic participation throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Our teams compete at a high level within the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Section One against other American schools located in Westchester County. During the afternoons and weekends, it is common to find Keio’s sports teams engaged in practice on the academy’s state-of-the-art turf field, in the school’s gymnasium, or at neighboring Manhattanville College’s facilities.

The athletic prowess of the academy was once again on display throughout the academic year’s fall and winter seasons. Many teams, such as Girls’ Volleyball and Girls’ Basketball advanced to their sectional tournaments. The Cross Country squad had another fantastic year as three male and three female athletes participated in the New York State Public High School Athletic Championship. Unfortunately, the spring season for all teams was cut short due to the disruptive coronavirus pandemic.

キャンドルウォーク

新型コロナウイルス感染拡大という緊急事態発生により、世界中で生活面全般の調整を余儀なくされています。ニューヨーク地域でも新型コロナウイルス感染が拡大したことによって、慶應NY学院は、学年途中から生徒は退寮し、オンラインでの学習に移行することになったため、荷造りに追われている最中、学院の伝統である12年生のキャンドルウォークが実施されました。3月8日、在校生や教職員が集い、卒業を控える12年生を祝福しました。フォーマルウエアーに身を包み､薔薇を携えた12年生が校舎に入場し、在校生や教職員から、祝福を受け歓談のひと時を過ごしました。翌日には全生徒が帰省し、オンラインでの学習を始めました。学院は、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大という緊急事態の為、卒業生を祝福するオンラインでの卒業式を6月 6日に挙行することを決定いたしました。

Senior Candlewalk

With the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, the world was forced to confront the issue and make adjustments to all facets of life. One result of the pandemic was that Keio Academy decided to transition to distance learning when it was apparent that the virus had infiltrated the New York region. In the midst of the school shifting to distance teaching and students packing, there was a moment set aside for one more honored academy tradition: the beloved Senior Candlewalk. On March 8, the school community gathered together to celebrate the soon-to-be departing seniors. Dressed in their formal attire, the twelfth graders carried roses as they commenced their procession through their school halls one last time as underclass students, faculty, and staff expressed their heart-felt goodbyes. The future graduates and underclass students returned to their homes in the following days and started distance learning. As a result of the continued global impact of the coronavirus, the academy decided to host a virtual graduation ceremony on June 6 to honor the Class of 2020. 2019- 2020
