Do you often read a newspaper or a book? Because I think it is difficult for me to read them, I don’t read them very often. Using the Internet is easier for me to get information which I want to know. So I often use the Internet. But from now on, I will read a newspaper every day. Today, I’m going to (あ)( tell / read / to / why / you / I / decided ) it.
Last month, my teacher told us that junior high school students and high school students don’t read a newspaper very often. The graph shows how junior high school students and high school students get information. Television is the most common for them. And family comes next for junior high school students, but for high school students cell phone comes next. More Junior high school students use PC than high school students. This was so interesting for me. I asked my teacher why this is so. She told us that most high school students have their own cell phone these days, so they usually use their cell phone to get information. We can find that they also get information from friends and teachers. Only 21% of high school students say that reading magazines is their way to get information. She taught us (い)why reading a newspaper is important for us. We learned that there are some reasons. When we get information from the Internet, we read only one article that we want to know. However, when we read a newspaper, we see many articles. Because it has many articles on one page, we can get more knowledge. Don’t you think it is a good point? Newspapers are also more believable than the Internet. There may be a lot of lies on the Internet, but newspaper articles are checked many times by the newspaper company.
She said to us “Many young people get information through the Internet, so they don’t buy books these days.” There are many difficult words in newspapers and books, so reading them is harder (う) using the Internet for young people. We can save much time by using the Internet when we want to know something, but we can get information about many events around you and in the world by reading newspapers or books. Especially books can make us happy, because by reading books we can learn people’s feelings.
So, I decided to read a newspaper every day and a book every month. Why don’t you read a newspaper or a book in your free time?

Mike : Good morning, Ken. How are you? Ken : Hi, Mike. I’m really fine.
Mike : You look excited. What happened?
Ken : Well, last Saturday was my birthday and my father bought me a new bike. I rode the bike to school this morning. Mike : That sounds wonderful. Do you usually come to school by bike?
Ken : Yes. I started coming to school by bike last July. I came to school by bus until then, but (あ)I didn’t like that. Mike : Why? I come to school by bus and on the bus I sometimes read books, study and sleep.
Ken : There were so many people on the bus that I had to keep standing. Also, I sometimes had to wait for my bus for a long time because it didn’t come on time.
Mike : I see. Now you don’t need to wait for your bus. But I think it (い)( me / to / too / is / come / for / hard ) to school by bike every morning. I will be very tired when I get to school.
Ken : At first, I was tired but now I feel really good when I ride my bike in the morning. I think riding a bike is good exercise. You will be very healthy if you come to school by bike.
Mike : But, (う) I don’t think you feel good on rainy days.
Ken : That’s the only problem I have. I can’t enjoy riding a bike when it is raining. We can’t use umbrellas while we are riding a bike because riding a bike with one hand is very dangerous. When it is raining, I have to take a bus. Mike : And on very hot days and very cold days, I don’t want to ride a bike, either. I think using a bus is better. Ken : Oh, wait. You have to think about it carefully. If you use your bike instead of a bus, you can save Earth. Mike : Save Earth? Why?
Ken : When you ride a bus or a car, they use fossil fuels and produce CO2. CO2 makes Earth warmer. This problem is
called global warming. Many people in the world are trying to solve it.
Mike : I have heard about it many times. Some countries are sinking under the sea. (え)That is the biggest problem we must solve. Now I understand that riding a bike is good for us and the earth. I have never come to school by bike, but I will try one day.
Ken : That’s very nice. Let’s come to school by bike together.
