Early Modern Englishの特徴
―16，7世紀の劇作を中心としてみた―

顧る言語の発達の過程に於て，一つの新しい段階の時期を決める事億甚だ困難な問題であ る．Modern Englishの始まりを，1450年からとする説1，或いは1550年からとする説三，そ の申間の玉500年からとする説3があるが，それぞれ理由のある事である．音声学・，語形論，統 語論等の立場から異なる結論に達する事は容易に想像出来る．
この小論は， Modern（or New）English runs from about 1500（or say−about the end of the reign of H：enry Vll）to the present day：1）ut it is℃1early necessafy to sllbdivide it at about 1700（say Queen A臨e s accession）into Early and：Latεr Modern English． For thbugh there are co血mon factors Fwhich make the teで血 suitable for the whole period， the Iangua、ge has changed so greatly betwee独 ：Henry Vlll s time and盃ow， that輌thout such subdivision the expressiOn Mo ・ ern for sixteehth・century works， foτinstance， is likely to sound一forごed or misle註dip9．
というC．：L．Wrenn4の説に従い， Early Modern Englishの・時期を1．500年からJohn・Dryden の死亡した1700年とし，この200年聞の英語の諸相を調べ．たものである。勿論調べる材料とし て下記のものは決．して充分でないが， 応この範囲内で，主に現代英語との比較を通して，動 詞に蘭するsynt欲の面から考察した．

使役動詞のmakeの後にtoのある例が散見される．
By my faith， then I say it will make

Another cause why they come not forward，

勿論，現・代英語と同じくtoのない例は例としてあげるまでもなく多い． toのある例は N伽，・411，γθ競θには全然見られないのは注意すべきである．
次にIetの例はmakeに比し，数が少ないが，そのいくつかをあげると，

以上のように．両方の形が見られる．
五 仮定法について
現代英語に比し，仮定法の著しく発達していた，この時期の英語にも，極く僅かの例だが，
現代英語に近づいている徴しが見られる．

（c）は，so〜（as）to doとasの略された．例が多いのと比較すると興味深い．
Iwould not， I warrant you， fall in such a rage
As so to refuse such a goodly personage．（」2〃ρ乃，111． iv．107−8）
so as toという普通の順序と比較すると， asとSOとの語源的な近親性が原因と考え
られる．

．Eθθy M伽の例は， do notと後のputsを比較すると興味深い．・4〃では直接法の例が多く なってはいるが，やはり仮定法が優勢である．
皿 dareの語尾変化について
lknow she loveth me， but she dare not speak．（Ralph，1， iv 163）
この．ように，dareは一sをとらなかったのに，次はようやく一sをとりかけた例で．ある．
He dares not see you． （Dz6 加∬，1V． i．27）
これ以後，dareは・sをとるようになっている， − Iet me see the wretch／That dares attempt to force me．（N6ω，1． iii．59）
：No man dares reprove him．（ll． ii．116）
Thou dar st not trust my
Passion：but thou may st． （ノ4〃， Act l． line 480）
Why should a Man like this，
Who dares not trust his fate for one．great action，

］y 非人称構文について
非人野洲丈が人称構丈に段々移行していった過程については，Kellnerが
This tendency to replace irnpersonal verbs by personal expressions may be seen at work in Middle English， but even as late as the Elizabethan times the process is not yet quite completed．， 5
と言っているように，この期間を通じ，いくつかのものが残っているので，それらの実態を以 下調べてみる．

．Foκ7では，他の12例すべて．人称構文である．1istに関しては，0， E Dに，非人称凡才の19 世紀の例が見られるが，殆んど完全に人称溝丈になったと考える事が出来る．

1〜〃助の5例のうち人称構丈が3で，非人称が2となっている．1istとlhstは，17世紙に は人称構丈としても殆ど用いられなくなっている．

Fo〃7では次の例だけが人称構文である．
Ilike full well this company．（Fo％7， Iine 290）
他はすべて非人称構丈である．
This liket血me we11， so mote I thee．（乃ゴ4．， line 322）
So help me God， it liketh not me：（乃ゴ4．， line 323）
・他の作品でも非人称動詞として使われている．
For it liked her as well， to tell you no lies，
As water in her ship， or salt cast in her eyes．（R〃1助， IU， ii，15−6）

但し2Vθω・では同じ例が他に2つあり，きまり文句だけで随われており，ノ111とy θ耽6に は非人称構文は全く見当らない．
N．4 pleaseについて
P1砿se、は16世紀は非人称動詞として，17世紀には次鐡こ人称動詞として使われるようにな ったと考えられる．
If it please you so to do． （Fz〃9θπε， Part One， line 571）
an please your maship （Rσ1助， i． iv．38）
My men come when it please them （乃ゴ4．，1． iv．98）
when him please （乃躍．，1． v．9）
She is， sir， and she is not， but it please her to whom；（0α挽〃z〃，lV． iv．4）

Nθωに於ては，非人称構丈5，人称構文10である．

この二例を比較すると，不定詞にtoが付き，下の例にはtoがないというだけでなく，
retireの前のcommaのためPleaseとretireの関係が薄くなって様子がわかる．
・411に於ける他の3附すべて人称構丈である．
7θ耽θに於ては非人称満州は見当らない．
Now your honour has been a Bu11， pray what
Beast will your Worship Please to be next P（7θ競θ， Act lll． line 89−90）
W．5 methinksとmeseemsについて
Methinketh8 this matter sufficient
To cause you to give jlldgement，（Fo％7， line 690）
このようにmethinketh叉はmethinksが普通だが， methinkも時々出てくる． Ah， each finger is a thumb today methink・（Rα1助，1・iii．70）この他にmethinkが2回， Gα〃22彫7
にもmethinkが2回見られる．
A〃にはme thinksが9回，γ θπ∫66には3回出ている．このようにmethinksが17世紀末 まで残っているのに，meseemsは比較的早く使われなくなっている．両者とも大体同じ意味 なので，一方だけが残ったのであろう．
But first me seemeth it were expedient That ye both name some indifferent man
For to give betwixt you the foresaid judgement．（Fμ196〃∫， Part Two， Iine 414）
次の例のようにit seemeth to meと姿を変えるのも時期が早く，
But best in these things， it seemeth to me，
To take no judgement llpon me；（Foπ7，1ines 1213−4）
N6ω，・411， y伽づεθ，には全然見当らない．

V．接続詞an（＝if）について
使用した作品に関する限り，ifの意味のanの使用が，この時代の一つの特徴をなしている と思われる．
OEDは ln this sense碗，α〃， is rare before 1600， when it appears occasionally in the dramatists， especially beforeゴ ， as碗 1ケ16αε6夕。％，碗 ω676， etc．
と説明しているが，劇作品でほ，このようなきまり丈句だけでなく自由に使われている。試み にi数を調べたら次のようになっている（但し上例のようなきまり三旬も含めて）．

0EDの説明でもわかるように，劇作晶は，小説，詩，論文とは油焼，用語航差がある事は 明白である．劇作晶では，an（叉はan and）は17世紀には段々用いられなくなっていく傾向 が見られる．

以上Early Modem Englishで書かれた劇作品を対象に，こ：の時期の英語を， syntaxの面 から，それも特に動詞を申心として概観したわけだが，英語量的観点からの概観の域を出てい ない．はしがきでも述べたように材料の点でもまだ研究の余地があり，初期近代英語はsyntax の面でも他に幾多の研究課題を蔵している．
初期近代英語が一番密接な関係にあるのは，やはり現代英語であるという観点から考察した わけであるが，この時期の英語は一方ではMEと接している事実から， ME更にOEとの比較 検討が必要であろう． （この小論は，第18回日本英交学会，九州支部大会での口頭発表の原稿 に加筆したものである）．
