模 型 千 円 札 Ⅰ

︾ 昨 年度︑赤瀬川原平︵一九三七│二〇

一四︶の作品が当館のコレクション

に初めて加わりました︒芸術家︑漫画家︑

イラストレーター︑小説家︑エッセイスト︑写真家など多面的な活動で知られる赤瀬川は六〇年代前半︑高松次郎︑中西夏之

らとともにハイレッド・センターという前衛美術のグループを結成していたことで

も有名です︒高松︑中西の作品は既に所蔵されていますので︑今回の収蔵でハイ

レッド・センターの三人が所蔵作品のなか

でようやく集結を果たしました︵ただし高

松においては︑ハイレッド・センターの活動時

期の作品をまだ収蔵していません︶︒

  このたび収蔵したのは︑赤瀬川の﹁千円札事件関係﹂の作品・資料群です︒掲載図版はそのうちのひとつ︑︽模型千円札Ｉ︾︵一九六三年︶︒これは赤瀬川の個展﹁あい

まいな海について﹂に際して作られたも

ので︑展覧会情報の書かれた面の裏側に緑色の千円札が原寸大で印刷されていま

す︒赤瀬川は本物の紙幣であるかのよう

に現金書留で︑一〇〇名ほどにこれを送付しました︒言わば︑洒落の利いた展覧会の招待状のようなものとも捉えられる

でしょう︒であるならば︑一抹の疑念を抱

く人もいるかもしれません︒これは﹁作品﹂

ではなく﹁印刷物﹂ではないか︑と︒確かに

これはものとして見れば印刷物でしょう︒

しかしのちの展開を経て︑単なる印刷物 に留まるものではなくなったのです︒

  赤瀬川は︑︽模型千円札Ｉ︾を制作した

のち︑更に複数のバージョンの模型千円札を印刷し︑そしてそれらを事物の梱包

に用いてオブジェ作品として展示したり︑

テレビ番組内のパフォーマンスで燃やした

りしていました︒やがて︑この千円札の存在は別件を捜査していた警察官に偶々発見され︑赤瀬川は﹁通貨及証券模造取締法﹂違反のもと一九六五年に起訴され︑法廷で争うことになったのです︒法廷では︑

ハイレッド・センターの作品群が証拠品と

して陳列され︑法廷が展覧会場のように

なったり︑弁護側の証言者である批評家

たちが自らの芸術的知見を次々と披歴す

るため︑講義の場のようになったり︑ある

いは法廷外でも侃々諤々の議論が重ねら

れました︒その結果︑法廷闘争やそれに付随する言説空間が︑富井玲子氏の言葉

を借りれば︑﹁一種の︿作品空間﹀﹂としか形容できない事態となったのです︒つまり﹁模型千円札﹂そのものが自律した作品で

あるというより︑その制作に端を発した一連の過程が芸術的実践と捉えられるの

です︒なお︑赤瀬川は一九六七年六月︑懲役三カ月︑執行猶予一年の一審判決を受

けました︒法廷はこれらが芸術的評価を受けるものだとしても︑犯罪であるという判断を下したのでした︒︵企画課研究員 桝田倫広︶
