7101: Procedures for Declaring Accompanied Personal Effects to Customs

When entering Japan (returning to Japan), you are required to make a written declaration about your belongings obtained in foreign countries.

Two copies of a written declaration are required, if you have unaccompanied articles.(Be sure to declare it upon entering Japan because you cannot declare it after entry.)

Japan Customs recommends submitting declarations electronically via the Customs Declaration App, etc.

Forms for “Declaration of Personal Effects and Unaccompanied Articles” are available on the plane, the ship, or at Customs . Please fill out the declaration form before going through Customs inspection.

In addition, in cases where you bring commercial cargo or costly goods into Japan, you may be required to take the same import procedures as those for the general cargo.

(Article 6-2,8,67,105 of Customs Law, Article 59 of the Cabinet Order for Enforcement of the Customs Law, Article 14 of the Cabinet Order for Enforcement of the Customs Tariff, and General Notification 67-4-10 of Customs Law)
