Abstract

Effects of perceived distancen by reaching on depth scaling

Keisuke NONAKA

When we see a three-dimensional object, distance information between the object and the observer is required to calculate the veridical depth within the object from the binocular disparity. However, the distance is overestimated at a short viewing distance and underestimated at a long viewing distance. Accordingly, the depth within the object is also erroneously perceived. With the development of virtual reality technology in recent days, it became possible for observers not only to see the virtual world but also to virtually touch the object in the world by self-motion. In these contents, manipulating the virtual body, the position of observers body can be perceived by proprioception and the visual feedback of the virtual self-body. Thus, when observer reaches to a three-dimensional object, it is possible that the erroneously perceived distance may be corrected, and accordingly the perceived depth within an object may also be corrected.

In this study, participants conducted a depth adjustment task of the object in virtual space and examined how the reaching movement to the object before this depth task affects the scaling of the depth. The results showed that while the reaching procedure tended to reduce the extent of wrong estimation of depth, there was no significant main effect of the procedure. There was an interaction effect of reaching and difference of ascending and descending series at a specific viewing distance (55 cm). From the results, it is suggested that although the correction tended to be made by reaching procedure when the degree of over- or underestimation is large, the distorted depth perception may increase depending on the position and structure of the object.
