りてらこや新潟 http://www.literakoya-niigata.org/index.html literakoya_niigata@yahoo.co.jp 090-6684-2346 (代表 佐々木香織)
2 Before going to school
At schools in Japan lessons in all subjects are held in Japanese. Friends too will speak only in Japanese. Although because they learn English in class and they may be able to talk in English about simple things. However, if you are going to live for a long time in Japan from now, it will be very useful to learn Japanese. Also for people who want to go on to High School, you should study Japanese otherwise you can not take the entrance exams. Because all the entrance exams are written in Japanese, even English exams.
In Japan 97% of students go on to High School. Also there are few jobs for Junior high School qualifications and the conditions are not so good.
In High School too classes are in Japanese so if you can not understand what teachers say it will be difficult to graduate the high school.
Therefore although it might be hard to master Japanese as a foreign language, let’s begin to study and go on step by step.
Three alphabets are used in Japanese; Kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese), Hiragana and Katakana. First let’s learn the most used alphabet, Hiragana. At first the Roman alphabet will show the pronunciation. However, to learn the ‘real’ pronunciation please ask native Japanese speakers and listen and learn from them around you.
Moreover, please don’t forget your mother tongue. Your mother tongue, your own language is the very important foundation to gain new knowledge and think deeply and fully. Please keep reading books in your own language and writing to friends back home. This will help you improve your Japanese.
If you have any enquiries about the learning Japanese or schools in Japan, please feel free to contact us.

The character「を」 is a particle which indicates the subject of a verb. It is pronounced like ‘o’.
(例)for example; みずを のむ (Drink water) りんごを たべる (eat an apple) しゃしんを とる (Take a photo).
Another particle is the character 「は」,pronounced the same as 「わ」. (例)For example; わたしは にほんじん です。(I am a Japanese.) これは わたしのほん です。(This is my book).
「へ」is another particle, it is pronounced [e], the same as「え」. 例:がっこうへ いきます。(Go to school).
うちへ かえります。 (Return home)
The pronunciation of 「ん」changes according to the sound which follows it, but to Japanese it often sounds the same.

のアクセント Accent of Japanese language
Unlike Chinese or Tai, Japanese is not tonal; the pitch of a letter does not change. Each word has a fixed tonal pitch. For example, the word 箸はし
(Chopsticks) is a high 「は」and a low 「し」.) While 橋はし (Bridge) is a low 「は」 and a high 「し」. However this pattern can change from region to region and if the word is connected to another word that too can change the
pattern. At first it is best to not worry about this too much. Try to learn by copying your friends and the class teacher.

Typing Japanese on a computer
There are five vowels in Japanese a,i,u,e,o, using the alphabet if an ‘a’ is typed「あ」 appears, if an ‘i’ is typed 「い」appears. Usually if after typing F7 is pushed the letter will change to Katakana. If before starting full size Katakana letter mode is selected, then when typing all the letters will be in Katakana.
Other letters are typed much the same as in the Roman alphabet. If “ta” is typed 「た」appears, “ga” and 「が」 appears.
The sign for making a sound long in Katakana a「ー」, is to the right of 0(ゼロ) on the keyboard.
In the case of “n”, if it is followed by a consonant (k,s,t,h,m,g,z,d,b,p) it will appear as 「ん」, when there is no letter behind it a double n, “nn”, has to be typed to make it appear as an「ん」.
To make a small「ヤ」「ユ」 or「ヨ」, type a ‘y’ between the consonant and the vowel. For example, to type Cathy in katakana キャシー, type in “kyashi-“. For Houston in katakana ヒューストン, type “hyu-suton”.
Type in; “sha”, “shu”, or “sho” and シャ シュ ショ appear, type “cha”, “chu” or “cho”, and チャ チュ チョ will appear.
To make a small 「ツ」、「つ」appear, the consonant is entered twice. For example, for 「きっぷ」 “kippu” and for 「きっさてん」enter “kissaten”. For a small a,i,u, e or o(アイウエオ) before the vowel enter an “x” or an “l”, for example,” xi” and “li” both become small「イ」.
In the case of “fi”, “va” and “we”, 「フィ,ヴァ,ウェ」enter either “fi” or “fu+xi” which =「フィ」.For “va”, enter either “va” or “vu+la” and 「ヴァ」will appear.
When you finish typing and press the space bar, some of the words can be changed into kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese).

かたOutline on affirmative and negative
The Japanese ‘Hai’ 「はい」 agrees with the idea expressed by the first speaker, as in English. But it is also used to show a friendly welcoming attitude to the speaker even when not agreeing with their opinion. Among adults ‘e`’ 「ええ」is often used in formal situation. Within the family and with friends, ‘un’「うん」is often used. When no agreeing with the other person’s opinion or refusing something ‘iie’ 「いいえ」 is used. Between friends ‘uun’「ううん」 has the same meaning.

ていOutline on conjugation of verb
In Japanese, not only the use of ‘hai’ and ‘un’ is decided by who you are speaking to, but also the end of the sentence changes according to the person spoken to. For example; when speaking to a teacher or an older person, at the end of the sentence the ‘masu’ 「ま す」form of the verb is used. When talking to a friend the dictionary form can be used. Using this and the past and negative form of verbs is a bit difficult, but let’s learn it little by little. For now, it is important just to know that the form of verbs changes.

ていOutline on conjugation of noun and adjective
When speaking to a teacher or an older person, adjectives and nouns are used with ‘desu’ 「です」. Speaking to a friend the adjective or noun stays the same as the dictionary form. There are two types of adjective in Japanese; I-adjective and NA-adjectives, we will study them later (p.85). Here let’s just have a look at nouns and the adjectives. 食た べる eat 読よ む read 動 どう 詞し の現げん 在 ざい ・未み 来らいの肯こう 定 てい 形 けい affirmative in the present and future 動 どう 詞し の現げん在ざい・未み 来 らい の否ひ 定てい形けい negative in the present and future
