(1)Vol. 45. No. 10. IPSJ Journal. Oct. 2004. Foreword. Special Issue: Selected Papers from ICMU 2004 Miki Yamamoto† Mobile computing aims at ubiquitous user access to computer application. To make it possible, networking technology which enables Internet access anytime and everywhere, i.e. ubiquitous networking is necessary. It is obvious that with the accelerating trends towards mobile networks, ad-hoc networks, and wireless networks, mobile computing and ubiquitous networking will play an important role in future network. In order to provide researchers and practitioners in this hot research area a forum for discussion and collaboration, IPSJ SIG-MBL (Special Interest Group of Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Networking) and SG-BCC (Study Group of Broadcast Communication and Computing) launched a new conference, ICMU (International Conference on Mobile Computing and Ubiquitous Networking) in 2004. This conference is also supported by SIG-ITS (Special Interest Group of Intelligent Transport Systems) and SIG-UBI (Ubiquitous Computing System). ICMU 2004 was successfully held at NTT DoCoMo R&D Center, Yokosuka, Japan on January 8 and 9. We offered 32 carefully reviewed technical papers. TPC of ICMU 2004 made a plan of this special issue and forms the Guest Editorial Committee. We selected finally 6 papers based on conference review results. The resubmitted journal papers were carefully reviewed under regular IPSJ review process. The accepted 6 papers cover various kinds of important issues for mobile computing and ubiquitous networking. We believe this. special issue will significantly benefit our future research. We are now planning ICMU 2005 which will be held in Osaka during April 13-15. For detailed information about ICMU 2005, please visit our web site (http://www.ipsj.or.jp/sig/ mbl/icmu2005/). See you in ICMU 2005.. The members of the Guest Editorial Committee are: • Editor-in-Chief Miki Yamamoto (Osaka University) • Editor Atsushi Inoue (Toshiba Corporation, R&D Center) Susumu Ishihara (Shizuoka University) Nobuo Kawaguchi (Nagoya University) Tadanori Mizuno (Shizuoka University) Akihiko Mizutani (IBM Japan) Masahiro Nishi (Hiroshima City University) Yuko Onoe (NTT DoCoMo) Osamu Takahashi (Future University-Hakodate) Masahiko Tsukamoto (Osaka University) Nagatsugu Yamanouchi (Toho University) Hidetoshi Yokota (KDDI R&D Laboratories). † Osaka University 2237.
