COMPARATIVE SURVEY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS  AND  THEIR MOTHERS  削 HONOLULU

S e x  r o l e means ，担 t h es i m p l e s t  t e r m s ,  t h e  a t t i t u d e s 叩 db e h a v i o r s   a s s o c i a t e d  w i t h  o n e  s e x  o r  t h e  o t h e r .   We h a v e  n e v e r  b e e n  i n f o r m e d  by  t h e  w o r l d  h i s t o r y  t h e  e x i s t e n c e  o f  s u c h  a  s o c i e t y  w i t h o u t  d i s t i n c t i o n s  b e ‑ t w e e n  mens  and womens  r o l e s .   The most b a s i c  d i v i s i o n  o f  l a b o r  h a s   b e e n  a s s u m e d  between men a n d  women.  And t h e  s o c i e t y  d e v e l o p e d   d i s t i n c t i v e   c o n c e p t s  on m a s c u l i m t y  a n d  f e r n m i n i t y  which r e f l e c t  what  d i f i 品 e r e n ts e x e s  a r e  s u p p o s e d  t o  d o  and how t h e y  a r e  s u p p o s e d  t o  b e h a v e   i n   t h e  s o c i e t y .  The t e r m ,  s e x  r o l e ,  m c l u d e s  b o t h  c o g m t i v e 叩 db e h a v i o r a l   a s p e c t s  c o n c e r 凶 ngm a l e ‑ f e m a l e  d i s t i n c t i o n s .

The r e s e a r c h e r  p a i d  s p e c i a l  a t t e n t i o n  t o  when t h e  r e s p o n d e n t sf a t m l i e s   i m m i g r a t e d  t o  H a w a i i .   As f o r  t h e   J a p a n e s e  s t u d e n t s ,  95% a r e  Hawau‑

b o r n :   81% h a v e  both H a w a i i ‑ b o r n  p a r e n t s  and 16% h a v e  one H a w a i i ‑ born p a r e n t   However, t h o s e  who h a v e  Hawaii born g r a n d p a r e n t s  a r e  l e 田

t h a n  h a l f   The J a p a n e s e  s t u d e n t s  whose t h r e e  o r  f o u r  g r a n d p a r e n t s  a r e  

H a w a i i ・ borna r e  o n l y  8%  and t h o s e  w i t h  o n l y  one o r  two H a w a i i ‑ b o r n  

g r a n d p a r e n t s  a r e  37% On t h e  o t h e r  h a n d ,  t h o s e  who have a l l  A s i a ‑ b o r n  

g r a n d p a r e n t s  a r e  52% These p e r c e n t a g e s  imply t h a t  p u r e   y o n s e i   ( f o u r t h  

g e n e r a t i o n )  J a p a n e s e  s t u d e n t s  a r e   q u i t e  a  few ( l e s s   t h a n  8%), t h a t  a p ‑

p r o x i m a t e l y  h a l f  of them a r e  p u r e   s a n s e i   ( t h i r d  g e n e r a t i o n ) ,  and t h a t  

most o f  t h e  r e s t  m e d i a t e  between  s a n s e i   . a n d   y o n s e i .   I n  c o n t r a s t  w i t h  t h e  

J a p a n e s e ,  t h e   m ^回世 g r a t i o nof t h e  C a u c a s i a n  f a m i l i e s  seems t o  be more 

r e c e n t  phenomenon  The H a w a i i ‑ b o r n  s t u d e n t s  a r e  o n l y  38 % and t h o s e  

who h a v e   a t   l e a s t   one H a w a i i ‑ b o r n  p a r e n t   a r e   24%. The r e s t   of t h e  

C a u c a s i a n  s t u d e n t  and t h e  p a r e n t s  were  a l l   born i n  US Mamland e x c l u d ‑

mg a  few e x c e p t 1 0 n a l  c a s e s .   Such c h a r a c t e r i s t 1 回 r e f l e c tt h e  f a c t s  i n  t h e  

p o p u l a t 1 0 n  c e n s u s e s  t h a t  s i n c e  1950 t h e  C a u c a s i a n  p o p u l a t i o n  h a s  r a p i d ‑

l y   i n c r e a s e d  and i t s   r a t i o  s u r p a 回 edt h a t  of t h e  J a p a n e s e ,  a l t h o u g h  t h e  

a b s o l u t e  p o p u l a t i o n  of t h e  J a p a n e s e  h a s  n o t  d e c r e a s e d  a t  a l l   The Ha 、 ^{w a i i ‑}

b o r n  r a t e   o f  t h e  s t u d e n t s  o f  o t h e r  o r  m i x e d  e t h m c 1 t i e s  a p p e a r s  l o w e r   t h a n  t h a t  o f  t h e  J a p a n e s e 恒 a v e r a g e( a r o u n d  70%), b e c a u s e  o f  t h e  r e l a ‑ t i v e l y  new i m m i g r a t i o n  o f  Fibpmos a n d  K o r e a n s .  

The e d u c a t i o n a l  s t a n d a r d s  o f  t h e  m o t h e r s  a r e  v e r y  h i g h ;   t h e  number  o f  t h o s e  who d i d  n o t  c o m p l e t e  h i g h  s c h o o l  e d u c a t i o n  i s   n e g l i g i b l e  a n d   t h e  u m v e r s 1 t y  (mcludmg g r a d u a t e  c o u r s e s )  g r a d u a t e s  o c c u p y  7 5   %  o f  t h e   C a u c a s i a n  m o t h e r s ,   39% o f  t h e   J a p a n e s e   m o t h e r s  a n d  47% o f  o t h e r   m o t h e r s .   The C a u c a s i a n   mother g r o u p  c o m p n s e s  mamly h o u s e w i v e s   ( 3 4 % ) ,   p r o 品目 i o n a l ,t e c h n i c a l  w o r k e r s  ( 3 1 % ) ,   a n d  s a l e s ,  c l e r i c a l   &  s e r v i c e   w o r k e r s  ( 2 4 % ) .   The o r d e r  c h a n g e s  w i t h  t h e  J a p a n e s e  m o t h e r  g r o u p  a s   s a l e s ,   c l e r i c a l   &  s e r v i c e   w o r k e r s  (49%), h o u s e w i v e s  (26%) a n d  p r o f e s ‑ s 1 0 n a l  t e c h m c a l  w o r k e r s  (18%)  As f o r  o t h e r  m o t h e r s ,  h o u s e w i v e s  a r e   32%,  s a l e s ,  c l e r i c a l   &  s e r v i c e  w o r k e r s 皿dp r o f e s s i o n a l  t e c h n i c a l  w o r k e r s   a r e  29% a n d  2 1  %,  r e s p e c t i v e l y .

The t r a i t s  a t t r i b u t e d  t o  m a s c u l i n i t y  by 40% ‑6 0  %  o f  t h e  r e s p o n d e n t s   a r e c o u r a g e o u s ， ＇ t o u g h ， ＂ h a v i n g  g o o d  l e a d e r s h i p "  a n d   a g g r e s s i v e   ， o n l y . T e n d e r a n d   s e n s i l ! v e a r e  s e l e c t e d  a s   f e m i n m e  t r a i t s  by 40% 

S u b m i s s i v e ， ＂ m o d e s t ， ＂ a f f e c t 1 0 n a t e a n d   c h e e r f u l a r e  l e s s  f a v o r e d   f o r   f e m i n i n i t y .   However ， m o d e s t ， ＇ humble ， a 飽 r e s s i v e ， ＇ s u bm i s   s 1 v e a n d   s e l f ‑ p o s s e s s e d a r e   a l s o   c o n s i d e r e d  a s   u n n e c e 田 町 yf o r  b o t h   men 四 dwomen by a r o u n d  40%. t h e  o t h e r  s e x a r e  r a t h e r  n e g a t i v e  a c c e p t a n c e  o f  t h e i r  own s e x .   Among

「性役割」とは，一方または他方の性に結びついた行動や態度を指す。

すなわち，男性または女性に独特の行動様式や役割を意味している。男 女の果す役割あるいは期待される役割に全く差のない社会は存在しない し，それどころか，社会的分業の最も基本的なものは。男女聞の分業であ る。だが，この性役割に関する考え方は社会によって，また同ヒ社会の 中でも時代によって違っている。現代社会においてはこの変化は，でき るだけ男女聞の差を少なくする方向にもって行こうというのが普ー遍的に なりつつある。男女が社会生活において果す役割分担に．このような変 化が起きるにつれて，男らしさ，女らしさという考え方にも当然変化が現 われてくることが期待される。

これは， 1 9 7 6 年に米国ハワイ州ホノルル市において行なわれた性役割 に関する意識調査を部分的にまとめたものである。

4 6 1 人の高校生（女子2 8 5 . 人，男子 1 7 6 人）と 3 4 2 人の母親から調査票を回 収することができた。これらの回答者を白人女子高校生，日系人女子高 校生，その他の女子高校生，白人男子高校生，日系人男子高校生，その 他の男子高校生，白人の母親，日系人の母親，その他の母親のグループ

に分けて分析した。

性役割に関する質問項目は，

1 .   2 輔自にわたる人間の性格を男性的，女性的又は中性的性格に ふりわける。

2 .母親達が重視する子供のしつけの基準の男女聞の違い。

3 . 社会における男女関係に関する 1 3 の意見に対する判断。

4 .女性にとっての結婚の意義。

5 . 男性であること，女性であることに対する総合的主評価。

の 5 種類である。

結論として，まず，母親達が次の世代よりも保守的考えをもっている わけではないこと，時には，かえってより進歩的態度を示したこと，全 体として，男女間にあまり差をおかない考え方が圧倒的であること，女 性の結婚に対しては否定的主考えはほとんどみられないこと，特に母親 達には自分遠の生き方に自信をもっている様子がみられること，ほとん どが自分の性に対して肯定的であること，グル プ別では白人，日系人，

その他の順で進歩的考えが支配的であることなどカ寝忍められた。
