Plato's Psychology and the Theory of Forms in the Republic TANAKA Shinji

The definition ofjustice in Book lV, 'becoming oneself onds own friend (,143d5),

is presented as an answer to the Glaucoris cha.llenge or the Thrasymachean argu- ment. This answer is called as 'a mere sketch (troyqa+rlv)' (504d6), i.e. the tdpartite dreory of the soul. In what sense is it'a mere sketcti? As a first step, it

can be understood as used in accordance with the difference in preciseness of argumentation between the discussion untit Book IV, which is based on the cor- respondence with the city, aid that of the so-called central Books, from Book V

to Book YII , which expounds the theory of Forms. Itr fact, the discussion on the correspondence with the city is pointed out as 'fell short of exactness' (504b5-6).

Howeve4 what does the difference in preciseness mean? For instance, is the above- mentioned definition ofjustice, 'becoming oneself one's own friend', understood better through the theory of Forms? Or, does tlre theory of Forms overwrite the discussion until Book IV and make it useless? Rethinking a link between the ac- count of the soul in Book IV and that in the cenhal Books, I answer these questions in the way that both of them are necessary in establishing a consnniiot Q)oliteia) in human being and a city, while they should be contrasted as a sketch and a fir-

We study the classical invariant theory of the B´ ezoutiant R(A, B) of a pair of binary forms A, B.. We also describe a ‘generic reduc- tion formula’ which recovers B from R(A, B)
