Problems of music appreciation education in general universities of China
――On the basis of a fi eld work――

Abstract
Music education is an important subject of quality education proposed in China now. A music appreciation class has been opened in most of general universities of China. Since the music education in general universities is still in an elementary stage, concrete problems, for instance, subject plan, teaching materials selection and gradation, in the spots of appreciation education, are seldom found out.
This investigation focuses on improving the music appreciation class in the general universities in China. We have observed and then analyzed the music appreciation class in two universities, i.e., Sichuan university and Yibin university, where we conduct a survey by a questionnaire with the cooperation of the undergraduates and interviewed the teachers of music appreciation education in March, 2006.
In questionnaire for undergraduates, we investigated the personal interest, current private ability in music, and desire, taste, demand for music class. We questioned the teachers about their opinions and demands on the guidance method, teaching materials, gradation method, guidance environment.
Furthermore, by analyzing the results of the investigation and considering the opinions from both sides of education, we investigate the ideal method of the music appreciation class, and pointed out the problems in teaching materials selection, guidance method, courses of the class, examination and environment.
Specially, for the teaching materials selection, there are seldom research related to tradition / folk music of a Chinese minority and music of various nationalities of the world. Therefore, we are going to focus our research on the teaching materials development in the future.
