father, Major Stephen Charters, gentleman farmer, live on their ancestral estate near the little town of Marchester. Their money has been dwindling, and now, they are in financial difficulties.
The family lawyer writes to a man named Carradine who owes Stephen Charters a large sum.
Carradine replies that he can’t pay his debt, but is sending his son Jim to Charters Manor to lend a hand. Rl>ea can’t see how this will help and is provoked, especially when she learns that Carradine^an adventurer and oil speculator, could have paid his debt in more prosperous times.
She expects the man’s son to be a crude person and, when Jim arrives, is surprised to find him attractive. However, she takes an antagonistic attitude toward him.
