安東正樹博士の研究業績概要
安東博士の専門分野は、重力波の探査実験である。一般相対論の予言の検証をめざし、 またコンパクト天体の物理学や、宇宙初期における時空の急激な膨張(インフレーショ ン)に迫るべく、同博士は超高精度のファブリ•ペロー型マイケルソン干渉計を開発し、 それを用いて、宇宙から到来する重力波を精力的に探査してきた。 安東博士の研究業績は、おもに時間順に以下の6点にまとめられる。 1. マイケルソン干渉計の感度を大幅に向上すべく、そこに用いるレーザービームに対 して、懸架ミラーを用いたパワーリサイクリングと呼ばれる技術を実証した(大学 院時代)。この技術はその後、世界の大型重力波望遠鏡にすべて取り込まれている。 2. 日本が世界に先駆け実現した重力波望遠鏡 TAMA300 計画(1995〜)では、その設計、 建設、運用、およびデータ取得に、50名を超すチームを主導しつつ、中心的な役割 を果たした(助手/助教時代)。さらにそのデータを用い、実際に天体から到来が期 待されるさまざまな重力波に対する上限値を得る研究でも、主導的な立場を演じた。 3. 宇宙空間から重力波の検出をめざす衛星計画DECIGOや、その前哨ミッションとなる小型衛星 DPF (DECIGO Path Finder) 計画を、主要メンバーの1人として推進して いる。またJAXAの技術実証衛星 SDS-1(2009年1月に相乗りで打ち上げ)には、少数 精鋭で実際に小型の重力波検出装置 Swimμνを搭載し、世界で始めて宇宙空間での重 力波検出器の安定な動作を実証した。 4. 助教時代から京大時代にかけ、1 Hz 以下の低周波の重力波に狙いを定めた、ねじれ 棒型重力波検出器 (TOBA) の開発を行い、将来への技術的見通しを高めた。また重 力の逆二乗法則からのずれの探査など、実験室レベルでの基礎実験も進めている。 5. 宇宙線研究所を中心に富山県飛騨市神岡で建造中の大型低温重力波望遠鏡「かぐら」 (LCGT)計画には、初期からその指導的メンバーの1人として大きく貢献している。 以上のように安東博士は、卓抜な実験技術、深い物理的洞察力、優れたリーダーシッ プを兼ね備え、主著論文の数も十分である。また日本の当該コミュニティを代表して多 くの国際招待講演を行い、諸外国の重力波探査プロジェクトの評価委員を務めるなど、 国際的なビジビリティもきわめて高い。 本研究科物理学専攻は、日本における重力波探査実験の発祥の地であり、「かぐら」 計画に対し、その心臓部となる干渉計の高度化作業とともに、人材育成の重責も担って いる。安東博士は、東大助教の時代に多くの大学院生の指導を補佐した実績をもち、そ の指導力には定評がある。同博士はまた、大型計画「かぐら」、将来を見据えた衛星計 画、少人数で行える実験室実験など、多方向の研究を展開していることから、幅広い教 育を行うことができると期待される。 以上により安東博士は、本研究科物理学専攻の准教授にふさわしい人材であると結論 される。
