Objective and organization of the thesis

The thesis objective is to understand the current situation of entrepreneurship education in the case of Malaysia. Entrepreneurship education has been identified as the key competence for all citizens particularly in helping young people to be more creative and self-confident in whatever they undertake and to act in a socially responsible way (European Commission, 2006).

The overall research objective is to critically assess the current entrepreneurship education system in Malaysia at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. P olicies that are relevant for the study and entrepreneurship development in Malaysia are explained, their objectives critically analyzed and an overall assessment of the effectiveness and efficiency of the policies is made.

The specific research objectives are, (1) to make an assessment of the current implementation status of entrepreneurship education in Malaysia from the perspective of Malaysian educators and government officials at primary or elementary level, secondary level and tertiary level, and (2) to examine the impact of entrepreneurship education in local university by comparing the entrepreneurial characteristics and self-efficacy skills of two students groups; students who are exposed to entrepreneurship through formal education and students who are not exposed to entrepreneurship through formal education. The research questions formed are efforts made to answer the three research objectives. A mix of qualitative and quantitative methods design is used. The first specific research question that cope with Malaysian public policy in regards to entrepreneurial education was examined using qualitative approach. The author proceeded to interviews of educators at the three levels mentioned before. Then, she also interviewed public officials in charge of entrepreneurial programs. The second specific research question was analyzed using quantitative approach. The author used a sample of two populations in order to verify her hypothesis.

Assessment of the thesis

- The first comment was related to the title of the thesis: there is a discrepancy between the

broad approach suggested by the title and the narrow approach of the thesis content. So, the

author is asked to reconsider it.

- The literature survey is quite comprehensive and covers well the key elements of entrepreneurship. However, it should be updated because there are few references after 2012.

Moreover, the literature survey must reflect a sound grasp of the theoretical strands and a well-argued critical perspective on the material under study. However, the author does not present a clear account of the conceptual approach to critique. A more reflexive perspective on her work is necessary.

- The thesis should provide a good balance between a critique of assumptions about entrepreneurship education in current entrepreneurship research, and a detailed empirical investigation of the status of entrepreneurship education around the world (Europe, Asia, Asean and Malaysia). It also needs to discuss and debates about how entrepreneurship education can develop entrepreneurial competencies among the students thus improve their graduate employability and entrepreneurial intention.

- In the qualitative survey, there is not enough indication of the relevance of the sampling of respondents. It is necessary to have more information about their level and possibly about the function they have in the programs in the case of the interviewed respondents.

- Though important elements have been included in the chapter on methodology, the way of presentation need to be improved. For example, triangulation section is not being thoroughly discussed and developed since it was the strength of this thesis.

Furthermore, comments have been made on the justification of the sample use in the quantitative analysis. It seems obvious that differences in key dimensions of entrepreneurial drive as expressed in the self-efficacy questionnaire is observed between those who have had an exposure to entrepreneurial courses and those who do not. The author responded to the comment in telling that all students are exposed for one semester to entrepreneurial education. Moreover, the curriculum is standardized and the same textbook is utilized in all schools.

- It is observed that the thesis is written in a clear and straightforward manner. There is methodical and smooth development flows in thinking and writing processes at each succeeding stage of the thesis. Discussion and critical review are orderly and coherent.

- The thesis is one of the first attempts to make field research on this issue in Malaysia.

Therefore, it has an exploratory characteristic. Nevertheless, despite the shortcomings of the analysis and the relative weakness of the sampling it covers a gap in the literature. In this sense, it contributes to the understanding of the topic and open new perspectives of research.

Evaluation of the thesis

(6)

After the final examination the three examiners considered the thesis acceptable to be awarded a PhD degree subjected to minor corrections:

- re-writing and restructuring of the introduction and literature review chapters that includes a coverage of entrepreneurial education in the world

- up-dating of with the current data and literature reviews - better utilization of the triangulation section

- proof-reading by an English native speaker

These minor corrections have been appropriately undertaken and the revised text satisfy the criteria of

acceptability for a PhD thesis without reserve.
