本 書 は 、鹿 児 島 大 学 多 島 圏 研 究 セ ン ター に よ る2002-2004年 度 調 査 研 究 プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト「多 島 域 に お け る 小島嶼 の 自律 性 ∼ 与 論 を 中 心 と した 薩 南 諸 島 で の 学 際 的研 究 ∼ 」 の 研 究 成 果 報 告 書 で あ る 。本 研 究 は 、1999年 度 の ミ ク ロ ネ シ ア ヤ ップ 本 島及 び 日本 南 部島嶼 域 を 対 象 とす る 多 島域 に お け る小島嶼 自律 性 研 究 プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト(本報 告 書 シ リー ズNo.34)、 英 書 ・和 書 双 方 か らな る 『薩 南 諸 島 一21世 紀 へ 挑 戦 一』2001年3月 、 並 び に2000-2001年 度 の ミク ロネ シ ア ヤ ップ 本 島 及 び ウル シィ 環 礁 を 対 象 とす る 多 島域 に お け る小島嶼 自律 性 研 究 プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト(本報 告 書 シ リー ズNo.39)に 引 き 続 き 、 そ の継 続 性 を 確 保 しつ つ 行 われ た 研 究 プ ロ ジ ェ ク トの 成 果 で あ る 。 本 研 究 プ ロジ ェ ク トは 、鹿 児 島 県 内 の 代 表 的 離 島 で あ る 薩 南 諸 島 を対 象 と して 、 離 島 の 自然 ・文 化 ・社 会 の 特 性 を 明 らか に し、 そ の 特 性 を活 か した 自律 的 発 展 を可 能 とす る方 策 を 視 座 に 据 え た 、総 合 的 研 究 プ ロジ ェ ク トで あ る。そ の 学 際 研 究 の 目的 を達 成 す るた め に 、 環 境 ・医 療 ・社 会 ・農 業 ・水 産 業 の5分 野 を構 成 し、 そ れ ぞ れ の 分 野 内 で の調 整 と意 見 交 換 を経 る と共 に 、学 内 で 全 員 参 加 の 下 で の 成 果 発 表 会 を2003年6月6日 と、2004年6月5 日に 開催 して 、他 分 野 の 理 解 も深 め た 。そ れ ら積 み 上 げ の 成 果 で あ る と共 に 、現 地(一 部 奄 美 大 島)で の 意 見 交 換 を活 発 に 行 い 、途 中成 果 等 の発 表 を公 開講 座 方 式 ・シ ン ポ ジ ウム 方 式 で 、 延 べ16回27名 も行 っ た もの で あ り、 現 地 需 要 に 対 応 しか つ 現 地 批 判 に耐 え られ る成 果 物 と した 。 ま た 、 薩 南 諸 島 研 究 の 知 的 イ ン フ ラ を構 築 す べ く薩 南 諸 島 関 連 文 献 リス ト等 を 電 子 化 し 、 ウ ェ ッブ 上 で 一 般 公 開 した(http://database.kuas.kagoshima-u.ac.jp :591/)。 更 な る統 合 的 ・総 括 的 手 法 に よ る学 際 研 究 に 工 夫 の 余 地 を残 しつ つ も 、一 小島嶼 に 集 約 した 多 分 野 か らな る 学 際成 果 と蓄 積 基 礎 を残 した と 自負 す る も の で あ る。 こ の 薩 南 諸 島 最 南 端 小島嶼 で の 成 果 を起 点 と して 、 「道 の 島 々」 とい われ る 、 南 北600キ ロ に わ た る鹿 児 島島嶼 域 の 島 々 との 比 較 研 究 や 、 海 外 小島嶼 多 島域 との 比 較 研 究 へ の展 開 が 期 待 さ れ る と こ ろ で あ る。 2005年3月1日 多 島 圏 研 究 セ ン ター プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト部 会 部 会 長 塚 原 潤 三 同 部 会 担 当 セ ン タ ー 員 長 嶋 俊 介

This volume of occasional papers number 42 in the series, is a report of the 2002-2004 research project entitled "Social Homeostasis of Small Islands in an Island-zone: Interdisciplinary Approach to Satsunan Islands Focussing on Yoron Island". This research project was conducted in order to give a continuity of the studies of the 1999 research project "Social Homeostasis of Small Islands in an Island-zone: Yap Proper, Micronesia and Islands in Southern Japan" (Occasional Papers No.4),

"BEYOND SATSUMA— _{Sutsunan Islands- Challenge to the 21st Century --", March 2001, and the} 2000-2001 research project "Social Homeostasis of Small Islands in an Island-zone: Yap Proper, Micronesia and Ulithi Atoll" (Occasional Papers No.9). This research project targets a typical isolated island in the Kagoshima prefecture, the Satsunan islands. The overall research project focuses from the viewpoint of self-directive development that makes the best use of its characteristic of the nature, culture, and the society; being an isolated island.

To make this interdisciplinary research possible, 5 field surveys were organized - environmental field, medical field, social science field, agriculture field, and fisheries and marine field, and the interaction among each field was studied. In 6th June 2003 and in 5th June 2004, opportunities were set up to report the results of our studies under the participation of all members at university, which helped us to deepen the understanding of other fields. This research is a result of these studies. Opinion exchanges in Yoron Island (a part of it was done in Amami Oshima Island) were actively done. There were 27 persons who presented the interim results for a total of 16 times in open lectures and in the symposium. The presentations allowed the active participation of the islanders to make criticisms of the existing island conditions. Furthermore, to develop the intellectual infrastructure of Satsunan Islands studies, the list of related documents are opened to the public and can be made accessible through the web (http ://database. kuas. kagoshima-u. ac. jp :591/).

There may be still a room for further improvement of an integrated, comprehensive method on interdisciplinary research. But we take pride in our results achieved in this integrated research field of various academic disciplines; in such that it serves as an accumulated base for the study on one small island. These results are a start. We expect that this study does not end in this small island; which lies in the south end of Satsunan Islands, but to further make comparative studies with other small islands in Kagoshima that lies over south north 600km, known as "the road of islands" or other small island-zone abroad.
