(Urayasu City Hall 3F)
In East Asian cultures, February 4 is the beginning of spring. When I walk around
town, I can feel the first signs of spring when I see plum trees and Kawazu cherry trees
starting to blossom.
The theme of this column is “a stroll,” and Urayasu, being a place built on flat
re-claimed land on the Edogawa River Delta, is a great place for walking. Whenever I have
time, I like to walk around the city, and even on routes that I usually take, I can discover
playful touches on the road that entertain the people walking.
In the Shinmachi area, Chiba Prefecture and the Japan Housing Corporation (currently
the Urban Renaissance Agency) have been carrying out planned development, but under
the first basic plan in 1978, most of the residential areas were zoned for single homes.
Due to changing times, the focus shifted to apartments—like it is now—and the road
construction plan was also drastically reviewed.
However, the idea of “walking around town” was kept, and boardwalks and green
ar-eas—such as Symbol Road—were constructed as planned.
There is a boardwalk called Green
Area No. 83—starting from the Bay
City Urayasu Local Residents’
Associa-tion Meeting Place and circling Hinode
Elementary School—which has various
monuments installed along it. Since the
area is close to elementary schools and kindergartens, there are monuments of baseball
bats, balls and gloves that represent the laughter of children. Other monuments include
straw hats and tools for clamming, since the area lies close to the sea.
There are many boardwalks and green areas in Urayasu, and there are many playful
touches lined along them that make it more fun to walk. Hopefully, you will also stroll
around town to discover these touches.
I believe that if more people enjoy walking around town, Urayasu will become an
even more bustling city, full of vitality.
