A NOTE ON CONVEX FUNCTIONS

Abstract.In this paper, we give two weak conditions for a lower semi-continuous function on then-dimensional Euclidean spaceRnto be a convex function. We also present some results for convex functions, strictly convex functions, and quasi-convex functions.

Recall that, by definition, an extended-real-valued functionfdefined on a setS⊂E is to be lower semi-continuous at a pointx∈S if, for each λ∈R1,λ < f (x), there exists a neighborhoodU ofx such thatf (y) > λfor ally∈U.f:S→[−∞,+∞]is said to be lower semi-continuous iffis lower semi-continuous at each point ofS.

This paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we review some basic results for convex functions and lower semi-continuous functions. Section 3 gives two weak con- ditions for a lower semi-continuous function to be a convex function and presents a

result which provides an important connection between convex functions and strictly convex functions. Some properties of quasi-convex functions, strongly quasi-convex functions, and strictly quasi-convex functions are investigated in Section 4. The con- cept of convexity is important for quantitative and qualitative studies in mathematical programming involving convex functions. Our results are motivated by Yang [4, 5].

2. Preliminaries. First, we recall the following two properties which characterize lower semi-continuous functions (see Tiel [3]).

Theorem2.1. LetS⊂E. A functionf:S→[−∞,+∞]is lower semi-continuous if and only if, for every real numberλ, the set{x∈S:f (x)≤λ}is closed.

Theorem2.2. LetS⊂E. A functionf:S→[−∞,+∞]is lower semi-continuous if and only if its epigraphepi(f )= {(x,λ)∈S×R1:f (x)≤λ}is closed (as a subset of S×R1).

We recall the following:

3. Convex functions. This section gives some properties on convex functions and strictly convex functions. Our results greatly simplify the criteria on convex functions and strictly convex functions.

By using Theorems 2.2 and 2.3, one can prove the following two results which give weak conditions for a lower semi-continuous function to be a convex function.

Time-Dependent Billiards

Call for Papers

This subject has been extensively studied in the past years for one-, two-, and three-dimensional space. Additionally, such dynamical systems can exhibit a very important and still unexplained phenomenon, called as the Fermi acceleration phenomenon. Basically, the phenomenon of Fermi accelera- tion (FA) is a process in which a classical particle can acquire unbounded energy from collisions with a heavy moving wall.

This phenomenon was originally proposed by Enrico Fermi in 1949 as a possible explanation of the origin of the large energies of the cosmic particles. His original model was then modified and considered under different approaches and using many versions. Moreover, applications of FA have been of a large broad interest in many different fields of science including plasma physics, astrophysics, atomic physics, optics, and time-dependent billiard problems and they are useful for controlling chaos in Engineering and dynamical systems exhibiting chaos (both conservative and dissipative chaos).

We intend to publish in this special issue papers reporting research on time-dependent billiards. The topic includes both conservative and dissipative dynamics. Papers dis- cussing dynamical properties, statistical and mathematical results, stability investigation of the phase space structure, the phenomenon of Fermi acceleration, conditions for having suppression of Fermi acceleration, and computational and numerical methods for exploring these structures and applications are welcome.

To be acceptable for publication in the special issue of Mathematical Problems in Engineering, papers must make significant, original, and correct contributions to one or more of the topics above mentioned. Mathematical papers regarding the topics above are also welcome.
