S: Yokosuka English Information. This show is for conveying upcoming events in Yokosuka, or other information related to daily life, to foreign residents in the area.

T: Hello everyone, this is Tomi.

S: And this is Daniel. Welcome to Yokosuka English Information for the week of September 12th.

T: Welcome.

S: So what’s going on this week?

T: Well this time, it not just about what’s going on this week, but also next week.

S: You talking about the holidays coming up?

T: Yes! There are 2 holidays next week, so a lot of people should have off on those days.

S: Yeah! I’m looking forward to it.

T: So I thought that for this week, maybe we can talk a little bit about the holidays, along with events going on through this week and the next, so people can plan out how to spend their days off too.

S: Sounds good! So the holidays next week are on Monday and Thursday… so that’ll be the 19th and the 22nd.

T: Yes, so the first holiday on Monday of next week is 敬老の日. S: Which is known as “Respect for the Aged Day.”

T: Yeah, so this name should be pretty self-explanatory.

S: Yeah - so I assume people show respect to elderly citizens on this day?

T: Yes, that’s right. Although of course we should always respect our elders.

S: Yeah, every day should be respect-the-elders day, but next week Monday will be the official day for it.

T: Yes. And then on Thursday, is 秋分の日. S: Which is known as “Autumn Equinox Day.”

T: Yes. And this basically means the start of the fall season.

S: Yes, so the start of the fall, maybe my favorite season. So a lot of people will also have off on these days.

T: Yes, so 2 holidays next week.

S: Nice. So for people who didn’t know, now’s a good time to start planning for your extra days off!

S: And so for people who have off on the 22nd, there’s actually an event happening specifically on that day.

T: What is it?

S: It’s the Red Spider Lily Festival.

T: Nice. So a festival for the red spider lilies that should be in full bloom. Where is that at?

S: Yeah, the festival will be going on at theMamonzan Navy Cemetery.

T: Oh nice, yeah that’s actually a really beautiful looking place.

S: Yeah we might be scaring some people off at first by saying they should go check out a cemetery, but it’s actually a real nice spot. Well-known too, as it’s been around since the late 1800s.

T: Yeah every year they usually have a festival around the cherry blossom season too.

S: Yeah, so it’s really well-kept. This time around, they are having their Red Spider Lily Festival. It’ll be a free event for anyone to attend, and people who attend will actually get a free drink too.

T: A free drink?

S: Yes - attendees will receive a free drink of Amazake, which is a kind of sweet, traditional Japanese drink.

(4)

4

T: Oh, amazake!

S: Yeah, there’s not really any translation for it. I guess it would literally be sweet sake. But it’s not necessarily always alcoholic. Do you like amazake?

T: Yes, I like non- alcoholic Amazake. Amazake is made of rice and I like smell of it.

S: I had amazake for the first time at a festival this past year, and it was so good. I was kinda surprised how much I liked it. It’s a drink made from fermented rice, and it has a sweet flavor to it. It’s really good!

T: Nice! So maybe some of our listeners can try some if they haven’t already, at the festival next week.

S: Yeah.

T: What else is going on at the festival?

S: Well, if there’s any photographers out there, there’s actually going to be a photo contest there too.

T: That’s interesting - should make for some good photos with all the spider lilies.

S: Yeah for sure.

T: So what’s the best way for listeners to get to Mamonzan Navy Cemetery?

S: The best way to get there will be on the Keikyu line train. People will get off the train at Keikyu Kita-Kurihama Station.

(5)

5

T: Do you know how far the cemetery is away from Kita-Kurihama Station?

S: From there, the cemetery grounds are maybe about a 7 minute walk north of the station.

T: Sounds good. So once again, that’s the Red Spider Lily Festival. S: Yes, and the cemetery opens around 8:30, but the festival will start at

around 10am, so I’d recommend getting there in the morning for everything.

S: And then we also have the exhibits from last week, from the Yokosuka Museum of Art, that are still going on.

T: Yes, and what are the exhibits again, for people listening who may have missed the show last week?

S: That will be the exhibit focusing on the depiction of women from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, as well as the gallery of Yuko Kawada, which displays the minute, fine, microscopic details of nature in a large scale.

T: Cool.

S: There’s usually always a few exhibits running at the same time, so you can check out different kinds of art whenever you go.

(6)

6

T: Yeah, and if you go for the featured exhibit, you can see all the other exhibits too under the same ticket price.

S: Yes, that’s true.

S: Anything else to mention before we wrap up the show?

T: Yes, there’s actually one last thing. At Soleil no Oka Nagai Seaside Park.

S: Cool, what’s going on?

T: Next week, on Monday, which is a holiday, they’re having an open market, with lots of things for sale.

S: Nice. So a sale going on for people wanting to check out some unique things in Japan.

T: The open market will run from 9am to 5pm, if anyone is interested.

S: Sounds good.
