沖縄県の中部と南部の接点に位置する本市は、
かつて、琉球王国・察度王の時代、琉球の根（ねた
て）と呼ばれ、政治・経済・文化の中心でした。今日、
コンベンションセンターを中核として、人・物・情報
が国際的な次元で出入りする私たちの都市(まち)・
宜野湾は、今なお沖縄県の中核的役割を担う都市
として発展しており、まさに現代の「ねたて」であると
言えます。
地方分権時代において、基礎的自治体（市町村）
の役割は、地域の総合行政として教育、福祉、市民
生活、環境などのきめ細やかな行政サービスの向
上を目指し、自立的に担っていくことが求められてい
ます。本市では、市政運営の基本に「市政の主人公
は市民」を明確に据え、市民と行政の協働によるま
ちづくりに取り組んでまいります。
市勢要覧は、まちづくりの取り組みや歴史・文化、
イベント情報などをとおして宜野湾市の姿を紹介し
ています。多くの皆さまに活用され、お役に立つこと
ができれば幸いです。

行政は、市長部局、教育委員会、水道局、消防本部、各種委員会等で構成され、市民
からの行政に対する需要に応えるため、
「行政の主人公は市民」を基本とした行政運営に、
市長を中心に職員が一丸となり努めています。
市長、副市長、各部長による庁議を開き、将来に向けた各種事業計画や各事業の進捗
状況などを話し合い、行政を進めています。
Ginowan is located at the juncture between the central and southern areas of Okinawa Prefecture, and in the time of King Satto during the Kingdom of Ryukyu, the city was the center for politics, economy and culture, when it was known as the root ( netate ) of Ryukyu. Today, Ginowan continues to develop as an international city based around the Convention Center, with a lively flow of people, goods and information. As a city that plays a core role in Okinawa, it can still be said to be the recent netate or root of Okinawa.
In the age of decentralization of authority, the fundamental role of municipal government is to provide comprehensive and fine-grained administrative services related to education, welfare, civic life, the environment and the like, with independent authority. The municipal administration of Ginowan is committed to citizen-led community development, founded on a partnership between the public and the local government.
