Endo
wroteKiiroi-hito
(Ybllow

between
theWestern
Christianity
and
Japanese
mentality. The conflict or thealternative
had
been
along
time obsession ofhis.
In
his
novel thetitlecan be used as a symbolwhich accepts equally any
dead
personwhat-ever religion he belonged to
in
thisworld,how-ever poor
he
was andhowever
sinful he used tobe.
Italso symbolizes the eternalbeing,
thatis,
God
oflove,
though itdoes not necessarilymean only
Christ,
the
God
of WesternChris-tianity.
Owing
tothe effect of multiplemean-ings
of the wordsthat
EndO
set everywhere,thisnovel addresses toreaders'
hearts
onvari-ous
levels.
What isthe main theme of thisnovel, which
lines
up all the characters andthemes thatEndO depicted inthe pastnovels?
I
think thatis
the very same question raisedin
Sitence
and thathasbeen
kept asking aboutin
his whole works since:How
is
anon-Western, universal or in itsliteralmeaning,
catholic Christianity possible? Isit
successful-ly
done?
A

Otsu

Also
he
says thatJesus

EndO's
positionis
based
on religiousplural-ism, In other words, the novel Deep River is
Endo's
manifesto of religious pluralism.End6 inan interview
(Ibid.)
said, "While Iwas
young,
I
thought monotheism was opposed topantheismiO). But now Ithink the former
in-cludes the latter."What does this mean? How
should we
interpret
hiswords?Certainly
End6
means by these words that
in
its
historyChris-tianityaccepted local
divinities
as itwasmis-sioned,
EndO
says, `'The statue ofMary
theHoly
Motherin
Cathedral
ofChartre,
forexam-ple,
is
the
local
Great
Mother.
Catholic
admira-tion
for
Maryis
based on the great mother."
EndO's
statement can at the same time beinterpreted to mean that an Extreme divine
being
exists a prioritoeach religious divinity. And in doing so EndO solved the alternative
question: monotheism or pantheisrn.

in-stead of ressurection isheld. Here isan
argu-ment which completely surpasses the
Christian
boundary.
Goddes
Chamunda
appears againand again and sometimes
it
is
compared withMary the Holy Mother.
Charnunda,
the motherof
India,
is
the goddess who suffers withInd-iansand endures every kind of ageny.
She
is,
unlike
Mary
theHoly
Mother,
neither pure norgraceful. On the contrary, she isugly and even
soiled.
And
yet she triesto giveher
dried
upbreasts to hungry children,
Mitsuko
blames
Otsu
for
struggling athis
useless work
but,
in her heart, isimpressed.
Will
she sooner orlater
be
converted?She
prays before the deep river saying, "It
isonly
thisscene of people with each pain on
his
back
praying by the river thatI can believe. And
thatthe river
flows
accepting those people.It
isthe river of humanity. The deep river of
human
sorrows."Into
the river she goes tobathe and to pray fersomething greater.
Ac-cording to
Hinduism,
bathing
in
theGanges
promises pardon and re-birth as a new being.
Into
thebosom
of a greaterbeing,
muchgreat-er than Otsu's Onion. Clearly her convertion
and salvation
is
fortold.
To
a nun of "Missionary ofCharity"
she asks,"Why
are you doing this?" Then surprise
ap-pears
in
nun's eyes and slowly she replies,"Be-cause, except
for
this,..thereis
nothingin
thisworld we can believe in." To Mitsuko itwas
net clear.
She
can not make out what the nunsays.
If
the nun says, "Onlyhim",
then shemeans Otsu's Onion. Here would be no
signifi-cant
difference,
whether we take the ultimatebeing as personal 'hirn'
or impersonal `itl Only
the author with
Otsu
secretly confessesit
theOnion. the other name of Christ.
5.
IsDeep River successful?-It isa verydangerous
book
from
a point of view oftradi-tional Christianity. It can not be compared
withSilence.
It
is
his
interpretaion
ofJudas,
It
iswithin the
framework
ofChristianity.
Sinceitcontains argument of tacitadmission of
apo-stasy, something
like
ernergency evacuation,for
practice of ultimate value,Love
(or
pity,compassion), Church in
Japan
which had notbeen
Iong after Vatican Council II,consideredit
dangerous.
Apart
from
a rigoristic pastoral standpoint,it
did
not necessarily deny the original ideaonlove
in
Christianity.
This
novel,however,
con-tainsan apology forpantheism.
Otsu
says, "InChristianty
just
asin
Buddhism
and Hinduismexists thesame
divinity."
This isthe argumentin which salvation ispossible
in
other thanChrist's
name.Certainly
the Roman CatholicChurch admits the equal
qualification
in
reli-gions other than Catholic and promotes posi-tivedialogue between other religions and
Cath-olics.
But
it
is
only within limits.Catholic orthodoxy can not get around
Karl
Rahner's
inclusivism.ii)
Since
Vatican CouncilIIthe
Church
has changed sofar
as toencour-age positive
dialogues
between variousreli-gions, But ithas not given up Christ'sname.
Because
asFr.
Shunichi
Takayanagi
warns, ifitwere to give up
Christ's
name and step inreligious pluralism,
it
"will have to lose itsfundarnental ground and run at random."i2)
In
that sense, thisEndO's novel inwhich theauthor successfuHy turns the Western Chris-tianity
into
Christianity
for
Japanese
{or
onefor
global human beings)isnothing but failure. The reason
is
simple, thereis
noChrist's
name.But
on the other hand, there may be anotherstandpoint which
is
different
from
that oftra-ditional
Christianity.
Namelyit
is
aChristian
standpeint
but
the object of one'sbelief
is
netnecessarily the traditional
Christ.
Becausehis-torically the anonymous Nazarene
did
notinsist
onhis
name. Before the establishment ofKerygma, the name of
Christ
did
not matterbut
the practice ofChrist's
love. Therefore ifwe were to take the stand on the point of view
of religious pluralism
in
which aChristian
canfeelthesame reality of the ultimate being even
in
the rites ofHinduism
andBuddhism,
thenwe would
find
