今年度は、9月と1月に国際交流サロンの開催を計画しておりましたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症 の感染拡大防止の観点から、イベント開催は中止とさせていただきました。
今回は、Let’s Join Hands 特別号を発行し、紙面にて国際交流サロンを開催します。
岐阜県国際交流課のピーター・コリンズさん（イギリス出身）と、ジヴィレ・ヨマンタイテさん（リトアニア 出身）のご協力を得て、出身国の紹介を行います。 みなさん、こんにちは！ ピーターです。岐阜市に住んでいる26歳のイギリス人です。 高校の時、日本語を勉強し始めてから、日本に興味を持ち、大学 生のとき、ドイツに留学し、国際交流に興味をもつようになりました。 大学を卒業したら日本で働きたいという思いから、JETプログラム に応募し来日しました。現在は日本に住んで5年になります。 イギリスは、四つの国（イングランド、スコットランド、ウェル ズと北アイルランド）でできている島国です。イギリスと言え ば、バッキンガム宮殿などロンドンの街並みやハリー・ポッ ターなどのキャラクターが有名だと思いますが、ここでは、 あまり知られていない私の故郷を紹介したいと思います。 私の故郷は、スタワーブリッジと言い、イングランドの真ん 中にある「黒い国」と呼ばれている地域にあります。 19世紀の産業革命の中心地で、産業が栄えていた場所です。工場からの煙などで空が黒くなっていた ということで、「黒い国」と名付けられましたが、今は産業が少なくなっていて、空が普通に青くてきれいで す。 イギリス地図 ウェルズ スコット ランド スタワーブリッジ ● ピーター・コリンズさん
昔のスタワーブリッジは、ガラス品の生産地として有名で、近くには、バーミンガムという、人口で言えば イギリスで第2の都市があります。18世紀までは小さな村でしたが、産業革命の時代に鉄道ができてから 交通の要衝となり、急速に発展してきました。現在は名古屋と同じくらい都会です。 もうすぐ12月になりますが、イギリスではクリスマス時期の準備がもう進んでいると思います。クリスマスは、 イギリスの祝日の中で、もっとも大事なものです。12月1日から、多くの家庭がクリスマス・ツリーなどで家の 室内を飾り、地域によっては家の外にイルミネーションなどをつける家庭も多いです。ラジオや店では、定 番のクリスマス音楽が流れ始めて、どこに行ってもクリスマスの雰囲気があります。 日本の年賀状に近いもので、クリスマスのグリーティングカードを親戚や友達に送る人も多いです。恋 人や家族など、特に親しい人とは、12月25日が到達するまで開いてはいけないクリスマス・プレゼントを交 換します。子供は、アドベントの期間（12月1日から25日までの期間）中に、クリスマスまでの日数を数える ため、1日ごとに１つ窓があるアドベントカレンダーというものを持ち、毎日カレンダーの窓を１つ開き、その 中に入っているチョコレートを食べる習慣があります。 12月25日は、家族が集まる日です。家庭によってスケジュー ルが異なりますが、朝になると、夜にサンタクロースがクリスマス ツリーの下に置いてくれたプレゼントを開けるのが伝統的です。 午後には、クリスマス・ディナーを準備して食べます。（ディナーと 呼ばれていますが、2～3時のランチに近い時間に食べている家 庭が多いです。）七面鳥の料理を食べるイメージが強いですが、 イギリスでは伝統としてガチョウやアヒルの料理を食べる人も多い です。（実は、七面鳥はアメリカから輸入したもので、昔ながらの 料理といえばガチョウやアヒルのイメージのほうが近いです） また、クリスマスのデザートは、日本と全く違 い、クリームケーキなどは食べません。「クリスマス・プリン」という伝統的なデザートがありますが、日本みた いにクリームとイチゴがいっぱい入っているものではなく、ドライフルーツやナッツがいっぱいで、ブラン デー・カスタードがかけられた味が濃いデザートです。 イギリスのクリスマスは1日の祝日だけではないです。12月25日 がクリスマスの最初の日で一番大事な日となりますが、クリスマス の期間は1月6日まで続き、クリスマスが完全に終わるまで飾りな どをそのままにしている人も多いです。バーミンガムには、イギリ ス最大級のドイツ風クリスマス・マーケットがあり、その期間中にホ ットワインを飲みながら、クリスマスのお菓子を食べて風景を楽し みます。 教会の行事に通ってキリスト教の祝日としてクリスマス を祝う方も多いですが、クリスマス飾りを家につけるイスラム教やヒンズーの家庭も少なくはないですし、現 代のクリスマスは宗教・文化背景と関係なく、誰でも祝えるクリスマスとなっています。 皆様もよいクリスマスをお過ごしください！ メリー・クリスマス！ 代表的なクリスマスディナー クリスマスツリーイベントを 開催するウスター大聖堂

Hello everybody!
My name is Peter and I am from the United Kingdom. From the time I started to study Japanese language as a sixth form (a British term for Senior High School) student, I was very interested in Japan. As a
university I had the opportunity to study in Germany as an exchange student, which made me want to be involved further in international exchange activities. After graduating university, I wanted to try working in Japan and so applied to participate in the JET Programme.
The UK is an island country, made up of four different countries: England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. Many people may think of tourist sites in London such as Buckingham Palace, or famous characters such as James Bond or Harry Potter. Today, I would like to introduce the region which I am from which is not so well known in Japan.
My hometown is called Stourbridge, and it is located in a region in the centre of England known as the “Black Country”.
During the 19thcentury, the area was one of the main centres
in the UK’s industrial revolution and the smoke and smog from the many factories was said to have turned the sky black, resulting in the name “black country”. Nowadays, there is not
so much industry and the sky has returned to a normal blue. Stourbridge was famous in particular for glassware items (production continues to this day as souvenirs or art pieces) and is located close to the UK’s second biggest city in terms of population, Birmingham. Until the 18thcentury, Birmingham was only
a small village, but became a major centre of both various industries and public transport following the development of the railways during the industrial revolution and today is a similar size to Nagoya.
As we approach December and the end of the year, the United Kingdom prepares for the Christmas period, perhaps the single most significant holiday period of the year. From December 1st, many
families will decorate their houses for Christmas, setting up Christmas trees inside their houses and people in many areas will decorate the outside with lights and other decorations. Like Japan, Christmas music becomes very popular in shops and on the radio; it is impossible to escape the Christmas atmosphere.
Ahead of Christmas day, people will send Christmas cards to their friends and family (a similar tradition to nengajo in Japan), as well as exchanging presents (to be placed under the tree and opened upon Christmas day) with those closest to them such as lovers or family. Children will have advent calendars to open in the period from December 1stuntil the 25th, opening a single door (behind which is a
chocolate surprise) each day as they wait for Christmas.

When Christmas day (December 25th) finally arrives, it is a time for family to come together. Typically
presents will be exchanged and opened in the morning (left by Santa for children) and then Christmas dinner will be prepared. (Incidentally, despite being referred to as “dinner”, the meal is most often eaten in the early afternoon, with many households eating it around 2-3PM.) Turkey is well known as a
Christmas dinner food, but other poultry such as ducks or geese are also popular and traditional in the UK. (Actually, turkeys are not native to Europe and so are a relatively recently addition to Christmas tradition.)
Christmas desserts are very different to the cream and strawberry based cakes famous in Japan. Typically a dessert known as “Christmas pudding” is eaten, which is a dense and rich fruit cake stuffed with dried fruit such as dates.
The festival of Christmas is not only a single day; decorations remain up through the New Years period until January 6th. Over the Christmas period, many people enjoy European style outdoor Christmas
markets (the largest one in the UK being located in Birmingham), offering mulled wine, pretzels and sausages amongst other treats.
Christmas is traditionally a Christian holiday, and many people may celebrate the Christmas holidays with visits to churches or with other religious ceremonies. However, nowadays the holiday is enjoyed by people from many different religious and cultural backgrounds, and it is not uncommon to see British people of other religions decorating their homes for Christmas, as it is a holiday for everybody. I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas!

ラーバス！（リトアニア語で「こんにちは」） リトアニアから来たジヴィレ・ヨマンタイテです。 ニックネームはジブリです。 去年の8月から国際交流員として岐阜県に来て、岐阜県の皆様 と交流しながら、リトアニアの魅力を紹介しています。 この1年半で岐阜県の素敵な自然や、温かい心のある人々を好 きになりました。 皆さん、リトアニアはどこにあるか知っていますか。 リトアニアはヨーロッパの北東部にある小さな国です。日本ではエス トニア、ラトビアと合わせてバルト三国としてよく知られています。 リトアニアの人口は280万人で（岐阜県は200万人）、面積は北海道 と同じぐらいです。リトアニアの自然といえば、湖と森が多いことが特 徴です。海もありますが、海岸は90kmだけです。海からも琥珀が取れ るのを知っていますか。バルト海で取ることができます。 ジヴィレ・ヨマンタイテさん リトアニア地図また、リトアニアのビーチは砂漠のような砂丘があって、歩くと キュキュッと音がします。他にリトアニアの自然について面白い 点は山が無いことです。一番標高が高いところでも300mもあり ません。もしかすると、これが私が岐阜県に来てから登山がこん なに好きになった理由かもしれません。 リトアニアの長い歴史はロマンチックな中世の街並みだけ ではなく、リトアニア人の日常生活にも表れています。祝祭日 を見れば、リトアニアは独立記念日が二つあります。それはリ トアニアが数回占領され、また独立したりしてきたからです。 また、キリスト教の祝日が多いです。リトアニア人はカトリックの 人が多いですが、実はヨーロッパでキリスト教を一番遅く（15 世紀）導入したのはリトアニアです。もしかすると、それで昔の リトアニアの神話（自然崇拝）の習慣が今までも多く残っているかもしれません。それでは年中行事の中で 一番大事にされているクリスマスを例にしましょう。 リトアニアのクリスマスは日本人が普段イメージしているクリスマスの 過ごし方とかなり違って、どちらかというと日本のお正月に似ていると いえるでしょう。むしろ、リトアニアのお正月はいっぱい花火が打ち上 がり、友達とパーティーをしたり、恋人と過ごしたりすることが多いので、 日本のクリスマスに近いです。 もう一つあまり知られていないのはクリスマスの日数は国によって 違います。リトアニアの場合、クリスマスの祝日は3日間も続きます。 12月24日はクリスマスイヴで、一番大事な日です。25日と26日はクリ スマスの1日目と2日目になります。この3日間を主に家族や親戚と過 ごします。 では、どんなクリスマスの伝統があるのでしょうか。実は、現在のリト アニアでのクリスマスはキリスト教と自然崇拝の習慣を含めた行事で す。なぜなら、昔はこの時期にクリスマスではなくて、冬至祭が祝われたからです。 24日は家族全員で朝から掃除、料理の準備、家の飾りつけをします。しかし、大きな仕事をしてはいけ ません。クリスマスの前の4週間は降臨節と呼ばれ、自粛して、クリスマスを待つ時期です。24日は最終日 として、降臨節の様々な規則を守らなければなりません。元々は24日は断食をして備える日で、晩御飯ま では食べてはいけません。お風呂かサウナに入ってから、きれいな服を着て、夕刻以降「宵の明星」が見 えてきたら、いよいよ食事の時間です。16時からだんだん暗くなるので、17時～18時に食事をする家庭が 多いです。食べていいものと食べてはいけないものが決まっているクリスマスイヴの料理は特別であり、リ トアニアのおせち料理と呼んでいいと思います。 砂漠のようなリトアニアの砂丘 世界遺産であるヴィリニュス市の 旧市街（GoVilnius提供） 伝統的な模様がついたクリスマスツリー
食卓に12～13の料理が並べられ、12カ月を象徴している（太陰暦は13カ月あった）と思われています。 しかし、その中には、肉、乳製品、卵が入ったのが一つもなく、肉の代わりに、魚、キノコを使った料理、リ ンゴのパンケーキ、豆のサラダ、ビーツのスープ等がよく食べられます。そして、食べる前にお祈りをしま す。 24日の夜は魔法的だと信じられていて、食事後、来年がどんな年になるのか、例えば結婚するかなど の占いをします。例えば、1人ひとりがテーブルクロスの下に置いてある麦わらを1本取って、その形や長 さによって、来年健康な年になるか、幸福な年になるかなど分かります。同じように、ろうそくの溶けたみ つろうを水に流して、固まった形によって来年の福が決まります。おみくじのようですね。1年のうちでの24 日の夜中だけは動物が話せるようになるとも言われています。また、夜に祖先の魂が食事を取りに帰って 来るので、予備の皿を置くこと、食べ終わったら、料理を残す習慣もあります。 25日の朝に子供たちはプレゼントを開けたり、家族で教会に行ったりします。この日は主に家族と過ご す日で、26日に友達や親戚と会うことも多いです。この時期に子供は2週間も冬休みがあるので、外で雪 で遊んだり、のんびりしたりできます。 リトアニアのクリスマスはどうですか。今まで持っていたクリスマスのイメージと違っていたでしょうか？
English Version
Labas! (It means “Hi!” in Lithuanian) I am Živilė Jomantaitė (In Japanese my nickname is Gibli) and I come from Lithuania. Last August I came to Gifu as a coordinator for international relations, and have been introducing Lithuania to residents of Gifu through various exchange activities. Over this year and a half I fell in love with the wonderful nature and lovely people in Gifu prefecture.
Do you know where Lithuania is? Lithuania is a small country in the North-East of Europe. In Japan, the three countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are often known as the Baltic States.
Lithuania has a population of 2.8 million (Gifu prefecture has about 2 million) and is about the same size as Hokkaido. Lithuania has a lot of lakes and forests.
There is access to the sea as well, but the coastline only extends for 90 km.
Did you know that you can collect ambers from the sea? You can, if it is the Baltic Sea. Also, Lithuanian beaches have sand dunes that resemble deserts, and the sand squeaks as you walk.
Another interesting fact about Lithuanian nature is that there are no mountains here. The highest spot is lower than 300 m. Maybe that is why I love climbing mountains in Gifu so much?
The long history of Lithuania can be seen not just through the romantic looking medieval townscapes, but also in the everyday life of Lithuanians.

If you take a look at the national holidays of Lithuania, you would see that there are two independence days. That is because Lithuania had been occupied multiple times and had to re-establish its
independence. Also, there are a number of Christian holidays. A lot of Lithuanians are Catholic, but in fact, Lithuania was the last country in Europe to adopt Christianity (the 15thcentury). And probably for
this reason many traditions from the old Lithuanian beliefs remain to this day. Let’s take Christmas, the biggest celebration of the year, as an example. Lithuanian Christmas celebration differs quite a bit from the Christmas that Japanese usually have in mind and is much closer to Japanese New Year’s festivities. In fact, the New Year is full of fireworks and
Lithuanians tend to spend it organizing parties with their friends or spending time with significant others, resembling the way Japanese spend Christmas. Another less known fact is that the amount of Christmas days differs from country to country. In Lithuania, the Christmas holidays last for 3 days. The 24thof December is the Christmas Eve, the most
significant day. The 25thand 26thare the first and the second Christmas day respectively. We spend these
three days mostly with our family and relatives.
So, what kind of Christmas traditions are there in Lithuania? Actually, modern Christmas has a mix of Christian and pagan traditions. That is because in the past we celebrated Winter solstice and not Christmas.
From early morning on the 24th, the whole family starts preparing for the Christmas: cleaning, cooking,
and decorating the home. However, any hard work is forbidden. The four weeks before Christmas is the Advent period, when we have to refrain from many things while waiting for Christmas. And as the last day of Advent, there are a lot of rules to keep on the 24th. Originally, you were not supposed to eat
anything until the Christmas Eve dinner. And only after you have washed yourself clean in a bath or sauna, changed into clean clothes and the Evening star has shown up after the sunset, you finally can gather for the meal. It starts getting dark around 4PM, so most families dine around 5 or 6 PM.
Some food items are forbidden on Christmas Eve, so even the meals are unique on this day. You could even call it the Lithuanian Osechi-ryōri. 12 or 13 dishes are placed on the table, as it is believed that they represent each month (the Lunar calendar had 13 months). However, there is no meat, dairy or eggs in any of them. Instead of meat, fish, mushrooms dishes, apple pancakes, bean salad, beetroot soup and such are popular. A prayer is said before the meal.
It is believed that the night of the 24this magic, so Lithuanians try to predict the next year, to find out if
they will get married, etc. For example, each one picks a straw from underneath the tablecloth and by the length and shape of it can tell if next year will be healthy or bring happiness.

Similarly, you can tell next year’s fortune from the shape of melted candle wax poured into a bowl of water. It’s almost like Omikuji. It is also said that animals can talk on this one night a year. And also, the souls of our ancestors come to feast at night, so there is a tradition to leave an empty plate and meals on the table. On the 25thchildren open their presents and the whole family visits a church. This day is
usually spent with family, and on the 26thwe meet with friends and other relatives. There is a 2 week
winter holiday for kids, so they play with snow outside and relax.
