Synopsis

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of salt, which is mixed in concrete using sea water as mixing water, to the corrosion of the embedded steel bars in concrete exposed in marine environment for l0 years.

In addition, the aughors investigate the changes of the comprgssive strength of concrete during 10 years in marine environment, including those of concrete using sea water as mixing water.

The conclusions below are obtained. (1) The chloride contents of the concrete which penetrates from the ambient marine environment are large where the cover depth of the concrete is small. (2) The influence of the chloride which comes from sea water as mixing water on the corrosion is possibly be negligible from the engineering view point. (3) The compressive strength of concrete at the age of 10 years is smaller than that of 5 years.

N. Otsuki is a senior research engineer of Structure Division at the Port &

Harbour Research Institute, Kanagawa, Japan. His research interests include prestressed concrete port & harbour structures as well as durability of concrete in marine environment.

Y. Mori is a chief engineer of Construction Division at Kansai International Airport Company,LTD.,Osaka, Japan. His main interest is now researching the construction method of Kansai International Airport.

H. Seki is a professor of civil engineering at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan.

He received his Doctor of Engineering Degree in 1978 from University of Tokyo.

His main interest is now the theorem of long safety of reinforced concrete structures including cracking, deterioration and corrosion of reinforcing bars.

Then it follows immediately from a suitable version of “Hensel’s Lemma” [cf., e.g., the argument of [4], Lemma 2.1] that S may be obtained, as the notation suggests, as the m A
