Abstract In his Ethica Nicomachea Book V, Aristotle treated justice as one of the virtues of character, but there is an interpretative dispute as to whether his general theory of a virtue as some ‘intermediate’ emotional state isapplicable to justice or not, especially because Aristotle himself seems to be reluctant to admit that there is some simple intermediate state of feeling(s) which could be cited as causally explanatory of just actions, since according to him justice is characteristically and essentially a virtuetoward the other, so that the matter here is much more complicated thanin the cases of courage and temperance. In this paper, on the basis of the interpretations of several passages concerning (kinds of) justice, equity, consideration, practical wisdom, and friendship, it is arguedthat he could safely assume some complex and socialized emotional intermediate state for justice which would produce paradigmatically just actions, and that such an intermediate state should thereby provide anagent with an unbiased and prudent appreciation of the situation he is in. It is also argued that thinking about justice inevitably involves reflection on normative human nature as exemplified in an equitable person in his society, i.e., in its multistory institutional conventions.
