次の英文を読み、設問に答えなさい。

“Say cheese ... and smile!”How many times have you heard these words when ( ① )is taking your picture? These words remind me of special times: taking pictures at a birthday party, on a trip to an interesting place, or when meeting an old friend after a long time. But

アthese days people seem to take pictures anytime, not only on special occasions. Everywhere I look, I see people with digital cameras!

Now, digital cameras are very popular. They are small, light and very easy to use. With one camera, you can take pictures of things that are very small and close to you, as well as things that are far away. You can take one picture in color and the next イone in black and white. Unlike old manual cameras, you can quickly see the picture you have just taken, and throw away ( ② )you don’t like. And you can do all of this by pushing a few buttons. No special skills are needed.

Digital cameras have changed the way people do photography. It is difficult to (A) imagine now, but in 1826 it took Nicephoré Niepcé eight hours to take the world’s first permanent picture. Early photographers like Niepcé wanted to know how light could create chemical reactions, and how these chemical reactions could leave an image on a surface. Early photos were printed in black and white on metal plates, glass, paper, and eventually film. Color was sometimes hand-painted on the image until inventors discovered ways to (B) produce it through the photography process. From its early days, photography was a matter of science.

Before digital cameras were developed, photographers used manual film cameras. With a manual film camera, a photographer controls everything on the camera by hand. This means the photographer has to look carefully at a scene and decide how he wants to photograph it. If a photographer is taking a picture of a tree, he can (C) adjust the amount of light coming into the camera. More light might make the Ⅶ

tree look fresh and beautiful. Less light and the same tree might look dark and scary. By understanding how the camera works, imagining how a photo will look, and adjusting the camera settings, a photographer

Sunshine Company, a leading maker of solar energy systems for homes and office buildings is moving into the fashion market. This spring, Sunshine plans to start selling a new series of fashionable bags that use a mini-solar panel. Called “Power Bags,”these bags have a mini-solar panel on the outside, special pockets to hold electronic appliances, and cords to connect the mini-solar panel to the electronic appliances. Sunshine’s “Student Power Bag”is easy to carry and has three small pockets for charging a cell phone, music player, and electronic dictionary. Their“Business Power Bag”is a case for carrying and charging a laptop computer. Sunshine is also working on a “Travel Power Bag”that people can use when they visit foreign countries. With this bag, travelers can take and use their own electronic appliances even if the electrical systems in their home country and foreign country are different. Sunshine expects to have the “Travel Power Bag”ready for sale in April.

“We created the‘Power Bags’because we wanted to encourage young people to use solar energy,”says Sunshine spokesman Ray Bright. “We noticed that people carry a lot of electronic equipment. If someone is out and their cell phone battery dies, they can’t use the phone until they get home and recharge the battery. We thought if young people see how easy solar energy is to use, they might start thinking about living in a solar-powered home in the future. The more we use solar power, the healthier our planet will be.” Whether you are interested in fashion or energy savings, check out your local department store this April for Sunshine’s “Power Bags.”

Imagine [ア] for a blind person to touch one! After meeting an elephant for the first time, a doctor and patient will set a small goal. If the patient is a blind child and she cannot get a drink of water by herself, the goal might be to learn how to fill a cup with water. When she reaches the goal, the patient gets to meet the elephant again as a reward. Over time and many visits with the elephant, a patient learns new skills, becomes more confident, and makes a close friend in the process.

We can see that animal therapy can help people, but [イ]? It is possible that therapy animals don’t realize that they are working when they encounter people in therapy sessions. Rather they might think that they are receiving “people therapy” instead.

The ( オ ) of losing forests must not be ignored. We must examine the massive waste of our society, of which a small example is disposable wooden chopsticks. Once we have become accustomed to the conveniences of modern life, it is not easy to acquire new, less convenient ways of living which will protect the natural environment. But we should keep it in mind that although one small action may not be able to change the world, it will be changed by many such small actions.

次の英文を読んで設問に答えなさい。

In Japan today, we use disposable wooden chopsticks in our everyday life. Many people ( 1 ) use them can be noticed in cafeterias and restaurants. Disposable chopsticks are convenient and pleasant to use. They are convenient because they are used only once and don’t need ( ア ). They are pleasant because they are always new.

We discard too many chopsticks however, and it costs too many trees. It was recently reported that about three hundred billion chopsticks were thrown away in Japan. The pile of those ( イ ) wooden chopsticks would be roughly four times higher than Mt. Fuji.

About 90 percent of the disposable wooden chopsticks used in Japan are imported from China. But they are also imported from other countries, such as Vietnam and Malaysia.

Most Japanese use disposable chopsticks freely every day. It seems that we hardly notice ( 2 ) serious problems they cause to the global environment. In China, ( 3 ) most of the disposable chopsticks come from, for example, floods caused by deforestation have become a serious problem. Chinese farmers cut down all their trees at once; they do not simply trim their forests by cutting down some trees and leaving the others ( ウ ).

It is certain that deforestation causes serious problems since forests play an important role in the global environment. First, forests prevent both floods and droughts. Forests are called ‘green dams’. This is because the soils of forests absorb and store rainwater before it is slowly drained into rivers. If there are forests, therefore, river levels do not rise suddenly ( 4 ) it rains heavily.

Second, forests clean rainwater. As rainwater runs through the forest soils, harmful substances are taken in by the plants and filtered out by the soils. This is ( 5 ) ‘mineral water’ is produced. Mineral Water is water that comes out of the ground naturally and is considered to be good and healthy to drink; these days, many kinds of mineral waters are available everywhere in stores.

Third, forests can also stop landslides. As leaves, twigs and boughs pile up in forests, the soils do not get washed away even in ( エ ) rain. The interlacing roots of trees underground, too, help to prevent landslides because of the way they establish themselves deep in the soil.

次の英文を読み、設問に答えなさい。

Many people, after growing a little heavy from too much eating, too much lying around, or just having too much fun, make the decision to shape up ( ア ) joining a sports club. Joining alone won’t help you lose weight. You must exercise of course, on a regular basis. Also to consider, you must start slowly. Starting off by running a marathon will surely do more harm than good. And finally, to ensure that you keep up the routine, there are several approaches you can use to make the exercise experience interesting, like listening to music.

To really get in shape, and to lose weight, you must exercise on a regular basis. “Regular basis”means ( ① ). Not just on the few days you feel like it, but, for example, every other day, or every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It has to be often and consistent. This discipline will surely help make you feel good ( イ ) yourself, and of course, help you to lose weight.

After a long period of inactivity, your body is probably quite out of shape. Therefore, you must begin your new exercise routine ( ② ), building up little by little. If you plan on using a Cross Trainer machine for example, begin with short repetitions; two sets of ten minutes each. If you plan on doing weight training, start with light lifting; use two-kilo dumbbells ( ウ ) three-kilo.

Honestly speaking, exercise in an indoor sports gym can be boring. Facing a blank wall doing repeated movements is not the ( ③ ) thing in the world. What then can be done to make time pass more quickly, and to make this a more fulfilling experience? The answer is distraction. Ⅵ

You must distract your mind ( エ ) other thoughts and feelings outside of the gym. If your sports club has TV monitors, plug in and watch TV. If you have an MP3 player, tune in to some nice music, or listen Sincerely yours,

Phyllis Beesly Stockroom Manager
