David Beckham is one of the best known personalities in Britain. He is a famous footballer, playing first for Manchester United and then for the Spanish team Real Madrid. Beckham was also the captain of the England team until July 2006. David Beckham is also famous for his good looks and celebrity lifestyle. He married a member of the Spice Girls pop group, Victoria Adams, better known as Posh Spice, and their wedding ceremony in July 1999 received massive media attention. In fact, the Beckhams are always hot news and it is no surprise that David Beckham is one of the most important stars in the advertising world, and is seen in adverts all over the world.

David Beckham was born in 1975 in east London, and from an early age it was clear that he had great talent as an athlete and footballer. Although the Beckham family lived a long way from Manchester, they were big fans of the famous football club Manchester United. youth training scheme by Manchester United. Finally in 1992 David got to play for Manchester United’s first team, in which he became a star player.

But David Beckham did not always please his fans. Famously, in 1998, when he was playing in the England team against Argentina in the World Cup, he received a red card and was sent off. The fans blamed Beckham’s behaviour for the English team losing the game and their chance to win the World Cup. Newspapers said he was“spoilt”and“needed to grow up”. But Beckham could not stay out of favour forever, and finally he was forgiven by the English fans and the media.

There is no doubt that David Beckham is considered a part of the British way of life, and an illustration of this is that his name was used in a popular film title: Bend It Like Beckham released in 2002. The film tells of a girl called Jess who belongs to a traditional Indian family living in Britain. Her parents want her to study hard, get a good job but ulti-mately marry and be a good wife. But Jess is crazy about football and secretly joins a football team. There is an enormous fuss when her fam-ily finds out because they think football is not a suitable thing for a girl to do. The film is intelli-gent and humorous, and shows the problems someone from a traditional Indian background faces when trying to fit in with modern British society. One critic said:“Mr Beckham should be proud to have his name on such a great film”.
