ABSTRACT
Despite the fact that the incorrect use of English is condemned squarely by major
news organizations, it has come to be used with impunity. This paper attempts to study
the extent of the incorrect use of English language in newspapers and magazines.
This paper focuses on two expressions that are commonly used incorrectly:
"compare to" which has come to be employed when juxtaposing two or more items to
explain similarities and/or differences, and "another" which has come to be used as a
synonym for "additional." Data obtained by on-line and print versions of English
newspapers and magazines show that there was a non-negligible percentage of cases
where incorrect use of the two expressions was found. It was also found out that there
was a fairly large difference in the correctness of the usage between the news
organizations. Moreover, even some dictionaries and grammar books seem to be
nonchalant about such distinction.
1.は じ め に 「言 葉 は 生 き物 」で あ る の は 英 語 も 日本 語 も変 わ ら な い は ず だ 。 す な わ ち 年 月 と と も に 語 法 な ど が 微 妙 に変 遷 して い くの は だ れ も 止 め ら れ な い 。 しか し、 こ の た め に 困 っ た 事 態 が 生 じ る 。 非 母 語 者 と し て 英 文 を 毎 日 の 仕 事 で 書 か ざ る を 得 な い 日 本 人 英 文 ジ ャ ー ナ リ ス トに と っ て は 特 に そ う だ 。 「誤 用 」だ と し て 耳 に た こ が で き る ほ ど エ デ ィ タ ー か ら避 け る よ う に 言 わ れ た 表 現 が 数 年 、 数 十 年 た つ と い つ の ま に か 「正 用 」 で あ る か の よ う に 「大 き な 顔 」 を し て 存 在 す る の は 珍 し い こ と で は な い 。 筆 者 は 日本 の 通 信 社 の 英 文 ニ ュ ー ス ・セ ク シ ョ ン で ラ イ タ ー を12年 、 エ デ ィ タ ー を2年 、 米 国 の 通 信 社(ニ ユ ー ヨ ー ク)で ラ イ タ ー を2年 経 験 し た が 、 誤 用 だ と し て 避 け る よ う 厳 し く言 わ れ たexpressionsの 中 に 「comparewithの 意 味 で のcompareto」1)2)と 「otherの 意 味 で のanother」 が あ っ た こ と を 今 で も
鮮 明 に 覚 え て い る 。 本 論 文 で は 日英 米 の ジ ャ ー ナ リ ズ ム で ど れ だ け こ れ ら二 つ の い わ ゆ る 「誤 用 」 が 「正 用 」 と して ま か り通 っ て い る か コ ン ピ ュ ー タ ー も使 っ て 調 査 し た3)。 こ れ ら二 つ を 取 り上 げ た の は 筆 者 に と っ て 最 も気 に か か り 、 目 立 っ た か ら だ 。
筆 者 が 英 文 ニ ュ ー ス を 書 い て い た と き 「バ イ ブ ル 」 の よ う に い つ も手 元 に 置 い て 参 照 し て い たThe Japan Times(以 下JTと 略 す)の 『和 英 翻 訳 ハ ン ドブ ッ ク』 と 米 国 の 代 表 的 通 信 社Associated Press(以 下APと 略 す)のStylebookを 改 め て 見 た 。 両 方 と も比 較 す る 場 合 にcompare toを 使 う こ と やadditionalの 意 味 でotherの 代 わ り にanotherを 使 う こ と を 避 け る よ う指 示 し て い る 。
2.研
究 の 方 法
ま ず 各 種 の 英 和 辞 典 や 英 英 辞 典 、 文 法 書 が 「compare toとcompare with」 「anotherとother」 の 意 味 や 用 法 に つ い て ど の よ う に 言 及 し て い る か 調 査 した 。 そ の う え で 、 英 国 の 高 級 週 刊 誌The Economist、 同 国 の 保 守 系 高 級 日刊 紙The Daily Telegraph、 日 本 のThe Daily Yo〃iiuri、米 国 の ニ ュ ー ス 週 刊 誌Newsweek
が 実 際 ど の よ う に 使 い 分 け て い る かCD-ROM版 や オ ン ラ イ ン ・デ ー タ ・サ ー ビ ス な ど も使 っ て 定 量 的 に 調 べ た 。 そ し て イ ン タ ー ネ ッ ト を 使 い 、 大 規 模 な コ ー パ ス の 一 つ で あ るBritish National Corpus(BNC)を イ ン タ ー ネ ッ トの 簡 易 検 索 を使 っ て 参 照 す る と と も に 、 イ ン フ ォ ー マ ン ト(ネ イ テ ィ ブ ・ス ピ ー カ ー)の 意 見 も 聞 い た 。 3.JTとAP JTは 誤 用 と し てcomparetoとcomparewithの 混 同 を 挙 げ て い る 。
comparetoに お け るcompareは 「た と え る(liken)」 の 意 で 、comparewithは 「比 較 す る 」で あ る 。 し か し 、 最 近 は 教 養 あ る 英 米 人 で も こ の 相 違 を 知 ら ず 、 両 者 を 一 つ の 意 味 「比 較 す る 」 だ け に 用 い る
と指 摘 し 、 例 文 を 挙 げ て い る 。

と 指 摘 し て い る 。
Another is not a synonym for additional: it refers to an element that somehow
duplicates a previously stated quantity.

英 国 の 通 信 社Reutersもanotherに つ い て 同 様 の 言 及 を行 っ て い る 。

4.辞
書 、 文 法 書 で は ど の よ う に な っ て い る か
手 元 に あ る6つ の 英 英 辞 典 、 同 じ く4つ の 英 和 辞 典 と4つ の 語 法 ・文 法 書 を 調 査 し て み た 。
ま ずcompare withとcompare toに つ い て み て み よ う 。
14の 辞 書 、 文 法 書 に 当 た っ た と こ ろ 、 お お ま か に い っ て3種 類 に 分 か れ た 。 本 論 文 で は 便 宜 的 に 、
①JT、 APな ど の よ う にcompare withとcompare toは 明 確 に使 い 分 け ら れ る べ き だ と す る 「厳 密 路 線 」、
② 逆 に 二 人 、 二 つ の モ ノ あ る い は 事 柄 を 比 較 す る 場 合 、compare withで も compare toで も構 わ な い と す る 「融 和 路 線 」、

次 に 実 際 の ニ ュ ー ス 記 事 に 当 た っ て み る 。 ま ず 英The Economist on CD-ROM
2000年 版 を 使 っ て 、compare toとcompare withを 検 索 し 、 ど の よ う に 使 わ れ
て い る か 調 べ た 。
調 査 対 象 期 間 を2000年1月 と し た5)。Compareと い う 現 在 形 で の 使 用 は な
か っ た 。 同 月 中 、 過 去 ・過 去 分 詞 形compared toは3カ 所 で 見 つ か り 、 そ の う
ち2カ 所 で は 比 較 の 意 味 で 使 わ れ て い た 。
一 つ は2000年1月8日 付 の"Egypt's vulnerable Copts:Egypt's Copts under
pressure"の 記 事 の 中 で 、

5.2英The Daily Telegraphの 記 事 調 査
次 に 英 国 の 高 級 保 守 系 日刊 紙Theily Telegraphの 記 事 をCD-ROM版 を 使 っ て 調 査 し た 。
2000年1月1日 か ら1月31日 の 全 記 事 中 、compared toは44カ 所 で 使 わ れ て お り、 そ の う ちcompared toが 比 較 の 意 味 で 使 わ れ た の は 実 に36カ 所 に 上 っ た 。The Daily Telegraphで は こ う し た 用 法 は 認 め ら れ て い る よ う だ 。 そ の う ち2例 を 挙 げ て み る 。
2000年1月3日 付 の"Letter to the Sports Editor:Mountain Safety at Peak"の 記 事 の 中 で 、

5.3The Daily Yomiuriの 調 査
次 に 日本 の 英 字 紙 で 唯 一 オ ン ラ イ ン記 事 検 索 サ ー ビ ス(ヨ ミ ダ ス 文 書 館)を 提 供 して い るThe Daily Yomiuriの2000年1月 の 全 記 事 を 検 索 し た 。 ヨ ミ ダ ス を 使 っ てcompareで 検 索 す る と 過 去 ・過 去 分 詞 形 のcompared toを 含 む 記 事 が19 本 見 つ か り 、compare toと い う 現 在 形 を 含 む 記 事 は な か っ た 。 こ れ ら19本 の
Yomiuriで も 許 容 さ れ て い る よ う だ 。 例 と し て2本 を 挙 げ る と 、2001年1月1 日 付 の"Streetcars-a 21st century dream"と 題 し た 記 事 の 中 で 、

2000年1月20日 付 の"Yahoo Japan shares top 100 ml yen"の 記 事 中 、

と あ っ た 。 5.4米Newsweek誌 の 調 査 米 国 の 代 表 的 な ニ ュ ー ス 週 刊 誌Newsweekに つ い て も調 べ た 。 調 査 対 象 期 間 は2000年1月 で 、5冊 発 行 さ れ て い た 。CD-ROM版 は 日 本 で は 入 手 で き ず 、 図 書 館 か らバ ッ ク ナ ン バ ー を 借 り出 して 、5冊 と も最 初 か ら最 後 の ペ ー ジ ま で 読 破 し て い く と い う"原 始 的 な"方 法 を 採 用 せ ざ る を 得 な か っ た 。 Compare toの 用 例 は な く 、compared toは2カ 所 で 使 わ れ て お り、 い ず れ も 比 較 の 意 味 で の 使 用 だ っ た 。Compared toを 使 っ た 文 は 、(16) Two researchers at the University of Louisville, Victoria and Dennis Molf have
studied the brainwaves of the infants and compared them to the reading skills of
the same kids at 8.
た だ 、(16)のcompare toは 脳 波 と読 む 能 力 を 比 べ て お り、 比 較 対 象 は 同 種 の もの で は な い 。 調 査 対 象 期 間 のNewsweekで は41カ 所 でanotherが 使 わ れ て い た が 、 JTや APの 指 示 に 反 し た 使 い 方 は 全 く な か っ た 。 表1 4紙 ・誌 のcompare(d)toとanotherの 用 例 数 お よ び 「誤 用 」 6.BNCの 用 例 検 証 英 国 で 権 威 の あ る コ ー パ ス 、BNCに も 当 た っ て み た 。
ま ず 現 在 形compare toの 用 例 を 調 べ る と 、34例 あ り、 そ の う ちcompare with の 意 味 で 使 わ れ て い る の は1例 の み だ 。

次 に 過 去 ・過 去 分 詞 形compared toの 用 例 は2,176あ る と さ れ 、 そ の う ち50 例 が 出 て き た 。 そ の 中 で43例 がcompared withの 意 味 で 使 わ れ て い た 。 一 例 を挙 げ る と 、

も一 つ あ っ た 。

7.イ ン フ ォ ー マ ン トの 意 見 イ ン フ ォ ー マ ン トへ の 調 査 と して 日 本 の 大 学 で 英 語 を 教 え て い る40∼50 代 の ネ イ テ ィ ブ ・ス ピ ー カ ー4人(英 国 、 米 国 、 オ ー ス トラ リ ア 人)に 意 見 を 聞 い た 。 4人 に 前 述 のAPス タ ィ ル ブ ツ ク 中 のcompareとanotherに 関 す る 記 述 を 見 せ た 。
4人 の う ち1人 はcompare withの 意 味 でcompare toを 使 うべ きで は な い と の APス タ イ ル ブ ッ ク の ル ー ル は 「標 準 的 な も の(standard)」 だ と 指 摘 、 後 の3人 は 「ど ち ら を 使 っ て も構 わ な い(used either way)」 と述 べ 、 意 見 が 分 か れ た 。 Anotherに つ い て1人 は 、 APス タ イ ル ブ ッ ク に 書 い て あ る の が 本 来 の 使 い 方 だ が 、 最 近 、 混 乱(confusion)が み ら れ る と 指 摘 し た 。 後 の3人 はanotherを otherの 意 味 で 使 っ て も構 わ な い の で は な い か と の 見 方 を 表 明 、 再 び 意 見 が 分 か れ た 。 8.結 論 (1)Compareに つ い て ま ず 注 目 し た の は 辞 書 、 文 法 書 の 定 義 が4で 指 摘 した よ う に3種 類 に 分 か れ 、 バ ラ バ ラ だ っ た 点 だ 。
さ ら に 注 目す べ き は 調 査 対 象 の4紙 ・誌 す べ て でcompared toで 比 較 を 示 し た 例 が い ず れ も過 半 数 を 超 え た と い う 点 だ 。 す な わ ち4紙 ・誌 と もcompared toと す る 過 去 形 に 関 し て はAPやThe Japan Timesが 避 け る よ う指 示 して い る 「誤 用 」 が 堂 々 と ま か り通 り、 ほ ぼ 「正 用 」 を 駆 逐 して い る 状 況 が 明 ら か に な っ た 。Compare toと す る 現 在 形 で はThe Daily Telegraphに し か 用 例 が 見 つ か らず 、 ま た そ の う ち 「誤 用 」 率 も2割 だ っ た の で 、 踏 み 込 ん だ こ と は い え な い 。 そ も そ もニ ュ ー ス 記 事 で 現 在 形 で 出 て く る こ と は 珍 しい の で は な い か 。
本論 文 で は取 り上 げ な か った 米 国 の 新 聞 ジ ャー ナ リズ ム は ほ とん どAPの 配
信 を受 け て お り、APと は異 な るス タ イル を採 用 して い る とは まず 考 え られ な
い 。 とい うの はAPと 異 な る ス タイ ル を 用 い て い る場 合 、
AP配 信 記 事 を使 用
す る際 、 異 な る部 分 は い ちい ち 自社 の ス タイ ル に直 さ な けれ ば な ら ない 面 倒
が 生 じる か らだ。
本 論 文 で の 「誤 用 」 は あ く ま で もJTやAPな ど の 用 法 か ら外 れ て い る 用 法 で あ り、 「正 用 」 と は 当 初 「誤 用 」で あ っ て も広 く 使 わ れ る よ う に な っ た 用 法 も 含 ん で い る 。 も ち ろ ん こ れ はanother/otherに も 当 て は ま る 。 (2)anotherに つ い て はJTやAPで 求 め て い る よ う な 用 法 に つ い て の 言 及 は 手 元 に あ っ た13の 辞 書 、 文 法 書 で は 全 く な か っ た 。 問 題 意 識 が 欠 如 して い る の だ ろ うか 。Newsweekで は 「誤 用 」は 一 つ も な く(anotherは41カ 所 で 使 用)、 The Economist(138カ 所 でanotherが 使 わ れ そ の う ち 「誤 用 」は8カ 所)とThe Daily Yomiuri(179カ 所 でanotherが 使 わ れ そ の う ち 「誤 用 」は9カ 所)で は 割 合 は negligibleだ っ た が 、 The Daily Telegraphは436カ 所 の う ち30カ 所 と や や 多 い の が 気 に か か っ た 。 た だ 、compared toと は 対 照 的 にanotherに つ い て は ま だ 「誤 用 」 率 は 低 い よ う だ 。(3)最 後 に こ の よ う に 「誤 用 」 が 一 部 で 徐 々 に 「正 用 」 化 し て い る 理 由 や 背 景 に つ い て 考 察 し て み る 。 英 文 ジ ャ ー ナ リズ ム で は 読 者 に と っ て 分 か りや す く 、 明 晰 な 表 現 、 文 章 を 求 め て お り 、JTやAPがcompare toとcompare with, anotherとotherを 厳 密 に 区 別 し て 使 う よ う 指 示 し て い る の は そ の 一環 と言 え よ う。 一 方 、 英 文 ジ ャ ー ナ リズ ム の 外 の 一 般 社 会 で 英 語 を使 う 人 た ち の 中 で 煩 雑 な 区 別 を 避 け 、 な る べ く簡 単 な 言 い 回 し を 求 め る 傾 向 が み ら れ る の は 無 理 も な い と言 え よ う。 こ れ ら二 つ の 流 れ が ぶ つ か り合 い 、 長 期 的 に は 後 者 の 力 が 次 第 に 優 る よ う に な っ て 「誤 用 の 正 用 化 が 進 む 」 の で な い か と 筆 者 は 暫 定 的 に 結 論 を 下 し た 。
米Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)のSteven Prinker教 授 は 英 科 学
誌Natureの2000年3月30日 号(Vol.404)に 掲 載 さ れ た"Survival of the clearest"
の 学 習 者 に よっ て聞 か れ 、 覚 え られ るほ どの頻 度 で使 われ な けれ ば な らな い。
話 者 の 語 彙 に新 しい単 語 が 加 わ る につ れ て 、古 い単 語 の使 われ る頻 度 は減 り、
消 え失 せ や す くな り、 そ の言 語 の表 現 力 は 前 よ り落 ち る こ と に な る」と指 摘
して い る が、 こ れ は 「
誤 用 」の 「
正用 」化 の背 景 を探 る う え で一 つ の有 力 な示 唆
を与 え て い る とい え よ う。
