Gratitude to the Rural and Environmental Engineering and Invitation to the Paddy and Water Environment
NAKANO Yoshisuke*
I regard it a great honor to extend the remarks on the final issue of the Rural and Environ- mental Engineering (REE) . Owing to your cooperation, REE has published 44 issues during the last 22 years. First of all, I would like to express a word of gratitude to all the editorial staff, contributors and subscribers, as well as, to all who have devoted time and effort to REE. As a journal written in English, REE has contributed to inform the international commu-nity about the scientific and technological ideas developed in Japan. After this No. 44 issue, REE will be succeeded by the Journal of International Society of Paddy and Water Environment
(PWE). This is the jump from a domestic journal to a real international journal.
In March of 2002, the delegates of JSIDRE of Japan, KSAE of Korea and CSAE of Taiwan had the first conference in Kyoto to establish a new international journal to exchange scientific and technological information on paddy farming engineering. In June of 2002, the second con- ference was held with the delegates of the above three countries in Seoul and decided to publish a new international journal, Paddy and Water Environment from a well-known international publisher. Finally, Springer-Verlag, Germany, was selected as the appropriate publisher.
The aims and scope of the PWE are as follows, 'The aim of Paddy and Water Environment is to advance the science and technology of land, water and environment related disciplines in paddy-farming. The scope includes the paddy-farming related scientific and technological as- pects in agricultural engineering such as irrigation and drainage, soil and water conservation, land and water resources management, paddy multi-functionality, agricultural policy, regional planning, bioenvironmental systems, and ecological conservation and restoration in paddy farming region'. Almost all scientific and technical fields covered by REE are equally covered by PWE.
Some editorial members of REE are joined in the newly built Editorial Panel of PWE. I am looking forward to meeting you again in the PWE.
