S: Yokosuka English Information. This show is for conveying upcoming events in Yokosuka, or other information related to daily life, to foreign residents in the area.

T: Hello everyone, this is Tomi.

S: And this is Daniel. Welcome to Yokosuka English Information for the week of July 11th.

T: We’re into the middle of summer now. S: We sure are.

T: July is a big month for Yokosuka.

S: Yeah, there’s plenty of festivals that happen around this time.

T: There is that too, but there’s also a historical reason why July is a special month for Yokosuka.

S: Yokosuka…July...wait, I got it. Perry.

T: Yes.

S: Commodore Perry. He arrived in Japan in July.

T: Yes, as a little history lesson, he was the American who arrived in Japan in July of 1853.

S: He arrived in Yokosuka, specifically.

T: Yes, in Kurihama.

S: Which is now where a monument stands, commemorating his landing in Japan, and in demanding Japan open it’s ports to foreign trade, since Japan was a closed-off, isolated country at the time. T: Right. And the monument stands in what is now known as Perry

Park.

S: So at his point of landing in Kurihama, you have the Perry

Monument, Perry Park, and you also have the Perry Memorial Hall, which is a sort of small museum that tells the history of Perry’s expedition.

T: Perry is a major part of not just Yokosuka, but Japan history. S: That’s true. He’s known for the opening of Japan from a closed

country, but he also inspired Japan into thinking about modernization, after he arrived with his fleet of ships.

T: And he also inspired the beginning of the long-lasting relationship between the United States and Japan.

S: Which as an American in Japan, I’m very grateful for. EVENT INFORMATION

T: So if the listeners didn’t guess already, that’s who we’re going to talk about this episode, as there’s a major event coming up.

S: You know, before we get into that, I have a confession to make. T: Umm, okay.

S: I’m from the states, I’m an American… but before I came to Japan, I had never even heard of Perry.

T: What? You didn’t know who he was? S: No clue.

T: But…he’s Yokosuka’s Perry.

S: I know. I know now. After coming to Japan, I started hearing his name, and after going to Yokosuka for the first time, I couldn’t turn anywhere without seeing his face or name.

T: He is everywhere.

S: He’s even engraved onto the manhole covers around my

neighborhood! I’ve seen a bar named after him on Dobuita Street, even a drink named after him called Perry Cider. He is everywhere. T: No Perry, No Yokosuka.

S: Right - I definitely am familiar with Perry now. In fact, let me break down this Perry Festival real quick.

T: Okay.

S: Kurihama Perry Festival 2016.

T: Yes. A big historical event for Yokosuka.

S: This festival is a celebration and ceremony to the remembrance to Commodore Perry. It will be a large celebration, bringing in guests from both within and outside Yokosuka City. And it’s all going to take place around Kurihama, Kurihama Port, and Perry Park. T: Good so far. And what else is gonna be there?

S: You will be able to see things like: the Ceremony of the Landing of Commodore Perry - which highlights the moment of when Perry landed upon the beach of Kurihama, now known as Perry Park. And there’s also going to be the U.S.-Japan Perry Parade...

T: Anything else?

S: And this momentous occasion will be concluded with a grand display of seaside fireworks, making it an event to remember, and for sure an event you don’t want to miss.

T: And how much is it to enter the festival?

S: Absolutely free.

T: Very nice. And this all happening this upcoming Saturday, July 16th. The festival will start at 10am, and run all until 8pm.

S: Have you been there before?

T: Yes! Perry festival is one of my favorite events. Watching fireworks from sea side is so beautiful. Have you?

S: No not yet, but I’ll be sure to check it out.

T: Hopefully the listeners can check it out this week too.

S: I hope so too. Even if you don’t consider yourself a history buff, it’s still recommended, as 1) You’d learn a lot of history about the US and Japan, and 2) it’ll just be a fun festival either way, with a parade, fireworks… all kinds of stuff.

T: Yeah, I think so too.

S: There’ll also be a bazaar, with a bunch of shops and vendors, if you want to do some shopping.

T: Sounds like a big event. Anything else?

S: Of course. I saved the best for last: 動物戦隊ジュウオウジャー!

T: Huh?

S: 動物戦隊ジュウオウジャー… ok yeah I’m not really sure either as I haven’t seen it, but it’s part of the long-running Super Sentai superhero series here on TV. For any Americans out there, just think of the Power Rangers.

T: Power Rangers?

S: Yeah, that’s the TV show they made in the U.S., in the 90s, that was based off Japan’s Super Sentai series. It was really popular.

T: Yeah I haven’t heard of it.

S: Well anyways, they’ll have a show nearby in Kurihama, so it’ll be a good place to take to your kids to and have them see a cool

live-action show. It says you get to shake hands and get some autographs too from the T: Oh, okay. Have you even seen any Japanese superhero shows on

TV?

S: I haven’t seen any Super Sentai stuff really, maybe besides just parts of an episode on TV… but I watched a decent amount of Ultraman. I always liked that series. And when they had Power Rangers in the states, I watched that when I was a kid.

T: So there you go. Kurihama Perry Festival is a family friendly event. S: Yeah, so families can go, maybe learn some history about Japan, the

U.S. - get to know Perry if they don’t already, maybe shake some hands with some 動物戦隊ジュウオウジャー, see some

fireworks, and have a good time.

CLOSING
