Chapter 2 – ２つのタイプの日本語学習者

Japanese learners I met who can’t speak Japanese

• だいたい日本に ほ んに 10年ねん以上住すんでいる。

Typically, living in Japan more than ten years.

• 日本に ほ んに住すんでいても、六本木ろ っ ぽ ん ぎに行いけば英語え い ごを話はなす友達ともだちができるので、日本に ほ ん語ごは必要ひつような い。

They don’t need to speak Japanese to make friends since they can find English-speaking friends in Roppongi.

• 家族か ぞ くに日本に ほ ん人じん（親おや、妻つま、 夫おっと）がいるから自然し ぜ んに日本に ほ ん語ごができるようになる、と思おもった ら、何なん年ねん経っても話はなせるようにならない。

They expected to be fluent Japanese speakers since their family members are Japanese, however after years and years, they are still not able to speak Japanese. • 日本に ほ ん人じんの友達ともだちはいるが、なぜか英語え い ごの先生せんせいにされてしまう。日本に ほ ん人じんの奥おくさんの英語え い ごがど

んどん上手じょうずになっていく。

They have Japanese friends, though, they end up being an English teacher to them. His Japanese wife’s English is always improving.

• 子供こ ど もは英語え い ごを話はなせず、自分じ ぶ んは日本に ほ ん語ごを話はなせないので会話か い わができなくなってしまった。奥おく さんが二ふた人りの通訳つうやくをする。

They don’t speak Japanese and their kids don’t speak English, so it becomes impossible to have conversations. The wife is the translator.

• 大おと人なになってから語学ご が くをマスターするのは無理む りだ、と言いう。 They say it’s impossible to master a language in adulthood.

• 文法ぶんぽうを 勉 強べんきょうするのは大変たいへんなので、動詞活用ど う し か つ よ うなどは学まなばず、決まったフレーズをそのま ま覚おぼえる。

It’s difficult for them to study grammar, so rather than learning things like how to conjugate verbs, they simply memorize set phrases.

They have never once lived in Japan. Even though they have never been to Japan, they are able to speak with me normally from only 1 or 2 years of studying Japanese.

• ”Genki”や”みんなの日本に ほ ん語ご”のような文法

ぶんぽう

の基本き ほ んの 勉 強べんきょうは終おわらせている。 They finished learning the basic grammar found in books like "Genki" or "Minna no Nihongo".

• HelloTalk などのアプリを使つかって、日本に ほ ん人じんと友達ともだちになり、 勉 強べんきょうした日本に ほ ん語ごを実際じっさいに使つか ってみる。自分じ ぶ んの日本に ほ ん語ごのほうが、日本に ほ んじん人の英語え い ごよりも上手じょうずなので、英語え い ごの先生せんせいにされ ない。

They have made Japanese friends through language exchange apps such as HelloTalk, and actively try to use new grammar they have learned. Their Japanese is better than the average Japanese person’s English, so they don’t end up just teaching English to their language partners.

• 疑問ぎ も んに思おもったことなどは自分じ ぶ んで調しらべるので、どんどん日本に ほ ん語ごが 上 達じょうたつする。日本に ほ ん人じんの 友達

ともだち

もどんどん増ふえる。

They look up words they don't understand, so their Japanese is always improving. They are always making more Japanese friends.

これは 私わたしが会あった日本に ほ ん語ごがくしゅうしゃ学 習 者の例れいなので、もちろん日本に ほ んに 10年ねん住すんで話はなせる人ひともいる し、奥おくさんが日本に ほ ん人じんで日本に ほ ん語ごを話はなせる人ひともいます。

These are just some Japanese learners I met. Of course, there are people who have lived in Japan 10 years and are able to speak Japanese, and there are also people who have Japanese wives and can speak Japanese.

しかし、(A)のような日本に ほ ん語ごが話はなせない外国がいこく人じんの例れいはよく見みかけます。 But, I often see foreigners like (A) who cannot speak Japanese. もちろん、本人ほんにんが不満ふ ま んがないと言いうのなら、 全まったく問題もんだいありません。

Of course, if they themselves have no problem with that, there is nothing wrong. でも住すんでいれば、日本に ほ ん語ごを話はなせないと不便ふ べ んなこともあるので、不満ふ ま んを持もちます。 However, if they live in Japan, it's inconvenient if they can't speak Japanese, so they can become frustrated.

I think it's impossible to improve your level of Japanese without learning fundamental grammar. 大人お と なになってから、”日本に ほ ん人じんの赤あかちゃんが日本に ほ ん語ごを覚おぼえるように覚おぼえていく。”と言いうのは、 無理む りだと思おもいます。

I think it’s impossible for an adult to learn Japanese like a Japanese baby would.

日本に ほ ん人じんは動詞活用ど う し か つ よ うのルールなど全くわからずに日本に ほ ん語ごを話はなしている人じんがほとんどです。 Most Japanese people speak Japanese without understanding all the rules surrounding things like verb conjugation.

私

わたし

は言語学者げ ん ご が く し ゃではないので、どうして赤あかちゃんにできることが、大人お と なにできないのかは分わかり ません。

I am not linguist, so I don't know why adults can't do what babies are doing.

だけど、０歳さいから日本に ほ んに住すんでいればできることは、２０歳さいから３０歳さいまで住すんだ外国がいこく人じんはで

きないことだけは知しっています。

However, I just know that people who live in Japan from when they are 20 to 30 years old can't do what 0-year-old babies can do.

So everyone but babies, let's all learn Japanese starting with basic Japanese grammar, without having those hopeless baby language beliefs.

Chapter 3 – 日本語と英語とスペイン語

Japanese, English, and Spanish

がアメリカロスアンゼルスに住すんでいる時とき、日本に ほ ん語ごは英語え い ごネイティブにとっては、 習 得しゅうとくす るのが 難むずかしいと思おもいました。

When I lived in Los Angeles USA, I thought learning Japanese was difficult for native English speakers.

ロスアンゼルスには、スペイン語ごしか話はなさない 両 親りょうしんを持もつメキシコ系けいの子供達こ ど も た ちがたくさんいま した。

There are many Mexican American kids who have only Spanish-speaking parents from Mexico. 彼

かれ

らは、アメリカ生うまれなのでもちろん英語え い ごが第一だいいち言い語ごですが、そのほとんどの子供こ ど もたちがス ペイン語ごも話はなすバイリンガルでした。

They were born in America, so their first language is English, though most of them are bilingual and can also speak Spanish.

一方

いっぽう

、日本に ほ んから来きた親おやを持もつ日にっ系けいアメリカ人じんのほとんどが、日本に ほ ん語ごを話はなすことができませんで した。

On the other hand, many Japanese American kids who have parents from Japan were not able to speak Japanese so fluently.

の感覚かんかくでいうと、全体ぜんたいの５％くらいが話はなせたように感かんじます。 I feel like 5% of them were able to speak Japanese.

どうしてでしょうか？ Why is that?

やはり英語え い ごとスペイン語ごは言葉こ と ばの語ご源げんが近ちかいのに比くらべて、日本に ほ ん語ごは英語え い ごやスペイン語ごとは遠とおい 言い語ごだからではないかと思おもうのです。

In my opinion, it’s because English and Spanish share closer origins compared to something like English and Japanese.

もちろん、スペイン語ごを話はなせるメキシコ系けいアメリカ人じんの子供達こ ど も た ちは努力どりょくをしていると思おもいます。 Of course, I believe those Mexican American kids who speak Spanish put in the effort.

だけど、日系けいアメリカ人じんの子供達こ ど も た ちも努力どりょくしてるのに、挫折ざ せ つしていきます。

However, Japanese American kids also make an effort to learn Japanese, but many of them give up.

また、語学ご が くの得意と く い、不ふ得意と く いもあると思おもいます。

Also, some people are just naturally skilled in language acquisition while others are not. 私

わたし

の 妹いもうとは、スペイン人じんのダニエルと結婚けっこんしました。 My sister married a Spanish guy, Daniel.

お姉ねえちゃんのエレンちゃんは、１０歳さいまでスペインに住すんで、4年ねん前まえに日本に ほ んに引ひっ越こしまし た。

Their oldest daughter, Ellen, had lived in Spain until she was ten years old, and then moved to Japan four years ago.

住すみはじめた時ときは、読よみ書かきに苦労く ろ うしましたが、本人じんの努力どりょくもあり、今いまでは他ほかの日本に ほ ん人じんの 子供達

こ ど も た ち

のように読よみ書かきもできます。

When she started living in Japan, she struggled to read and write Japanese, however, now she can do these things just like other Japanese children thanks to her effort.

しかし、彼かれ女には不満ふ ま んがあります。彼女かのじょは日本に ほ んの学校がっこうの科目か も くの英語え い ごが得意と く いなのですが、日本に ほ ん人じん の同 級 生どうきゅうせいたちにはエレンちゃんはスペイン語ごができるから英語え い ごもできて当あたり前まえだと思おもわれて いるからです。

However, she still has a frustration. She gets good grades in her English class, but her

classmates think that because she can speak Spanish, it’s natural that she speaks English too. 彼女

かのじょ

は英語え い ごを家いえで一 生 懸 命いっしょうけんめいべんきょう勉 強しています。 She puts in a lot of effort studying English at home.

だから、英語え い ごができるからってスペイン語ごができる、と思おもわれたくないことはよくわかりま す。

So, I understand how Spanish speakers don’t like that people think it’s easy for them to master English and vice versa.

しかし、確率的かくりつてきに言いうと、やっぱり英語え い ごースペイン語ごの方ほうが学まなびやすいのは確たしかだと思おもいま す。

However, it is true that it’s easier for Spanish speakers than Japanese speakers to master English.

一方ほう、エレンちゃんの 妹いもうと、アンドレアちゃんは日本に ほ ん語ごはできるけれど、スペイン語ごが話はなせま せん。

On the other hand, Ellen’s younger sister, Andrea, speaks Japanese, though she can’t speak Spanish.

日本に ほ ん語ごを 勉 強べんきょうしているお父とうさんのダニエルは、お姉ねえちゃんのエレンちゃんとはスペイン語ごで 会話か い わができるのに、アンドレアちゃんとは会話か い わができませんでした。

Their dad, Daniel, who is still learning Japanese, is able to communicate with Ellen, but can’t communicate with Andrea in Spanish.

アンドレアちゃんは４歳さいの時ときに日本に ほ んに来きたので日本に ほ ん語ごは話はなせるのですが、エレンちゃんは４歳さい の時ときにはスペインで日本に ほ ん語ごもスペイン語ごもできました。彼女かのじょらのお母かあさん、 私わたしの 妹いもうとのひろみ は、アンドレアちゃんももちろん 両りょう方ほう自然し ぜ んにできるようになると思おもっていたので、お母かあさんも なんで違ちがうのだろうか、と不思議ふ し ぎに思おもったようです。

Andrea moved to Japan when she was four years old, so she speaks Japanese. When Ellen was four years old, she was able to speak both Japanese and Spanish, so their mom and my sister Hiromi wonder why Andrea can’t do as Ellen does and speak both Japanese and Spanish.

語学ご が くのつながりを 考かんがえると日本に ほ ん語ごと英語え い ごは遠とおい。

When thinking about the language family tree, Japanese and English are far away. 現

に、日本に ほ ん人じんは学校がっこうで 6年ねん以上日本に ほ ん語ごを 勉 強べんきょうするのに、ほとんどの日本に ほ ん人じんが英語え い ごを話はなせませ ん。

In fact, most Japanese can’t speak English even though we learn it for six years at school. しかし、 逆ぎゃくに言いうと、挫折ざ せ つする人じんが多おおいからこそ、その中なかで残のこり続つづけたら、需要じゅようも高たかいと言いう ことです。

However, we can say that you will shine if you survive this Japanese learning journey since many learners of Japanese give up along the way.

There also many foreigners in Japan who cannot make good money despite having perfect Japanese pronunciation.

But there are also many foreigners in Japan with perfect accents who do make money! 結 局

Chapter 5 – 日本語初心者の方へ

Dear Beginning Japanese Learners

このチャプターを見みているということは、みなさんは日本に ほ ん語ごべんきょう勉 強を始はじめたばかりだと思おもいま す。

If you are reading this Chapter, I assume you only just started learning Japanese. まず、ビギナーウィークリーレッスンを見みる前まえに必要ひつようなことがあります。

First, before watching my beginner weekly lessons, there is something you must do. ”ひらがなを覚

おぼ

えること” です。 That is, “to memorize Hiragana”. 日本に ほ ん語ごの文字も じには３種類しゅるいあります。 Japanese has three sets of characters. ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字か ん じです。

That would be Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. 日本に ほ ん語ごは、この３つを混まぜたものです。 Japanese sentences are a mix of these three. 例 たと えば、 For example, ダニエルさんは、スペイン人じんです。 Daniel is a Spanish. ”さん” ”は” ”です”は、ひらがなです。 さん, は, and です are all Hiragana. 人 じん は 漢字か ん じです。 人 じん (じん) is Kanji. ダニエル、スペイン、はカタカナです。 ダニエル and スペイン are Katakana. ひらがなは日本に ほ ん語ごオリジナルです。 Hiragana is unique to Japanese words. 漢字か ん じは、中なか国くにから来きた文字も じです。 Kanji came from China.

カタカナは、主おもに和製わ せ い英語え い ごに使つかわれます。

Katakana is used mainly for loan words, e.g. Japanese English. ひらがなと漢字か ん じの言葉こ と ばをカタカナにして 強 調きょうちょうもできます。

Words normally written in Hiragana or Kanji can also be written in Katakana for emphasis.

そして、ビギナーレッスンを見みる前まえにあなたにしてほしいことは、この”ひらがな”を覚おぼえるこ

とです。

So, what I would like you to do before watching the beginner lessons is to memorize this “Hiragana”.

Anyway, please memorize Hiragana in one week.

なぜ一 週 間いっしゅうかんか、というと、大学だいがくで日本に ほ ん語ごを専攻せんこうすると、一 週 間いっしゅうかんで覚おぼえないといけないからで す。

The reason why it should be one week is because those studying Japanese at university must memorize it in one week.

日本に ほ んの６歳さいの子供こ ど もたちは、小学校がっこうに通かよい始はじめたら６ヶ月か げ つでひらがなを覚おぼえます。

Japanese six-year-olds have six months to learn Hiragana when they start elementary school. 大人お と なのあなたなら、一 週 間いっしゅうかんで覚おぼえられますよね？

Surely you, an adult, can memorize it in one week, right?

それから、ビギナーウィークリーレッスンを始はじめてください。

Then, please start the “Weekly Lesson for Beginner”. ひらがなを覚おぼえた人じんは、カタカナも覚おぼえましょう。

まずは、Genki 1、または似にたレベルの初 級 者しょきゅうしゃの 勉 強べんきょうを終おわらせたみなさん、よく頑張が ん ばりまし たね∼！

First of all, congratulations to all those who have completed Genki 1 or level or equivalent! 素晴す ばらしい！

Wonderful!

ひらがなを覚おぼえるのは大変たいへんです。 It’s hard to memorize Hiragana.

しかもカタカナを覚おぼえ、動詞活用ど う し か つ よ うを覚おぼえ、Genki2 レベルに進める人じんは、日本に ほ ん語ごがくしゅうしゃ学 習 者の何なん％ いるのでしょうか？

What percentage of Japanese learners memorize Katakana and verb conjugation and reach Genki 2 level?

そんなあなたたちは、意思い しが固かたくて、中途半端ち ゅ う と は ん ぱなことが嫌きらいな素敵す て きな人ひとたちだと思おもいます。 I guess you are wonderful people with a strong will to continue what you have started. いいえ、 私わたしは 占うらない師しじゃありません。

No, I am not a fortune teller.

だけどあなたが、どれくらいの努力どりょくをしたのかが分わかります。 However, I do know how much work you have put in to come this far.

でも稀まれに天才てんさいもいるので、「そんなに努力どりょくしてないよ。」と言いう人ひともいるでしょうね。 But, there are some geniuses who say, “I did not make that much effort”.

それまた、なんてかっこいいんでしょう。 That sounds cool as well.

大学まなで日本に ほ ん語ごクラスを取とったのかもしれませんし、独学どくがくで 勉 強べんきょうしたのかかもしれませんし、ま たは 私わたしのビギナークラスを取とってくれたのかもしれません。

You might have taken Japanese classes at college, or studied by yourself, or you might have taken my beginner lessons.

Well, I think it depends on the individual, but in general the US is said to be a low context country and Japan a high context country.

その辺の違ちがいも理解り か いできて、日本に ほ ん語ごも話はなせれば、日本に ほ んではかなり価値か ちが高たかいと思おもわれま す。

If you can understand such high context and also speak Japanese, it would be very valuable.

Finally, what is the most important thing in learning Japanese? 結 局

There is a Japanese proverb, “Keizoku wa chikara nari” (Persistence pays off). 全

Many people get sick of it in three days.

There is another Japanese proverb, “Suki koso mono no jouzu nare (If you like doing it, you will be good at it).

Those people need goals.

「可愛か わ いい日本に ほ ん人じんの 女おんなの子こと仲なか良よくなりたい、かっこいい日本に ほ ん人じん男子だ ん しと仲なか良よくなりたい。」 “I want to be friends with cute Japanese girls, or I want to be friends with good-looking Japanese boys.”

それも立派り っ ぱなモチベーションです。 I think that is good motivation too.

日本に ほ んに住すみたい、日本に ほ ん文学ぶんがくを日本に ほ ん語ごで読よみたい、日本に ほ んの文化ぶ ん かが好すき、日本に ほ ん語ごができてすごい、 と言いわれたい。

“I want to live in Japan”, “I want to read Japanese literature in Japanese”, “I like Japanese culture”, or “I want to ‘wow’ people by speaking Japanese”.

モチベーションは何なんでもいいです。 Any motivation works.

It’s also important to make studying Japanese a habit.

というわけで、 私わたしは平日へいじつに 4 日、日本に ほ ん時間じ か ん夜よる９時じに３０分間ぷんかん、“HW だらだらクラブ”ライブを しています。

So, four days a week (weekdays), at 9:00pm Japan time, I do 30-minute “HW Dara Dara Club” streams.

「だらだら」というのはオノマトペで、「なまけた感かんじ」ということです。

“Dara dara” is a Japanese onomatope meaning, “lazily”.

なぜ「だらだら」かというと、ちゃんとやろうとすると続つづかないからです。

The reason why I call it “Dara Dara” club is because if I try and do it properly, I won’t be able to.

メインの「ウィークリーライブレッスン」は、テンション上あげて頑張が ん ばっています。

I always try to do the “Weekly Live Lessons” very enthusiastically.

だけど、この「HW だらだらクラブレッスン」は、ウィークリーレッスンの補助ほ じ ょの 練 習れんしゅうレッス ンなので、 私わたしが元気げ ん きが無なくても、髪かみがぐちゃぐちゃでも、今いま日はブスだわ∼と思おもっても、 私わたし

なんてもうダメだわ∼、と思おもっても、「だらだらクラブだから、まあいっか！」と続つづけられる

わけです！

However, these ‘HW Dara Dara Club Lessons” are supplementary to the normal weekly lesson, so I do it even when I feel down or when I feel like my hair is mess, or when I feel I look ugly, or even when I feel I am the stupidest person in the world. That’s because I think “Well it’s okay because it’s just Dara Dara Club!” and I can go right into it.
