L iving in a Tremendous E ra
This past summer w as so hot that I w as w orried that autumn w oul d never come. E ven af ter the middl e of S eptember, hot summery days and tropical nights con-tinued.
A l though it has been a w hil e since peopl e started draw ing urgent atten-tion to abnormal w eather due to gl obal w arming, it w as reported in the new s on TV on the day of the autumnal eq uinox that the A rctic S ea ice cover has mel ted to its l ow est l evel since observations by the W orl d Meteorol ogical O rganiz ation started in 19 7 9 . Until now , the l ow est w as in S eptember of 2007 , w hen the A rctic S ea ice cover w as reported to
have decreased f rom 4 .25 mil l ion km2
by 20 percent to 3 .4 1 mil l ion km2.
The A rctic S ea ice is said to pl ay the rol e of being the air conditioner of the northern hemisphere. D uring the past ive years, the ice cover has mel ted dow n by about 2.2 times the area of l and of J apan.
This means that the 8 4 0,000 km2 of ice that has mel ted dow n has become sea w ater, as w el l as moisture in the air that covers the upper atmosphere and is a maj or cause of abnormal w eather, such as the recent torrential rains and the maj or typhoons that are particul arl y f req uent this year.
A t the U.S . S enate Committee on E nergy and Natural R esources of S ep-tember 19 8 8 , P rof essor J ames H ansen of NA S A , w ho is said to have ignited the debate on gl obal w arming, cl aimed that heat w aves and abnormal w eather are caused by gl obal w arming. Tw enty- f our
years have passed since then, but even the K yoto P rotocol , w hich w as put into ef f ect in 2005 , has hardl y been enf orced at al l due to the conlicting egos of maj or countries.
P rof essor H ansen has tal ked about the ice cover of the A ntarctic O cean as w el l . I n any case, real ity is proof of the gl obal crisis.
Under these circumstances, Urayasu City is currentl y organiz ing various programs to recover as soon as possibl e f rom the damage suf f ered during the disaster l ast year. O ne of these programs is the chal l enge to create a “city in har-mony w ith the environment.”
To restore the image of our city on the residential property market, w hich suf f ered due to the damage caused by l iq uef action, Urayasu City is currentl y in the process of discussing the environ-ment and is f orming a congl omerate of industrial , governmental , and academic entities w ith 12 companies, incl uding f ive home construction companies that are pl anning f uture subdivided proper-ties.
Cl earl y, w e are l iving in a tremendous age and are ex periencing things that w ere unheard of bef ore, w ith gl obal w arming, heat w aves, and abnormal w eather, as w el l as various other disas-ters, such as the unprecedented earth-q uake, nucl ear energy and energy issues, and the estimated eruption of Mt. F uj i.
I nstead of compl aining about our mis-f ortune omis-f l iving in this particul ar age, l et’s seiz e the moment, rise to the chal -l enge, and make it our mission to do our utmost to see if and how w e can change our environment.
