Terakubo Erena was born in Sapporo in 1992. She started playing the
saxophone when she was nine. One year later, she joined a jazz orchestra
in her hometown. As a junior high school student, she got an opportunity
to attend a summer program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The
program was for talented young musicians from all over the world. After
graduating from senior high school in 2011, she entered Berklee to study jazz.

: Did you enjoy your high school life?
E
: Yes, I did. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed chatting with my classmates.
I studied English very hard because I dreamed of studying jazz in
America, which is the home of jazz.

: What did you learn through playing with musicians in America?
E
: I learned that playing music and talking in English have a lot in
common. For example, in both cases, we express our emotions through
rhythm and intonation. Therefore, I want to become more fluent in
English.
I
: How has music changed you?
E
: I have recognized the importance of my own identity as a Japanese
musician. I admire the great American jazz players, who have
built their identities in their home country. However, as a Japanese
musician, I want to develop my own original music.
I
: What do you mean by your own original music?
E
: I’d like to establish a new style of performing jazz that other musicians
haven’t thought of. I’m going to pursue this goal as I perform with
various musicians around the world.

Jazz has its root in the African Americans. Africans were brought to America as slaves. The slaves brought their music with them.
The music comforted them during their hard lives. Their music changed into the Blues, one form of jazz.
