TheAsahisubmergedforestissituatedinthenorthernpartofToyamaPrefecture,
CentralJapanTheforestwasdiscoveredfirstbyShojiFuJエエoftheToyama Universityinaboutl963.Theforestisrecentlyfamousforagoodevidenceshowing thesubsidenceofgroundtogetherwiththeUozusubmergedforest(FuJエ,1971).

lntheAsahidistrictthereisasmallcoastalsanddunewhichseemstobeformed inthelateststageofYayoianageortheearlystageofO1dtumbage,about1,500 yearsbeforethepresent・ThemarginalsedimentoftheKurobefanhasbeenerodedby wavesyearafteryear・ThesubmergenceofthecoastisnotonlyfoundattheAsahi district,butalsowidelyinthecoastalareasofToyamaPrefecture・Thephenomenon hasbeencontinuingforyearsandthisisverifiedbytheresultsofthelevelingsurvey,

IntheXurobefantherearesomeboringdata,judgingfromtheseboringdatathe
depositsatadepthof40metersto30metersbelowthepresentsealevelsuggestthat theymighthavebeensedimentedintheearlystageoftheHolocenetransgressionwhich isusuallynamedas1VboZ〃"Zcノγα,、soγesszo〃or〃α"Cfγ'α〃ノァα,zs9γesszo".Thesedeposits
●arecomposedofsandyclayormuddysandandoverliethegravellayerwhichindicates
thelowsealevelduringtheWiirmglacialstage、ThedepositsduringtheHolocene majortransgressionarefoundbetwee、about40or30metersbelowthepresent sealevelandabout5metersabovethe presentsealevel,andaretracedwidely intheKurobefanarea,thissuggests thattheareahadbeensubmergedafter thetimeoftheHolocenemajortransg‐
ressionThesedimentsoftheKurobe fanaremainlycomposedofgravel,thin sandandclaylayers,andcoverthe marinesedimentsbelongingtothetime oftheF1andriantransgression・
Thesubmergedforestshavebeen foundfromsomelocalitiesalongthe coastofToyamaBaysinceadiscovery oftheUozusubmergedforest・The Asahisubmergedforestyieldedsome erectstumpsofwoodwhichhavebeen identifiedasfollows:

TheresultofthepalynologicalinvestigationabouttheAsahisubmergedforestis
summarizedasfollows:
(1)TheageofformationoftheAsahiforestseemstobethelatestYayoior earliestO1dtumbperiod,about1,600or1,500yearsbeforethepresent.
(2)TheageinwhenmanytreesforlningtheAsahiforestweregrowingup,in thisareaseemstobeabout4,O00toaboutl,500yearsbeforethepresentfromthe viewpointofthepalynologicalandgeologicalinvestigationsonthepeatlayersand somecoastalsanddunes,andalsotheresultof14Cdatingofthesubmergederecttree stumps.

ofevergreenanddeciduousbroad-1eavedtreesandFzZg"Sc”"α'αinthecoastalplain ofHOkurikuregion.Itisaboutloto2oC1owerthanthepresenttimeinaveragetemperature・Thedecreasingwarmstagemayalmostcorrespondwiththetimeofthe
minorfallingofsealevel,thatis,fpomthemiddleageoftheThirdJOmonianperiodtothelatestageoftheYayoianortheearliestageoftheOldtumbperiod.
