Abstract

Hymenolepis ( Weinlandia) tenuicollis n. sp., Haploparaxis japonensis Yamaguti, 1935 and Fimbriaria fasciolaris (Pallas, 1781) from mallard, Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyn- chos, are described. The present species closely resembles Hymenolepis looodshole.i Fuhrmann, 1932, but it differs from the latter in the shape of rostellar hooks and in the arrangement of testes.

Three species of mallards, Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos, were collected by

Kugi at Koganohara, Beppu City on November 8, 1973. After each mallard was killed,

it was dissected for internal study. The small intestines were opened in saline solu-

tion and with the use of a dissecting microscope, a thorough examination of the int-

estinal wall followed. All mallards harbored cestodes. These cestodes were fixed in

5 per cent formaline and they were placed between the two slide glasses and pressed

enough so as to make them as flat and thin as possible, and then stained with Heiden-

hain's hematoxylin. As the result of investigation, the present specimens have been

identified with Haploparaxis japonensis, Fimbriaria fasciolaris and a new species be-

longing to the genus Hymenolepis. All measurements are given in millimeters.

Hymenoleqis (Weinlandia) tenuicollis n. sp.

The length of the specimens is 70 to 82 and themaximum width 1.5to 1.8. Thesco-

lexis 0.21 long and 0.21 to 0.27 wide, The invaginated rostellum measures 0. 168 long

and 0.070 wide; the rostellar sac is 0.196 long. The rostellum carries ten hooks

which have a shape like figure 2, Plate 1 and which are 0.039 in length; the guard

is prominent but shorter than the blade. The unarmed suckers are rounded and have

a diameter of 0.091 to 0.112. The tenuous neck measures 0.07 long and 0.13 wide.

Segmentation begins at immediately behind the scolex. The genital pores are unilateral

and situated in the anterior half of each segment margin. The genital ducts pass dor-

sally to the excretory canals. The cirrus sac is elongate and runs along the anterior

margin of the segment to the middle line. It measures up to 0.567 long and 0.138 to

0.152 wide and an invaginated cirrus is armed with very fine spines. The external

and internal seminal vesicles are extremely prominent; the former is transversely

oval, measuring 0.304 by 0.180 to 0.194 and the latter is pretty small, measuring

0.207 by 0.152 to 0.156. The three testes are arranged in a triangular position; two

of the testes are on the aporal side of the median line, one lying in the poral of the

segment. The testes, when fully developed, are transversely oval, measuring 0.138 to

0.180 by 0.235 to 0.249. The vagina is armed with the accessory sac-like terminal

swelling. At its proximal end the vagina expands into a large seminal receptacle. It is

usually transversely oval and measures 0. 138 by 0.097. The ovary lies ventrally to

the testes. In the early stage of its development it is more or less triangular in out-

line, but as development proceeds it expands laterally on both sides. When fully deve-

loped, the ovary measures 0.498 to 0.539 wide, and its margins are slightly lobed.

The vitelline gland is triangular or sub-globular, measuring 0.083 to 0.111 by 0.069

and situated in the middle line of the segment. In gravid segments the uterus is sac-

cate, and extend laterally beyonds the excretory canals. The mature eggs are rounded,

measuring 0.070 to 0.088 in diameter, while the onchospheres are 0.021 in diameter.

The embryonic hooks are about 0.007 long.

Discussion

Under the species for the reception of hymenolepids having the vagina with armed

the accessory sac-like terminal swelling, as far as can be assertained from the written

description, about 12 species are recorded.

In comparing the present new species with the 12 species, it closely resembles

Hymenolepis woodsholei Fuhrmann, 1932 from Colymbus auritus, C. holbelli and C.

grisegena. But, it is easily distinguished from H. woodsholei in the shape of rostellar

hooks and in the arrangement of testes.
