WearepleasedtopublishourthirdvolumeoftheJournalofResearchandPedagogy,acollectionofpapers bythefacultywhoworkinandsupportOtemaeUniversity'sInstituteofInternationalEducation.Forthreeyears now,thisjournalhasservedtoshowcasetheoriginalresearchandtheinnovativeclassroompedagogythatinforms ourcorecurriculumhereatOtemae.
WemoveintothethirdyearsincetheestablishmentoftheInstituteofInternationalEducationwitha confirmedcommitmenttoprovidingourstudentswithasolideducationintheliberalarts.Ourcurriculumis
designedtosupportcriticalthinking,helpingstudentsdevelopintoactivelycontributingmembersofsociety.Inthis agewheneducationandliberalideasareincreasinglyendangeredandunderattack,webelieveourcommitmentto
theseeducationalidealsandtoourstudentsisofgreatimportance.
Theresearchandpedagogicalessaysinthisjournalsupportandconfirmoureducationalphilosophies.More thaneverinthisyearofrisingnationalismandisolationisminmanypartsoftheworld,weareproudtoconfirmour commitmenttotheimportanceofinternationaleducationandthebuildingofunderstandingandcooperation betweencountries.ThepiecebyGordonCarlson,whichopensthisvolume,laysoutastrongargumentandpathfor thefutureofinternationalizationatOtemaeUniversity.ThisisfollowedbyapedagogicalexercisebyJohnJackson, whoexplainshowacasestudyinecologicalmanagementandtourismconnectslocalculturetotheglobal,andhelp
studentsunderstandtheglobalimpactlocalactivismcanhave.
JamesGraceyandBenHumphreysofferstudiesintoeffectiveclassroompractices.Gracey'spaperlaysout theimportanceoffailureandhowitunderpinasuccessfulandengagingclassroomlearningexperience.Inhispiece, Humphreysfocusesontheeffectiveimplementationoftechnologyinvocabularylessons.Bothpapersexplorenew teachingmethodologiesdesignedtomakeourcurriculumhereatOtemaeengagingandenjoyableaswellas
