The Change of the Mental Health Care System and the Studies on the Families of the Mentally Ill.

Koji MINAMIYAMA

In Japan, the mental health care system is being transformed from one centerd on institutionalized care to one centerd on treatment in community settings in recent years. This paper examines the role of family in the community care of the mentally ill, the relation between the mentally ill and the family.

This paper describes the history of taransition of the menally ill's social position and families' responsibilities for caregiving, reviews previous studies on the familes of the mentally Ill. And we indicate key points to think about the relation between the mentally ill and the family in the future.
