Objectives of the Session

This session is devoted to the discussion on the teaching strategy in order to enrich international education.

International education or education for international understanding aims at instilling a broader perspective and an understanding of different cultures, fostering attitudes of respect for such ideas, and the ability to live with people of different cultures, as well as to act independently in the world community. It deals with global issues such as environmental issues, cultural issues, development issues etc., and great emphasis will be placed on the education that encourages students to acquire the following abilities:

1) Ability to understand, accept and link up with different cultures as well as people of different cultures. 2) Ability to establish their own identity on the basis rooted in the tradition and culture of their country. 3) Ability to express their own opinion and translate it into action for themselves.

In order to foster such abilities in school education, students will be encouraged to develop abilities to learn, reason, judge, express themselves accurately, discover and solve problems, acquire basic creativity and act independently in response to social changes. For this purpose it is important that educational activities such as hand-on learning activities, problem-solving activities and/or inquiring activities are carried out rather than teacher-centered methods for cramming knowledge. Here emphasis will be placed on leaning that helps students to appreciate different cultures open-mindedly and develop capabilities and abilities to live in harmony with people of different cultures and customs. At the same time, students will be inspired to deepen their understanding of the history, culture and tradition of their country. Topics from the social problems which are familiar to students should be positively taken up and it will help them feel that the outcome of learning is real.

To promote international education, much value will be set on the improvement of fundamental and practical communicative competence in foreign languages. With the progress of globalization, English has played a central role as the common international language in linking people who have different mother tongues. However, education for international understanding is not only applicable to English classes but also to every subject, especially the subject of social studies, the subject of geography and history, moral education and special activities, and other interdisciplinary and comprehensive studies.

In the Japanese Courses of Study, which have been implemented since 2002, international understanding is one of the major learning activities included in the cross-curricula “Period for Integrated Study”. As a matter of fact, many elementary schools provide hands-on learning activities to expose children to foreign languages and help them get familiar with foreign life and culture in the “Period for Integrated Study”. It is

important that student’s knowledge and skills acquired in individual classes will be related with each other and deepened through the activities of international education which are played whatever in the “Period for Integrated Study” or in other classes.

In order to cultivate communication abilities in English, however, the ability to express appropriately and understand accurately the mother tongue, which is the basis of all intellectual activities, must be fostered. Since the acquisition of the foreign language is greatly related to students’ abilities in their mother tongue, it is necessary for students to enhance communication abilities in their mother tongue in order to cultivate communication abilities in English. Here the enhancement of verbal “communication ability” while respecting other people’s points of view and ways of thinking has to be stressed.

Taking into account the special features of international education described above, we will discuss in this session how to develop and improve the teaching strategy so as for students to deepen their understanding of global issues. We organize this session as follows:

The first part of the session consists of five lectures. Professor Park, Seowoen of Daegu National University of Education will give us a talk on “Storytelling for Growing Humanity in Children's Lives: Beyond National Boundaries”. As the second lecture, Professor Kyoko Nakayama of Kyoto Notre Dame Women’s University will discuss on how to create classes in international education from familiar topics are interested in and those closely related to the community/society. Professor Hea-Ja Kweon of the attached elementary school to Daegu National University of Education will present on “Brain-based Teaching, Learning Practice”. The fourth lecture will be delivered by Professor Joong-Sun Sohn of Daegu National University of Education on “EFL Situations and Basic Consideration for English Education”. Finally
