Using online tools for supervising student research

Supervising students’ research is a duty common to many university teachers. One of the most important examples of this is supervising seminar students’ senior thesis.
Feedback needs to be provided in a clear, timely, and efficient manner. With the coro navirus pandemic, the necessity of providing feedback remotely has also increased. Th is presentation examines how the presenter has used online tools, specifically Googl e’s G Suite, for supervising students’ senior thesis over the past four years.
The presentation begins by providing an overview of G Suite tools, which include clou d storage, word processing, spreadsheet, and questionnaire forms. Following this, the presenter explains his system for using these tools to supervise students’ research as well as the perceived benefits and challenges. Questionnaire and interview data fr om current and former students indicate that they perceive G Suite tools as a useful way of receiving feedback and support. The presentation concludes with a discussion o f ideas for future improvements to using online tools to support students’ research.

要旨
学生の研究指導は多くの教員に共通する職務である。特に重要なのは、ゼミ生の卒業研究の指導 であろう。教員は適切なタイミングで明確かつ効率的に学生にフィードバックを与える必要があ る。新型コロナウイルス感染拡大の中、オンラインでフィードバックを与える必要性もまた高まっ ている。本発表では、発表者がオンラインツール、とりわけグーグル社の G Suite を学生の卒業研 究の指導のために過去4年間どう用いてきたのか、その効果を調査・報告する。
まず、 G Suite のツールについての概要説明を行う。具体的には、クラウドストレージ、ワード プロセッシング、スプレッドシート、アンケートフォームの４つである。次に、発表者が認識した ツールの利点と課題について、また学生の研究を指導するためにツールを用いるシステムについて 説明する。現役学生と卒業生からのアンケート及びインタビューのデータは、学生らが G Suite の ツールをフィードバックとサポートを受けるのに役立つ手段だと感じていることを示唆している。
最後に、学生の研究をサポートするオンラインツールの利用を改善していくため可能性を議論す る。
