Robert Graves and the Post-Catastrophic Comedy of But It Still Goes On

Michel W. PHARAND

This essay highlights some interesting biographical parallels in Robert Graves’ But It Still Goes On (1930), a play whose action mirrors the current domestic and psychological upheavals of its author, and whose characters are often thinly-disguised incarnations of real people. Although the controversial nature of its themes (homosexuality and Lesbianism in particular) made it an impossi- ble play to stage, it remains nonetheless an important dramatic recasting of certain turbulent events in Graves’ life, as well as a scathing critique of English social mores.

要旨

 この論文ではロバート・グレイブズの But It Still Goes On(1930) にみられる彼の伝記 との興味深い類似性に焦点を当てている。劇中の動きは著者自身の時代背景と時代の気分 高揚を映しているが、登場人物は実在の人間がわかるような形で具現化している場合がみ られる。テーマ（その中でもホモセクシュアルとレズビアン）が物議をかもすものである ため上演が不可能となったが、それにもかかわらず、英国の社会規範を辛辣に批判し、グ レイブズの生涯における破天荒な出来事を意味深いものとして劇作として創り上げたもの といえよう。
