The Volitional Form of the verb

Grammar

• The derivations of the volitional forms

• The volitional form express the speaker’s volition or intention: ‘Let me’ or ‘let us’.

• - ましょう is the volitional form of ます. たべましょう and たべよう are both a volitional

expres-sion. They both mean ‘let’s us eat’.

4.1

Grammar

• verb affirmative plain form + つもり-です (I intend to-)

• verb affirmative plain form + つもり-は/じゃ-ないです/ありません (I have no intention of-) • verb negative plain form + つもりです (I intend not to-)

Examples

•  くるま車 を買うつもりです (I intend to buy a car.)

•  くるま車 を買うつもりはありませんないです/ありません (I have no intention of buying a car.)

•  くるま車 は買わないつもりです (I intend not to buy a car.)

- The word つもり is a dependent noun and thus follows the plain present forms of verbs. It can also follow the demonstrative word その, as in そのつもり, which means to intend to do so. 母もそのつもり です。(My mother also has that intention./ My mother intends to do so, too.)

Expressing direction, using the particle

8.1

Grammar

• The particle へ indicates only a direction (often with verbs, いく, くる, かえる), while the particle

に indicates a direction, goal and etc. – 日本-へ/に いく。(direction, go to) – 日本-に/*へ つく。(goal, arrive at)

e.g. 田中さんはハワイに行きたいと言いました。(Tanaka said that he wanted to go to Hawaii.) 田中さんはハワイに行きたいと言っていました。(Tanaka was saying that he wanted to go to Hawaii.)

* The form 言います is used to quote words that are supposedly common knowledge, or to indicate a future action. The tenses of the quoted clause and the main clause do not have to agree.

日本の六月は雨が多いと言います。(It is said (They say) that it rains a lot in June in Japan.) 明 日、両親に、けっこんすると言います。(Tomorrow, I’ll tell my parents that I’m getting married.)

• Note on the use of ∼と聞く

* plain form +と聞きました also has a meaning “I heard that ” e.g. 田中さんは病気だと聞きました。(I heard that Tanaka was ill.) c.f. 田中さんは病気かと聞きました。(I asked if Tanaka was ill.)   田中さんは病気だそうです。(I heard that Tanaka was ill.)

ロシア語はむずかしいと聞きましたが、ほんとうですか。(I heard that Russian is difficult but is it true?)

• The particle に expressing time is optional; ∼時 can appear in the forms 時に、∼時は、∼時には • It is NOT necessary to use the past tense when combining 時 with nouns, adjectives, or verbal

expressions that express a state of being such as ある、いる、∼ている、∼ない

• When the 時 clause is in present tense, it indicates that the action in the 時 clause is not completed

when the action in the main clause takes place: – 出かける時、でんわしてください。

Please call me when (before) you leave home.

– そのレストランに行く時、予約をしたほうがいいですか。 Should I make a reservation when (before) I go to that restaurant?

– そのさかなを食べた時、おなかがいたくなりました。 I got a stomachache when I ate that fish.

– ホテルについた時、でんわします。

I will call you when I arrive (have arrived) at the hotel.

• The Tense in the main clause indicates when the entire event took place:

– 日本に行く時、母にでんわします。I will call my mother before I go to Japan. – 日本に行く時、母にでんわしました。I called my mother when I went to Japan. – 日本に行った時、母にでんわします。I will call my mother when I get to Japan. – 日本に行った時、母にでんわしました。I called my mother when I got to Japan.

• Use が to Mark the subject of the 時 clause, if it is different from that of the main clause:

– 山田さんが来た時、すずきさんも来ました。 When Yamada got here, Suzuki got here too.

• When the subject of the clause containing 前 is different from that of the main clause, it must be

marked with the particle が.
