Ikebukuro, the holy land for anime

Ikebukuro Autumn Culture Festival Tokiwaso, the apartment of miracles

From the 1950s to the early 1960s, the masters who pioneered a new era in the world of manga, including Tezuka Osamu, Terada Hiroo, Fujiko Fujio (Fujiko. F. Fujio, Fujiko

FujioⒶ), Ishinomori Shotaro, and Akatsuka Fujio, spent their youths in a two-story

wooden apartment building known as “Tokiwaso” located in Shiina-machi (present-day Minami-Nagasaki, Toshima City). Tokiwaso, which became a foundation stone for Japan’s manga culture, was demolished in 1982, but the origins of manga culture that began in Tokiwaso continue to ﬂ ow on in the anime culture that we have today.

奇跡のアパート「トキワ荘」

1950年代から60年代初めにかけて、椎名町（現豊島区南長崎）に、

手塚治虫をはじめ、寺田ヒロオ、藤子不二雄(藤子・F・不二雄、藤

森章太郎、赤塚不二夫など、マンガの新たな時代

を切り拓いた巨匠たちが青春時代を過ごした木造2階建てアパート

「トキワ荘」がありました。日本のマンガ文化の礎となったトキワ荘

は1982年に解体されましたが、トキワ荘から始まったマンガ文化の

源流は、現在のアニメ文化につながっています。

Otome Road

A row of anime shops line the street opposite Sunshine City. As it is constantly crowded with young women, the area was given the nickname of Otome Road (meaning “Maiden Road”). The area is the source of information for anime, and has attracted a succession of anime and game-related contents to Ikebukuro.

Today, the manga and anime culture have attracted attention from people around the world as a representative and symbol of “Cool Japan.” In March 2017, which marks the centennial of Japanese anime, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival, an international anime i lm festival, was held for the i rst time in Ikebukuro. Together with the Ikebukuro Autumn Culture Festival, a hallmark event for anime and subculture held every year in the fall, the aim is to develop Ikebukuro as a “holy land” for anime that attracts anime fans from around the world throughout the year.

マンガ・アニメ文化は、今やクールジャパンの代表格として世界から注

目を集めています。日本のアニメ100周年にあたる2017年3月、国際

的なアニメ映画祭｢東京アニメアワードフェスティバル｣が池袋で初開

催されました。毎年秋に開催されるアニメ・サブカルチャーの定番イベ

ント｢池袋オータムカルチャーフェスティバル｣と併せ、1年を通じて世

界中のアニメファンが集結する「アニメの聖地」をめざします。

南長崎マンガランド事業

南長崎花咲公園内にマンガの原点「ト

キワ荘」を復元し、2020年春にマンガ・

アニメミュージアムとしてオープンし

ます。外観及びマンガ家たちが暮らし

た2階部分については、可能な限りの

完全復元をめざすとともに、ミュージ

アムとしての機能については、復元施

設内にとどまらず、地域の中に様々な

形で点在させることにより、

「南長崎マ

ンガランド」として、回遊性のあるまち

づくりを進めていきます。

Minami-Nagasaki Manga Land Project

Tokiwaso, the home of manga located in Minami-Nagasaki Hanasaki Park, will be restored and opened as a Manga and Anime Museum in the spring of 2020. The aim is to restore, as fully as possible, the exterior and the second ﬂ oor where the manga artists resided. At the same time, the museum’s functions will not be restricted to the premises of the restored facility, but rather, scattered across the local community in various forms. In this way, the area will undergo redevelopment as the Minami-Nagasaki Manga Land, which will allow visitors to roam around the area.
