Call for papers
We would like to invite several presenters for this workshop based on the following theme.
Theme of the Workshop
Economic Recession and Retail Internationalization :
The sub-prime mortgage crisis that triggered the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in the United States in September 2008 was the beginning of a worldwide economic downturn.
We are facing a possible Depression which could reach a level seen only once in a century. Although the governments of all the major advanced countries have implemented financial measures to address the crisis, there are, at present, few signs of a significant recovery.
Internal retail markets in advanced countries have already reached saturation, which has resulted in a slowdown of growth in many business sectors. In recent years, Asia and the Eastern European countries have been recognised as areas of potential growth. However, the current economic climate has had a great
negative impact on consumers, and even pioneering companies have been forced to slow down their planned growth rates.
How much has the current economic crisis influenced retail markets, and what has the impact been on growth?
At the seventh SARD Workshop, we would like to consider the current situation from several points of view:
1. What has occurred in the internal retail markets since the start of the crisis?
2. What measures have governments implemented to deal with the crisis,
and have these had any significant effects?
3. What have been the differences in measures taken by the various
countries?
4. How have the internal retail sectors been dealing with the crisis? 5. How the financial crisis has influenced prospects of the
internationalization of retail companies.
6. Whether there are any changes concerning competition between
international and national retail companies in Asia and Eastern Europe.
7. How much has the internationalization of retail markets been
influenced by the slowdown of growth in the markets?
8. What can be learned from companies that are not only maintaining
stability, but even remaining profitable in the current economic climate?
9. What difference in strategy is required now compared with the Asian
economic crisis of the 1990s.
In addition to the above points, it is envisaged that the economic crisis will be discussed in relation to retail markets rather than economic policies or the macro economy.
