FOREWORD

Special Section on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Networking

According to the explosion of data, the advancement of analysis and the broadening of networks, the importance of fundamental environment based on parallel and distributed computing and networking is rapidly increasing. We’ll soon be able to gather huge data from environment through networks, filter and make analysis on various combinations of data, forecast the future, and even recommend or control our decisions.

The objective of this special section is to publish and overview recent progress in the interdisciplinary area of parallel and distributed computing and networking. This special section includes papers based on the presentation at the International Symposium on Computing and Networking (CANDAR’13) held in Matsuyama during Dec. 4 to 6, and the International Symposium on Embedded Multicore/Many-core System-on-Chip (MCSoC’13) held in NII during Sept. 26 to 28, in addition to bland-new contributions from other IEICE members. All submitted papers were subjected to the same review process as those papers accepted for publication in the regular issues.

A total of 27 papers and 2 letters were submitted from 4 different countries and areas across the world;

e.g., Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan. We are pleased to report that the first authors from foreign countries were more than those from Japan. Each manuscript was carefully reviewed, and 12 papers were accepted for publication. We had to reject some of the interesting papers, since it is the editorial policy of IEICE transactions to reject a manuscript that requires a major revision. I hope I could see the revised versions of these manuscripts in the future issues of IEICE transactions. It is my honor to serve as the guest editor-in- chief of this special section. I would like to thank all contributors who submitted their high-quality papers.

Also, I wish to express my gratitude to the efforts and contributions of the reviewers and the guest associate editors. Finally, I am most grateful to guest editors, Dr. Matsutani, Dr. Matsumae and Dr. Nakashima, for their devotion to this special section.
